This is the best video on grinding a dogs nails, that I've found so far. Most other videos miss the things that you've covered here. Thank you so much.

I've spent a couple of weeks getting my dogs used to me handling their paws which they hated... then I slowly moved onto a grinder....again I've spent 2/3 weeks once a day getting them used to the sound and feel, it's a long time I know but worth it in the end....If they pull their paw away I finish and try again another day.. Today I did one nail 😁 on each dog and will do one every day, so as not to stress them or me lol ...The grinder I use is called LuckyTails it's so quiet, hardly vibrates and has a light which is good as they both have black nails .... I'm now getting more confident each day 😁

Great work! It’s definitely not easy and requires patience but you are a good caretaker to make sure husbandry is fun and relaxing for your dog. Well done!

@@leejennifercorlewayres9193 yep it's great, when I say "nail-le" to my dogs they get excited as they know what's coming, they both give me their paws at the same time and even cry for me to do them first...it's working fine with grinder and dogs...

Thanks! This video was great for showing the actual technique. My dog ruptured his ACL in February and had reconstruction 4 weeks ago. Since his injury, we’ve really neglected his nails because getting him to and from his grommet safely has been difficult. We started the conditioning process with dremmel about a week ago and he’s taken to it pretty well so far. I was just looking on some technique tips and this was helpful!

probably have a different pet dremel, but may switch the attachment heads over. that looks more controllable to use than sticking claws in a hole to grind on a disc. anyway, thanks. I too have a rottweiler and everything I needed to know was here... = )

nice way to trim
@annewatman6773 жыл бұрын
My dog’s nails are way too long, and it’s not that I’m neglectful, but I probably haven’t trimmed back far enough because I’m so worried about hitting the quick. He’s great with the dremel, and I definitely reward him with treats. I always look at the bottom of his nail because it looks like I can see where the growth is, but I’m still uncertain.
@K9ofMine3 жыл бұрын
Hey Anne - I understand, some of us on the K9 of Mine team have dogs with the same issue! The problem is that once the quick has grown, you have to Dremel the toe nails just a tiny amount on a regular basis for the quick to retreat and draw back. Try to work on more frequent, but very short and minimal nail grindings and you should be able to get your dog's quick back to a normal length eventually (I know it's easier said than done).
@anneharwood9433 жыл бұрын
@@K9ofMine Thanks so much for your response. That’s what I’ve been doing, but I worry that I’m still not going far enough. I trim him about every 10-12 days, and it feels like I’m getting nowhere! But, he’s really good about it because I’m careful and have never hurt him. I always look at the underside of his nail as I’m working to see how close I’m getting. I feel bad because his nails are extremely long, and I have never neglected them. I do think some dogs tend to grow long nails more easily, but I know it’s important to take care of this! What I wish is that someone could show the underside. Am I seeing where that quick comes in? There’s an area that looks different than the rest of the nail. I’ve also read that you keep going until you see a little black spot in the center of the nail, but I can’t quite get there!

@@anneharwood943 any luck on getting your dog's nails shorter? I've been taking my dog to get her nails clipped every 2 weeks for years and they're still long. I finally bought a dremel. Hopefully I can get them under control.
@annewatman677 Жыл бұрын
@@sherimetschan961 To be honest, not really. And I’ve tried hard!!! I had a schedule of about every 10 days, but it’s usually more like 12. I’ve gotten more aggressive, but still worry I’m going too far. I have to think that some dogs just have longer quicks. I actually have a pretty long nail bed compared to some of my friends, and I bet it’s the same with dogs. We had a standard poodle that was like this. None of our other dogs have been as bad.
@sherimetschan961 Жыл бұрын
@@annewatman677 thanks for letting me know. I'm working up the courage now. Even slightly shorter would be better. If I find something that works for me I will let you know. My dog is a pit/Dalmatian, with thick, black nails. She does have 1 white nail where I can see the quick so lucky me for that.

Be careful of holding the grinder too long in one spot, as it heats up and can hurt. Keep the grinder moving and lift up after a few seconds. This dog has short nails, so it may not seem obvious. But if you have a dog who has longer nails, don't go in there with a vengeance.
