This video is about how to draw a portrait using pastel pencils. I go through a step by step process explaining how to create a realistic and three dimensional image. It is for both beginners and advanced students.

Even though it is pastel, it has the feeling of an oil painting. Absolutely sublime ❤❤❤

I used to paint in oils but became allergic to turpentine and had to work in pastel . But there both a lot of fun. Thanks for the kind comment.

Oild paint was originally made with pastel pigment. Pastel is the best form for painting . I use it and create the most realistic paintings with Pastel.

Hi, This was a really great tutorial. I don't know how you explain such complex theory so easily -you've a real gift for teaching. It's a stunning picture. And I've learned a lot. Because your approach is so detailed, and you make your choices really carefully, I'm just about brave enough to ask, were you happy with her left eye? -I have a mercilessly perfectionistic brain. It's an artistic nightmare. And It might just be a case of personal preference. But do you think one could get away with a tiny bit more light in the left eye - even though it's the far side of the face? Or does her eyebrow look a little high? Or is the dark line at the furthest edge of the eye just a smidge too dark? Or have you any other thoughts. I really hope you're not insulted by my questions. I've imagined that a person who enjoys detail as much as you do wouldn't mind. If you do mind, I'll take my comment down.
@josephhammond36374 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment I really appreciate it . I don’t mind the questions at all . On the left eye I chose to keep the high light lower so that the left side would recede I didn’t want to give that side of the face to much importance. On the eye brow it may be a little high if you take in the perspective of the face. Again thanks for watching

Joseph, I love this great work! How do you save your work you mentioned that it cant get wet, do you put it under glass? Do you use other types of paper that you can "fix" your pastels with and how long did this take? Thank you for posting new subscriber.
@josephhammond36373 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind comment. I don’t fix the painting because it darkens the values. You can fix your painting if you use the paper called Clairefontain pastel mat a smooth board. If you’re going to hang the painting it must be behind glass . It took about 30 hours. Again thanks for watching

Beautiful! Could you please explain more about how to get the translucency of the skin? You've done such a wonderful job! Thank you!
@josephhammond363719 күн бұрын
Hi thanks for watching , I’ll be glad to explain . First you lay down the darkest value then the mid tone values then the light and highlight. Then you cover the whole shape with white pastel. Next you blend the whole shape with a stomp or paint brush or finger , this will make it so the values you laid down will show thru giving you a translucent appearance. I hope this helped thanks again

Great art, thanks. It sounds like you're using a set of Conte pencils, containing white, Pierr Noir, And different Sanguines, which are waxy. Conte pastel pencils are not waxy, rather they are more chalky than other brands.

How is the finished piece protected on the Sennelier paper since it is so fragile?
@josephhammond3637Ай бұрын
I don’t like to fix any of my pieces because, darkens the values so much no matter what surface I’m using . The best solution I’ve found is to put it under glass . You want to try the fixative on a scrap piece of the Sennelier board and see what happens. I’ve only had a bad experience with this board once and it was a tan color .i made the mistake of using the same board on a piece I’m working on now.

Hi Caroline ,I use both this sanded board is difficult to draw and erase on . I’ve had problems of losing grit can’t be replaced so I draw on a separate piece of paper then I transfer it using carbon paper. From there I produce the finish piece . I’ll put in how I do this in the next video.
