Yazawa is an amazing person. Seems like she was able to hold onto that child-like love for drawing that most people give up or forget about later on in life. Awesome Video! ^^

Great video as always! In terms of drawing skills, it's what I refer to as the "one punch rule" whenever someone asks what the minimum technical "skill" level required is :) I find a lot talk about drawing skills, but not as much about writing skills or skills in terms of visual storytelling. So someone can make perfect anatomy but doesn't know the tricks to make a drawing "attractive" or understand how to frame a panel. By contrast, if you look at one punch man or early attack on Titan, the visual storytelling and flow is there, even if the drawings themselves and anatomy isn't great :) To use a quote from the movie "the man who wasn't there" - "she will never become a pianist, but one day she will make a great secretary" referring to the lack of emotion even if she was hitting the right keys :)

Great analogy! There is definitely more to creating manga than just our drawing skills.

Mentor Nao Yazawa is a very kind person.. i struggle many times in my art, because of that I stopped drawing for 7 years... And now I'm 25 I'm like a beginner again, but listening to Mentor Yazawa it inspires me to continue drawing, it's been a year since I started drawing again and everytime I felt discourage I listen to Mentor Yazawa's advice.. "keep drawing"

I am quite literally in the same boat right now. I started crying when I heard her say to "keep going" because I've recently gotten back into drawing and had to start over, which has been very discouraging. But having people like Yazawa sensei makes the process so much more achievable and gives me inspiration to keep going indeed.

Ah so I should return to tracing then? I'm pretty sure I'm the type that needs a mentor to pinpoint my mistakes if I understand correctly but maybe I'll understand and learn more things from the other videos. Thanx 😊

Hi Viv! There are many ways to copy. Tracing is one of them. Eyeballing (looking at someone else’s artwork and then trying to replicate that without tracing) is another. When you’re a beginner, these are great ways to start learning how to draw. You’ll be able to build muscle memory and learn from other artists. A lot of beginners feel weird about copying and think that the sign of a good artist is drawing everything from imagination. But even pros need a reference. Overall, just don’t feel bad about having to copy to improve your skills. It’s a natural thing as artists. :)

I feel like a total idiot now for not considering the concept of all major art forms starting with copying until you figure out what you want to do for yourself.
