Drill bits have soft shanks as do easy outs . Most tools have case hardened shanks but taps are heat treated tool steel and drilling them once broken is not this easy . Most times you can mill one out with carbide but one of the most effective ways is to EDM it out !

Bought these but won’t even touch a Cobalt SpeedOut. What are my options? Update...sharpened the bit and I was able to drill out the broken SpeedOut and bolt. I don’t think I was using enough pressure at first. I am a very happy customer.

I can tell you this right now, there is no harder material than tungsten carbide, if that will not drill out your easy out then you are going to have to take it to a professional welding shop to have them remove it. Thanks for this video. Using a spring-loaded center punch would ensure accuracy by eliminating the wandering of the drill tip until it catches. Suggest using Tap Magic for lubrication and heat transfer. Would appreciate your advice on what drill speed to use with these cobalt-type bits from 1/8" up to 1/2" diameter when drilling regular steel, high speed steel or chrome steel, and the appropriate amount of downward pressure to use when using a hand drill for these projects. If I understood correctly, one should not use an impact or hammer-type drill with these bits, because of their brittleness. Thanks again for an another informative and practical video. As an habitual breaker of drill bits, I need all the good advice I can get.

The clamping surface is not hardened anywhere as hard as the actual cutting surface of the cutting end. No steel or carbide bit can cut hardened steel. Hi-speed or Cobalt or any other steel. It will require carbide or diamond. However, these are very expensive and not meant to be used in a hand drill. they require a rigid setup. However, ther is another option. A carbide tipped masonry bit can be used in a pinch. However, have more than one as they tend to chip out quickly. KnifeMaker

Hello Jonathan, just be very careful that you don't move the drill bit, right, left, front or back. Keep it perfectly straight up and down because they are very brittle and can snap, especially the small ones like you have. Just take your time and you should get it. I use the exact same thing but usually 5/32, 3/16,1/4" fits my knife scale pins. Try forgetting to drill O1 or damascus steel then harden it. Definitely buy pure carbide since you can sharpen it. & absolutely backcut the grind to reduce the drilling face surface. But, if you break one.. use a quality drift and punch them out (if have through hole) same for taps, drills, etc.. they are hard & shatter. Just need to be good with a hammer. 30 + years as a professional fabricator you learn these things. Now professional bladesmith.

@@SweetProjectCars Mike the hammer SPC What I'm talking about my friend is that I would like to talk on the telephone with either the U.S. distributor or the U.S. manufacturer of these miracle bits before I buy one. Your Amazon.com URL (amzn.to/2y1dpCH) does not lead a buyer to a U.S. telephone number or even a U.S. company name and street address. MARS-TOOL is the only brand-name-like or company-name-like word I can find at the amazon.com website, but MARS-TOOL does not yield any address finds, websites, phone number, or even registered business name through many google searches. Please, Mike, just give me the business telephone number or these bits U.S. distributor's street address and I'll be happy.
