Good series, analyzing Jim Lee’s peak bat Marvel. Informative and straight to the point. I’d like to see you do a series on Marc Silvestri’s Wolverine era. Both artists existed at Marvel around the same time and had completely different ways of rendering. Would be very interesting.

@@LearnComicsWithPancake Awesome. I’ll be on the look out for it in the future. 😉

Less rendering on the hair also makes it feel like it’s in motion. Notice how the level of detail in an image weighs and slows it down. It becomes a freeze-frame. Manga uses speed lines to break up the outline of the form in-motion for this reason. Deleting information as Jim Lee does can give a similar effect, but without the direction or speed.
@LearnComicsWithPancake6 ай бұрын
That is a wonderful analysis, thankyou for sharing! 😁 I will be honest, I've never had a hard look at manga so maybe I should and spread my wings!

Jim always nailed that super wavy 80s hair, but having had long hair for a few years recently myself I can't help but imagine how much work Jean and Rogue put into maintaining their 'do. In my comic "Tough as Nails", the main character Nails, being a 7' anthro tiger, doesn't have human hair but I do render little fur tufts at her knees and elbows, as well as the ruffs on her cheeks. I imagine her fur isn't suuuuuuper thick/fluffy, so I try not to over-render it and make the pages look cluttered/messy. Her kobold friend Ravani obviously doesn't have hair but sometimes his horns/cheek spines form neat shapes depending on the angle.
@LearnComicsWithPancake6 ай бұрын
The answer: nuclear amounts of hair spray I reckon haha! I love the word ruffs for fluffy cheeks, I think that is my word of the week. I don't envy you having to draw quite so much fluff and fur at all! :O
@ShinGallon6 ай бұрын
I usually just put little render lines around her muscle contours, but my style is a little more manga/cartoon flavored than Jim's. What takes forever and a day is her stripes x.x

Hair is just a pain in the butt for me. It's not the volume or the clumps, but the detailing that gets me. I can put hair into ribbons all day long but once I add lines, it turns into those stringy scratchy individual lines they tell you not to do.
