Love your tutorial and agree with you 100% on "drink what you like, how you like it". I only drank bourbon and coke for many years. For the last decade, I "graduated" to sipping my bourbon on ice. Wild Turkey 101 is so smooth and mellow with a couple of ice cubes in a rocks glass.

The first time I had bourbon was 2 parts bourbon, 1 part gingerale. I didn't think I'd like it but I loved it! Over the years I've gone from Wild Turkey to Bullit (still my favorite) to Woodford Reserve which is also wonderful. Still my drink of choice on the rare occasions I have a drink. 💗

Tip for the water dilution: use a dropper bottle with distilled water. You’ll be amazed what 2-3 drops (not full droppers…just individual drops) can do. Tames the heat without destroying the overall profile. It really allows the flavors to pop through. 🤙🏻

Good presentation, Kurt. I'm glad you emphasized personal preferences above all while still providing clear guidance as to neck pours, glassware, and temperature. I agree that neat is the best way to try a new bottle; then add a little water to see the effect. I'm glad you mentioned opening the mouth while nosing. That enhances the profile while reducing the possible burn. And I'll say this outright, whiskey stones should be avoided. They're not effective, get in the way, and are a risk to glasses and teeth. Cheers!

I love the honesty on the amount of aromas you pick up. Everyone picks up on the classic bourbon notes, but im good for like 1 or 2 nuance notes. Sometimes I watch other channels and wonder how they got 27 aromoas out of one bourbon but 12 out of another, with the strict bourbon guidelines. Sometimes I think it's all for show, anyhow, keep the great content coming! Salud🥃🙏

The right way to drink bourbon: often! That you get 3 or so characteristics out of a whiskey, as opposed to 8 or so like some other video hosts, is why I watch your channel. Maybe those other guys are actually tasting all those profile notes, as opposed to imagining them, but it seems like a stretch to me. As far as on the rocks goes, I enjoy it but I see it as a form of cocktail, so I use humble bourbons like I'd use with mixers, e.g. Four Roses yellow label. Any higher quality bourbon and I"ll drink it strictly neat.

Always done well. I think like you said each bourbon is different and part of the fun is experimenting and finding what you personally like best. Sometimes I'm in the mood to sip neat and just enjoy the bourbon as is. Other times for whatever reason I want the flavor of an old fashioned. Mood plays a big part in what sounds good I think. Lately I have been mixing drinks and experimenting with other spirits. It is a lot of fun making mixed drinks but man I end up consuming too much sugar. Everything is a balancing act I guess.

Chad, Kurt would be the FIRST to tell you there's nothing wrong with a good Old Fashioned, or Sour, or Figgin' Delicious, or Hunter (He's made them ALL on this channel...totally sold me on it)...you just need to know, overall, what bourbon you like to drink first. Then you can start playing around with what you're willing to use for mixing...might be a different bottle than the one you're drinking neat, or with a smidge of water, or with a phat ass ice cube.
@slbdrinks
@slbdrinks 2 жыл бұрын
Great advice from @jamosensai! Old fashioned is an iconic whiskey cocktail so nothing wrong with that! If you are wanting to dip your toe into neat possibly start with a lower proofer, maybe 80-90. Let me know how it goes!

That's how I started too, and still start my drinking nights that way. I always drink it neat to taste test new bottles, but mostly drink with a block of ice. I always start my drinking with an Old Fashioned and work to on a rock. I find it helps the palet get acclimated to the proof starting with a cocktail.

I've said it before...George T Stagg over one cube is AMAZING!!!...although, I'll have to say that I used the cube, initially, to tame the higher proof whiskey for my near-virgin palate. Now, I'm a bit of a proof hound, and drinking any 100+ offering is a hell of a lot easier, and I can pull things from the notes I just couldn't when using the cube. Now the cube has one use only...and that's with a bourbon or rye cocktail. Thank you, good sir, for sending me down that path!!!

We get bagged ice that comes in chips rather than cubes. Over 100 gets 1 chip, 110 gets 2, 120+ gets 3. Tames the burn and much easier to sip

Done a tasting in Edinburgh a few weeks ago and picked up a great tip for the nose especially when using a glencairn glass. It should have 3 distinct experiences, with your snout at the top, middle and bottom of the glass. Really strange but you go from really light and fruity to dark and malty over the course before even having a sip. I used to keep a notebook as well, jotting down my experiences with a particular dram over time. It’s pretty cool actually seeing how you learn to pick out different flavours and scents over time. It’s where you definitely start learning the difference between a ‘good’ and ‘average’ drop.

This is helpful. Very helpful. I would add from my experience with the Texas whiskeys over 120 proof when you add water it needs time to all aclimate. So add your water and potentially let it sit for a time before nosing again. Also one needs to be careful with whiskey stones. My buddy chipped his tooth on them.

Thank you for the water tip, def makes sense! Not a big fan of those stones either to be honest.

Great series. nice way to get feedback on so many Bourbons. Sure, its your taste experience, but you have a lot of experience. I would guess we have similar tastes as you also like Ardbeg and Islay whisky in general. I had asked about a good liquor store in Indiana and ended up on my travel to Illinois going via Lincoln highway and Sauk Trail. So, I went to Triangle. The variety was stellar compared to the biggest stores in State controlled Michigan. Also, for those that I could find at both locations here is some detail. Lower prices are all Indiana. Old Forester 1920 61.99 vs 52.99; Bardstown #6 59.99 vs 55.99; Caol Ila 12 80.99 vs 72.99 and Talisker 10 79.99 vs 66.99. I also went to Friar Tuck in Illinois and it had similar prices and an even larger selection. amazed. Disappointing to live in a controlled state. Happy to have found your quality channel.

