My best tip for budgeting is buy what you're actually are going to wear (reality vs. fiction). It's that simple. Know what works on your body (colors, fabrics etc) like a uniform and don't buy things because you think you might wear them if you had a different imagined lifestyle. Many people invest in so many trends or "I need that dress" mentality and things just sit in your closet till you make another purchase. There are so many second hand shops even online as well like Thredup that have a rotation of clothes coming in some are even partially in mint condition at a fraction of the cost.

Tip for saving money: prepare new purchases so they last longer. For example, polish and condition leather shoes as soon as you bring them home - don't wait until they need to be polished after a few months of wear. Understand how to take care of clothes so new purchases don't equate big dry cleaning bills. Also, when you visit NYC, keep in mind - it is a surprising mix of EXTREMES. Extremely hot and humid in the summer, especially when you're surrounded by concrete and millions of other people, and extremely cold in the winter. It's beautiful in between - spring and fall in NYC are so gorgeous.

I have the Philips clothes shaver too. From personal experience after 2-3 years of wearing a jumper, nothing can make it look brand new. I do wear merino wool and regular de-pilling can make the garment very thin and threadbare. My best tip is to wear skivvies or tops under jumpers to avoid laundering jumpers too often.

When I was young Rit dye was a go-to for any item that had gotten irrecoverably stained! And strategic placement of cute appliques! I had a cute cardigan that I dyed bright green but you could still see the small stain so it then got tiny suede burgundy hearts stitched randomly. It made people smile :) Clothes are like food, sometimes poverty/thrift makes you far more creative!

Money-Saving Tip: Buy vintage! Do you think that I can afford my lovely Givenchy Antigona bag on a retiree's budget?😳😂 But I do very well on eBay, ThreadUp, Real Real, Tradesy, local thrift stores, local consignment stores, and Poshmark. Second money-saving tip: Learn what makes a garment 'quality.' Go to expensive boutiques, feel the fabrics, scrutinise the interior construction of the garment, closely examine the fiber tag; become intimately familiar with the buttons, zippers, and other features. That way, you will recognize quality when you see it. More importantly, you can re-create quality when it is lacking. If the jacket has cheap buttons, upgrade them. If the used skirt has a wonky zipper, replace it. Clip dangling threads, reinforce seams, add hem weights, layer in a few hand-finishing details, and most important of all: tailor it to fit! Even a mediocre poly blend will look 100% better with a good cut, finish, and tailoring.

I've been using Carbona Stain Devil to treat any cooking oil & tomato sauce stains on my clothing. I use Fels-Naptha bar to treat sweat & deodorant stains. Both are inexpensive & work like a charm. To save $, I try to buy my clothes used, but am careful it's not something that will cost a lot to tailor. For dry clean only items, I use Dryel. If it's very dirty, then I use a coupon & take it to the cleaners. Btw, I ❤ your content. Keep up the good work!

Great video! I have spent the last six months evaluating what I have, truly need now (I retired), what fits, what I love and will wear. I have taken many clothes, purses and shoes for either cash or store credit. One store in particular seems to get better quality clothes in so I shop there. I have started asking myself do I need it and will I REALLY wear it. I’ve also learned that if there are any issues it’s a no because I won’t wear it. I’ve gotten better about not taking tags off for a few days because I’ve learned that I have different thoughts at home than the store plus I can evaluate if it fits with what I already have. I have become a master at returning things and it has helped me stop purchasing things because I keep refining my style. Thank you for supporting sustainability!

There are some of the things I do to dress better without money. In no particular order: Haunt the thrift shops. Dress almost exclusively in natural fabrics: cotton, linen, silk, wool. Shoes and bags must be either fabric or real leather. Maintain, maintain, maintain! Treat leather garments and accessories with leather preservative and polish; store woolens on cedar hangers or in cedar chests; line or rack dry washables rather than putting them through the dryer; wash fragile things in net laundry bags, inside out, at the proper temperature, etc. Save quality buttons (e.g., mother of pearl, brass, glass, pewter, vintage Bakelite) and substitute them for cheap (and cheap-LOOKING} plastic buttons. KNOW my MOST becoming colors and buy them and wear them. Don't be trendy; acquire clothes that are going to outlast the most current styles and still look good. Have a hand steamer and steam out those wrinkles. Whenever possible, get shoes resoled and favorite garments altered for a proper fit. Learn to recognize high quality and Invest in designer wear ONLY when that name brand equates to quality.

