The dive is primarily used to extend your range when attempting to get to a ball. Meaning when you do not have enough time to run under/through the ball. The dive allows you to contact the ball just before it hits the ground. I will also use the dive as a safe way out of a situation. For example, if I am stumbling or falling forward, I will often dive. I have found that it actually puts less stress on my body, especially my knees.

This is really helpful and I understood this finally! In the past I have injured myself really bad like I have bruises all over my body, but I can start doing this. And my coaches have not taught this for some reason. Love your content!❤

So my girl, does so many dives, her hips use to be so bruised. And of course they wouldn’t heal before having the next tourney and get bruised again. I got her a hip guard. Which has worked wonders. But of course as soon as I got her the guard (which helps) she began perfecting her dolphin dive. And in practice right before this last big tournament in Gatlinburg, she did a PERFECT one. And it was so funny, because she always compares to you, for like everything. And I said “wow! You did an almost perfect Delaney Dolphin!” I wish I had recorded it because then she coulda seen it. But it was so good!

I feel her pain, I used to leave tournaments with literal oozing sores on my hips. Tell her congrats and let her know now that she has the basics down, her dives will only get better from here.

I‘m a setter, so I never really trained diving so much, but this really helped! (Always found it kinda embarrassing, my teammates were so much better at diving than me)

Question before paragraph😂: in some of your videos I have seen you do 2 moves I don’t understand: -the pancake -the like Angled *bagher* so like when you have your platform and move your hands backwards. It’s hard to explain 😅 This messege is going to be pretty long 😅m First, I really wanted to thank you Delaney for making this video since I have commented a message about, asking her to dolphin, dive, or dive in general, and become a better Lobero. I have already subscribed to for more than a couple months and seen your videos really helped me feel braver while literally throwing myself and sometimes I look at her throat myself and in this video I really found it helpful. I’ve tried it out and I’ve actually been able to do it and my coach was pretty happy with my dolphin tie and I just wanted to say thank you because you’re one of the KZbinrs that has actually not only seen my comment but actually posted a video about how to do it( now i’m sure there are other people who commented aswell) I just wanted to thank you for showing us this video! ❤❤❤❤

I’m a 17 ones national team libero and this is a great tutorial for beginners. ❤❤ Edit:also watching this back do you work out your quads are kinda jacked. Like you can do what see the muscle. I work out a ton so I’m pretty developed but props to you if you work out consistently. ❤

Thank you!!! I haven’t been able to find such an in depth tutorial so I was so excited when you announced this!! I feel like I have all libero aspects down except for diving and I’ve been trying to self teach during this off season and now I can learn correctly!! I think I’m partially scared to hurt myself, like landing in my stomach because I’ve winded myself a couple times.. how do I avoid that?

Make sure when you’re dolphin diving to have arm sleeves. Do not use other stuff like long sleeve quarter zips or workout long sleeves as they can burn from your friction against the floor

thank you so much for this!! i’m a setter but my teammates who are in front row never understand that a short free ball isn’t mine so i always have to dive and i always end up landing on my right side of my hip😭(the saddest thing is that they never get the saves i make💀)

I’ve been trying and practicing, and at first I was just diving and not really throwing my legs up just to get the feel for it, but once I tried doing a whole thing I kinda just landed on my stomach and almost every time I hit my hips on the ground. Any tips? (I’m pretty new to vb I only started playing last year and I’m trying out in about a week for jv)

how do you not get hurt when diving like when your body contacts the ground after hitting the ball? My right knee hurts so bad bc when I dive my knee hits the ground when I fall back but how do you prevent this from happening? This and the hip too 🥴 Like when I throw both legs in the air they hit the ground nonetheless and it HURTSSSS

Practice the motion like 1:13 in the video. I understand the challenge here because this is part of the action where your mind says "throwing your feet into the air over a hard floor is not smart" But this is one of the critical parts of successfully diving.

Yes, I have had to do it as a follow-through going off the sport-court tiles at a qualifier. However, I do not recommend doing it until you have gotten really good at the dive.

I know a lot of players do not typically learn this until much later but I feel the sooner the better so they can continue to develop the skill as they advance. I actually was teaching this to one of our 11s teams last week.

it does not. I am keeping more of the impact/pressure on my forearms then stomach. By keeping my head up, that keeps my chest from impacting the floor. Yes, there is some contact but not really any impact there.

How do you do a pancake

The key to a good pancake is to have your hand flat on the court as the ball hits the top of your hand. There cannot be any space between your hand and the surface. Having your hand cupped can also cause the ball not to bounce well so make sure the palm of your hand is flat on the court. The challenging part is timing getting your hand under the ball just before impact. That just takes practice, practice, practice.

Every time i dive i bruise my hip sooo bad and im not high up im low to the ground and idk why im bruising it, its always my left hip does anyone have tips??

i don’t throw my legs up because i don’t have momentum a lot of the time so that might be why but i feel like if i do throw my legs up it’ll make my hip bone go down harder

You have to focus on getting the forward momentum. Sounds like you are allowing your body to twist if you are getting hip bruises.
