You should've shown bear legs too, because they are actually quite different from most other animals, since bears walk on their whole foot as opposed to other animals that walk on their toes.

This is a pretty decent tutorial, its good for beginners but there are a couple of things I would edit, the dog back leg is too exaggerated in the bend, they do have more bent legs than people but a lot of that is straightened out by having slightly shorter "thigh" and "shin" bones than a comparable human would have and the muscles on a dog make it more of a smooth curve down the back of the thigh and shin to the "ankle". Front dog leg was excellent. The horse leg again is too exaggerated in the bend, but in the hoof it's missing the pastern (longer bone between the "ankle" or fetlock joint) and the fetlock/ankle is usually a bit more obvious. I have been dying to do an animal anatomy tutorial I just wish I could get my screen capture software to work!

in general a pretty good tutorial, but - usually hind legs are not that bent? More straightened out. What can really throw you off is the proportions/lengths of each part - that's what's usually making stuff like legs or arms, especially of specific animals, look "wrong" - like a femur that's too log or short, or the middle part - if that is too long or short, it will really easily mess up the whole thing, so it's good to pay close attention to those differences in length and width. But other than that, this IS a pretty good way to approach drawing legs/limbs of animals if you're not really sure on how to breach that subject yet

Hey Jazza, sorry to bug you but I just wanted to say thank you. You are truly inspiring and you are a huge part of the reason I am so keen on persuing art, you made me realize that this truly is what I want to do with my life. I am going to major in graphic design in college and you lead me to that decision. I just wanted to let you know what a huge difference you made in my life with your videos. I recently purchased your Anatomy and Reference pack and I have got to recommend it to anyone who is an aspiring artist. It is great for learning the basics and is friendly to anyone, ranging from beginners to pros. Good luck with the baby and I hope you get your videos on a less bumpy schedule (although I can't see that happening with a kid to deal with!) because I really do miss them. Keep up with the amazing work, cheers.

Thanks for this video! Dew claw is the right/technical term; in dogs they can have them on their front & hind legs, but on their hind legs the dew claws are often removed during a routine spey/castrate surgery as they can often cause issues later on

Good job! It is so funny that you said to study humans first caused I have been obsessed with animals my whole life so I did it the opposite way. Nice tutorial Jazza. I thought the way you showed the bone and muscle structure was very clever. It reminded me of all the fancy words I learned in Biology :). I think that your tutorial could have been improved if you had shown reference photos, as I was told that when learning to draw something it is always best to draw from reference and life. Keep up the great work :)!

I didn't think a drawing tutorial would ever actually help me since most artists use complex drawing techniques, like I don't care about muscle definition to make every character I have less potato-y and like have legit weightlifter looking cats and dogs and mythological characters. This video has legitimately improved on how I draw canine legs a lot. I still need work on proportions unless all my animals forever will have either giant skulls and super small paws, or too skinny of limbs ect. I've only recently developed a style in drawing toes for dogs and cats and hooves without it just being a blob with lines and claws jutting out so I suppose proportional accuracy is important and then I'll be able to figure out different types of phenotype features like ears and fur and tails. (I like, but you skipped a lot with drawing lines and that's scary and difficult to follow when steps are passed over)
@AnnaGlin9 жыл бұрын
you didn't get the horse leg. The hoof doesn't "hide" anything. A horse essentially stands on it's fingernails, and they have ankles (or "wrists") above the hooves that have a slight bend as well, you'll see that looking at an actual horse. The "fingers" are hidden inbetween those.
@katelynmeeks11238 жыл бұрын
Some things to keep in mind when drawing a horse's back leg: I believe that the femur is one of if not THE longest bone in the human body, but it is significantly shorter in a horse's body. Their equivalent to our knee is called a stifle which is much higher up than how it is drawn in this video. Where you have drawn what looks like a sort of calf muscle is much longer, and that muscle actually looks pretty out of place. There actually isn't much muscle there to begin with as it is mostly (from what I have learned from owning my own horses) tendons. That part of the leg is called the hock, and it has more of a subtle curve to it as you work your way to it from the rear-end. Horses also have what is called a fetlock which is more or less the equivalent to our ankle. I also noticed that you drew a cloven hoof(I'm pretty sure that's what it's called) with 2 "toes". This would be accurate if you were drawing a deer, cow, sheep, etc., but a horse has 1 "toe" on each leg which is more of a triangular shape than square. I know this video is pretty old, but I strongly suggest making a Google search of the anatomy of a horse's back leg (or even images of a horse as a whole) to gain a deeper understanding of it because i know it is quite tricky.

0:08 Ow god! I'm sorry jazza but you are not a furry/animal artist and I would not advise you to try (professionally of course if you want to improve then go ahead and keep working on it) cuz it won't works. You've got the proportion approximatively right but the balance is completely off. I can't really explain it in english I'm sorry, but I think that to become really good at those kinds of anatomy, you need to be really interested in their aesthetic. Your hindleg especially, it can work on a anthro character but even then, it's too much bent and the foot and femur should be parallel. You have to think about the weight repartition for it to accurate : if it's too much bent, then it requires the muscles to be tensed and thus demand a lot of energy for the character. Also, the middle articulations (shin, calves) should be shorter + the finger (whatever kind they are) should be big enough for the gravity point (behind the navel) to be if brought vertically to the ground between the two paws/hooves if it is a bipedal character of course but well your way of drawing those are very anthropomorph so it could really only work for furries with a bit of work and correction. for real quadruped it's completely different.

I unfortunately have to point out the hindlegs are wrong :s The bones are right enough, but the muscles and the overall shape is very cartoony (but the sentiment of them kinda matching human is correct). The forelegs looked to be correct. Google image search [or equivalent] for hindlegs should show how they're actually supposed to be like, the thigh muscle extends farther back in the leg towards the "ankle" making it look less like that S outside of the bones not to mention skin and fur on top that provides extra padding for the shape. With some breeds of dogs or when you pull the leg in some direction (forward especially), they might start resembling that S shape again tho. Sitting position also makes it Seem like they're that S thing again because of folding of the skin/fur.

To everyone who's hating on this video, yes the angles of some legs are slightly off, and horses don't have cloven hoofs as drawn. However this doesn't matter. He's an illustrator not a biologist, he's over exaggerating proportions to show the difference between each thing. Please can everyone be slightly more open minded.

PixiePie Even then, as an illustrator who's teaching people how to draw, I'd expect he has some skill in being able to draw animal legs. Some people may take that this is 'exactly' how to draw an animal leg if that's what he's going for. Right now, it looks like he's teaching something he doesn't know much about in the first place.

This is awesome but the horses leg is so Unproportional the leg has way to much bend in the gaskin/stifle area and the back of the leg (where the hock connects to the flank) is such a sharp curve. Also the leg is so thin it would not be able to support the horses weight. There is no pastern at all and the hoof is shaped very strangely, just looking at the leg there is no way the horse could even attempt to propell itself with its hind end. I am not an artist I just know what horses anatomy looks like because I have ridden horses for 10 years, I own one and if his leg looked like that I would take him to the vet immediately. The human leg looks super good in my opinion, not to sure on the dog one though.