Frederick I really like this video. I also shop at second hand stores in posh neighborhoods and get a lot of things usually with tags, never used for pennies on the dollar. They have tags different colors and change the price to 50% from week to week. Going there often has been so good to my wardrobe.

@@mrazik131 I let my things air outside....sometimes it takes doing that a couple of times. And have found numerous choices for non-toxic in ESSENTIAL OILS FABRIC SPRAYS. The brand I like best--both price and availability-wise--is POO POURRI Brand. Yes, the same company that makes the commode bowl spray......Their 'room and fabric' sprays are made with nothing but essential oils....and they're lighter than their bathroom counterparts, so you won't have an overwhelm on your stuff. Never buy a full-priced item is my tip. Or, if you see something in a more expensive store, there may be an almost identical item somewhere cheaper. Also, check all buttons when you buy a new piece, and immediately get to work re-sewing them on if the manufacturer has been a bit stingy with the thread. Nobody wants to wear a shirt or coat with missing buttons. Suede or nubuck shoes - spray a protector such as Scotchgard on them straight away. Frédérique I love my little clothing shaver; it makes such a difference and if you put the effort in regularly your sweaters look like new year after year. Another great video with super tips. Thank you!

Steal clothes? Steal money? Guess not. Finding money! What a good way to remind us all of where extra cash may be found. The information on somehow restyling garments, as with dyes, is something we do not think of much without reminders. NYC is hotter than Hades in the summertime. LOL. We get 4 seasons in the mid-Atlantic region (when we're lucky), so it's good to adapt basic garments for use from one season to another. Some move well to an adjacent season with layering and accessories that cover you differently. Some aspects of this were quite good. Thank you.

Favorite ways to save money on wardrobe? - Buying gently used second-hand clothing. -Replacing “cheap looking” buttons with more “expensive looking” ones. I recently did that with a simple black (designer!) wool blazer ($25 at charity shop), that had “ugly brownish” buttons. I replaced them with fancier silver toned buttons ($10) and now the blazer looks “fancy” and “expensive.” A bit of “easy” tailoring… can also make something look more expensive or last longer. (Pants that are too long can get damaged at the hem and that can look cheap and shorten the lifespan.) Having said that… if something doesn’t fit at all and requires expensive re-tailoring… I won’t buy it.

I save money by keeping and wearing my clothes for a long time and by taking great care of them. I never put clothes in the dryer, it wears them faster than anything else and breaks down any elastane, which unfortunately seems to be in everything these days, and elastic. I only use my dryer for items that I want to shrink before hemming. Also, we have been in an extreme drought here in California for more than 20 years during which I learned not to wash my clothes that much. Unless I get sweaty or get a spot, most clothes can be reworn several times. We all shower and use deodorant daily, so why not? I also prevent yellowing of my white clothes, which I love, so that I don’t have to replace them frequently. It shocks me how many people replace white tees, etc., constantly, I just prevent the dinginess, yellowing and stains and they look pristine for at least 10 years, even 20. I always pre-treat the underarms, collars, cuffs and spots, soak, then wash, in warm or hot water (depending if shrinkage might be an issue) with detergent and BIZ, and never wash whites with any other color, even ivory or off-white.

I do use the dry cleaners. My jeans always have a nice fresh front crease. I will try the dye tip for my black tee tops. Great idea. I no longer iron clothes so using my steamer and the dry cleaners keeps my wardrobe in good condition. I just cannot imagine washing and drying my good sweaters. I bought several pair of some nice lightweight joggers in tencel that I am washing in the washer...take out of dryer as soon as possible and they are clean and wrinkle free. Good blouses, sweaters and pants get dry cleaned when they are not clean enough for steaming. BTW.. I use my older not so nice clothes for my dog walks. I'm in a very hot climate so these shorts, cheap joggers and old jeans and tops all get washed in hot water in the machine. I usually come back dripping wet from May through October.

I treat my light to medium colored leather items, including jackets and skirts, with a protective spray (two light coats) before the first wearing. After a few cleanings, I put another coat on. It helps keep them clean much longer and in case of a spill, they give enough time to blot them up before they soak in. I keep smooth leather polished or conditioned and have shoe soles replaced before they wear down too much.

Scouting out the best second hand shops in town is the way I save money on clothing, but more importantly, am contributing to a more sustainable world and not contributing to crappy corporations, sweat shops and child labor.
