When I was a teenager, I worked on a painting of Elric of Melnibone for 17 hours straight. I intended it to be my breakout piece. It was one of my best pieces even down to this day (I'm 48). Then just as I was wrapping it up for the day and have lunch, I spilled my whole airbrush cup of black paint straight on his face on the center vertical line. I sat there for the next three hours just staring at it. (For those in the know, airbrush is not one of those things where you can just paint over a mistake.) Now I never spend more than 5 hours straight on a piece.

I like to draw while watching TV, using references from my phone. It’s off and on for an hour. I couldn’t imagine even 16 hours of drawing at one sitting. I doubt very few so that. P.S. You are my favorite graphite artist. I’m glad you are able to do this full time.

I agree, 16 is a long time for most people, I might try it one day just to see if I can do it :) Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated!

I do 2 x two hour stints per day, mostly working on four to eight canvases at each sitting then return to them the next day and so on. I like to sketch out for an hour, loose sketches before applying a fast wet in wet watercolour wash. The next stage is applying thin washes before I touch up using acrylics mainly to add light after applying a series of enhancing glazes. Each of my canvases get a minimum of ten glazes, I find glazing makes the overall composition 'pop'. For the record, I have only recently taken up pencil & wash as a technique, I sell prints of my artwork and my customers appear to like what I am producing in this style. I am not naturally gifted when it comes to 'drawing' although I am able to create an impression of the motif which is what I try to achieve at the end of the day.

I'm the type of artist that works for longer sessions. I days ago copied a part of el Greco's painting the burial of the count of orgaz. I did a portrait of the 2 monks, and 2 other surrounding faces. The drawing took me 2 days. Sometimes I get so into it that time flies and I even forget to drink water or to eat. On the second day, after doing over 4 hours of drawing, I ate, and shortly after, I went back and finished it until around 9 PM. I was really exhausted afterwards..I by the way, after toning the paper with white, gray chalked, used graphite to create a gray tone. I used a black pastel pencil to sketch. And I used conte white and sanguine for skin tones. I've been doing portraits with sanguine ( conte a paris) or by using the three crayon technique, inspired by Rubens ( using sanguine, white, black) and the drawings come out really lovely. Actually it simplifies things. Drawing with mainly graphite can be more complicated. Now a days I'm barely touching graphite and using mostly conte a paris chalks

I have sat and drawn or painted for 12 to 20 hrs at a time depending on how engrossed I am. I do force my self to take breaks so I can photograph my progress and help me refocus.. you can overwork a piece, lose perspective or otherwise ruin a piece if you don’t .

OMG SMOOTHIE! This is lovely & methinks a bit different for you. 😆 Enjoying your voice again. As far as time goes… when working in oils, can do an entire landscape in an 8 hour day with breaks each hour for pet tending, neurological resting, etc. When drawing, it’s mostly in front of the 📺 unless there is something REALLY interesting that grabs the attention. With watercolors & pastels - it’s a mixed bag of working a few hours & coming back to it as patience is required.

Thank you my friend! I do the same, regular breaks every now and again to stretch the legs and back, (you have to at my age) not only that, it helps to take a break and come back to a drawing or painting with fresh eyes, helps a lot with the drawing process.

From a health perspective, sitting down for too long risks serious issues and I imagine many artists sit rather than stand. It's generally recommended that one should break sitting down by 15 mins to 30 mins in an hour. It is easy to sit for long times and I have. I now have osteoarthritis and bending the neck for long periods can be very painful. Take regular breaks and move around.

ABSOLUTELY! Have neurological issues in neck, shoulders & elbows from hanging out in a desk posture too long for too many years. Have had 2 surgeries to release the nerves but have refused additional surgical intervention as they all come with their own issues. These days, no more than 1/2 hour with a 10 minute break… am retired so it’s doable. 😉

The max I sat for a drawing is 6 hours sharp, because of my uni entry exams in Greece. If I paint something for myself I sit for 2 hours at a time and I have to finish in 2-3 days or I get bored. I don't have the patience for more. I try not to be bothered with making a masterpiece at a time. It is an achievement for me if I manage to finish my painting

12 hours and 34 minutes. It was a horse portrait, a bust. Yes, I timed it because I'm always asked how long it takes me to do a drawing. I usually don't stop a drawing until I've finished, I can't help it. Of course I step away to get a coffee or use the little boys room but otherwise I just lose track of time. Fortunately most of the stuff I draw doesn't take that long (average is about 5 hours).

12 HOURS! that's a long time, even though I do 8 Hours, that's with a diner break, and breaks every 30 minutes to stretch out,

I love the detail you achieve. I mainly work with Polychromos coloured pencils and my drawings take from 10 to 18 hours to complete. Finishing them over several days to break it up. The detail you achieve is incredible. Definitely shows that more detail is achieve the longer the drawing takes. Where do you source your reference photos?

Hey smoothie77, I have a set of derwent drawing pencils. These have more of a soft velvet finish. They are more on the opaque side, and have unique colors like sanguine, chocolate, olive earth, brown ochre... Ideal too for drawing fur. Have you used them?

Invest in a standing desk, your spine will thank you. Don't sit with materials eg wallet in back pockets - higher risk of bursitis & you will not enjoy that. Following my slipped disc nearly a year ago I don't usually sit for more than 45 minutes without a little break & stretch out. Your heart & circulatory system need to be active too if you want a healthier life post-40. Have a look at Bob & Brad on KZbin for good posture and exercises, stay healthy.
