I used a regular number 2 pencil to sketch this and it was very hard to do the shading with it. It didn't seem to move at all so I switched to a charcoal pencil when it came time to shade. It worked so much better..

Probably stay away from references and just draw out of your head, then don't be afraid to tweak certain features! Bigger mouth, small nose, etc. Definitely don't think too hard, just let your pencil do it's thing! I have a drawing/media challenge coming in February that you'll love if you love whimsical faces!
