These techniques are so cool! The fact that you're using four different examples shows that there isn't just one way how to do things. That really helps someone that gets art block, or even just any creative blockage. I found the pen and crosshatching very surprising, never seen that before. The pencil technique is easier to get a hang on, as that's the easiest to doodle, the water color looks so smoky haha. The pastels look absolutely amazing!!

I love how it looks like different type of smoke with the different media. The graphite and pastel ones make me thing of factories in Victorian London, while the watercolour one reminds me of the steam billowing out of the paper plant near where I live. Thanks for a great video!

Hmm with pen and ink I usually do like a scribble texture, but it more for foliage that smoke. I will give crosshatching a chance for smoke. I usually have a lot of fun with cross-hatching PS: Your 2 pencil method book is amazing, I've learned so much from you, thank you very much :)

@@abbyrivers9971 yeah i tried stippling as well, and although the result turned out amazing, it took me 8 hours to draw a character :p

@@AlcheonArt yeah thats the reason I don t use it when working wwitg ink. It s do time consuming and I don t have time for it .There s a pencil or pen that Frugal crafter Lindsay made a review of that makes it wat easier and raster IT s electric I think if If remember IT correctly and that would make me more able and wanting to draw stippeling. Sorry for faults with writing auto correct and Dyslexic
@AlcheonArt5 жыл бұрын
@@abbyrivers9971 That might be too expensive for such a low budget artist like me and yes, stippling is not reliable for inktober unless i do some very tiny and meaningful pieces. But i would want to try a HUGE paper with millions of dots and very highly detailed at some point. (The kind of project that you work in secret a few months, a few minutes a day) :P

Nicely done Mr. Crilley. I would say however, one more thing to add when drawing smoke, well to take into account I should say, is wind direction and speed. Not just at the top of the smoke stack but, also as the smoke rises to higher altitudes. There isn't always gale force winds but, a light breeze does wonders over long distances. Rising up counts as distance as well. ;) Just keep in mind what mood you're trying to set for the scene and keep your drawing true to that. :)

You can use a q-tip to blend that pastel out more. Blow the edges out and make it look more realistic. But in order of best to least; watercolor, pastel, pencil and then ink. The ink way is to time consuming for not the best overall results.

there are better ways of drawing smoke with ink by using various different strokes rather than just straight lines (or speckling if you're adventurous), and having areas of dark and light. i do like to mix archival ink with black water colour. makes for interesting effects.