Awesome video, very intuitive, easy to follow. Im fairly new to bourbon tasting. Not new to bourbon, Lord knows I've drank my share of Jim Beam😂 but yea I'm new to the higher quality stuff. Im not a rich man so I can't swing those $300 bottles like some of us so I've been purchasing bottles here and there. Just picked up my first bottle of Eagle Rare, heard great things about it. Looking forward to giving it a taste tonight.

Great video for beginners. I too had nasal surgery, damn polyps. I have always felt jealous of all the notes, the subtle notes, that some seem to pick up. I actually do nasal rinses, about an hour before I get into sipping some good whiskey. At least I try too. Thanks for the video.

Great video . Instead of adding ice to rare breed , try blending it with Russell's 10 year . You get all the age and oak of the Russell's , with the taste and proof of the rare breed . It is fantastic .🥃👍

A drop or 2 of water changes the chemical compounds that are bonding together, releasing some extra flavors. It won't really change the abv much at all because 1 or 2 drops is such a tiny percentage of the liquid volume in the glass, but it sure makes the drink seem smoother

When I use water I follow a technique described by, Ralphy, in his Scottish whiskey reviews, where he adds water ever so slightly. His technique is to, before drinking, wait a little for the water to do it's thing. Works great on a Wild Turkey 101, real nice.

I love your "drink what you like, how you like it" words. I'm not a bourbon snob. My one and only for ever has been Wild Turkey 101 till this year after Thanksgiving. My W. T. was getting low so decided I'd see what else was out there after watching 8 or 10 comparison vids. I chose my W.T. 101, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Russell's Reserve 10 yr., Maker's Mark French Oaked 46, and later, Yellowstone Select, just because I saw it advertised on the "Yellowstone " tv series. I prefer the E. C. Sm Batch and the M. M. 46 neat, The 101 and Yellowstone over ice and the R. R. 10 yr. either way. Don't know what that says about my pallet and frankly don't care(I'm 76) but that's how I go about it. I, frankly, don't have the space to keep more than those on hand at once. Maybe when I need to restock I'll try one or two diff. ones. I'll shut up now.

spot on, one thing I always tell people is take your first sip like hot coffee... sip with air, and a tiny sip at that. then let it sit on tongue then press to the top of the mouth and hold it. it squishes down to the sides of the tongue and flavors start to pop.... for me anyway... great vid SLB!!!!!

I bought a bottle of Elijah Craig small batch bourbon ( I haven’t found the barrel proof stuff here in the UK yet) and the first glass was pretty grim. A real astringent, almost medicinal taste to it. I thought that I had wasted my money. HOWEVER, when I went back to it, with the bottle opened and a chance for it to breathe it was every bit as good as you have said. Really nice smooth drink. So you are so right, you have to let the bourbon breathe to develop the flavours. The rest of the bottle didn’t last too long! Thanks for your advice!

Not sure why some bourbons more than others need to breathe and open up. Some fresh opens are fantastic on the first pour. Glad you ended up loving it!

I drink single malt scotch neat in the right glasses per brand (We collect them while in Scotland) with just a few drops of water. However, I am from Mississippi, and in the summer, if I am sitting in my screen porch and it is very hot, I drink Bourbon or Rye over a big cube. The cube melts slowly, adds a little water, and the cool whiskey is refreshing.

Just wanted to mention that the reason you let bourbon "rest" in the glass instead of drinking it right after pouring is because it allows some of the pure alcohol to evaporate, reducing the burn slightly and making the aromas and flavors easier to notice. Personally, I sometimes like to pour a shot of whiskey into a glass with a stopper on top and put it into the refrigerator to cool down without diluting. Different notes come out of a chilled whiskey - Whistlepig is an absolute dill bomb out of the fridge. It's a nice change of pace. You can get the same effect by just putting the whole bottle in the fridge, but natural corks will contract and not fit into the neck as snugly for awhile afterward, so I stopped putting bottles in the fridge. I'm thinking about heating up my whiskey next - I'm interested in exploring all the possible flavors / modes of consumption!

Hello,Kurt new to your channel. Like yourself I enjoy flavors! I’m not a drinker, felt the effects growing up. However, I enjoy tasting! My absolute favorite was Stagg Jr. 136 proof, sadly no longer available for poor folks. Traveling to Cincinnati going to see Newley’s, Pogue, Boone county,, new riff, and second sights. By far I really like wilderness trail, but I adore lux row family. Hope to learn more, thanks for letting me ramble! Daryl

I drink it neat, or I don't drink it. Others are free to drink their's however they see fit. Visitors to my home are also free to drink however they like, BUT if they're mixing it they better grab a cheap bottle. I'm not going to let someone grab a fifty or seventy dollar bottle off of my shelf and then pour it in coke... that is what I keep Beam Black and TX Blended around for.

Get yourself a "Dasher" to add 2,3,4 drops of water when ready. Not expensive and it's how the pros add water. They are not expensive ($20 for 3 on Amazon) and you could personalize them and add them to your "merch" inventory. It definitely opens up the wonderfulness of the bourbon.Great channel, thanks.....
