Hmm, can't say I agree with the negativity at the grape stomping question. I have no doubt that it's overused and uninspired, but I imagine it's meant to be lighthearted, and it's kind of the perfect segway into teaching or learning about the wine making process. Or maybe I'm just the kind of douchebag they were refering to early on.

Tip number one: buy wine that sticks out to you because of the label. Its still a crap-shoot whether you'll like it, but if the picture is pretty, you'll like it more. Tip number 2: Hit up Aldi and Trader Joe's for table wine. Seriously! The $6-11 bottles have some serious winners for a weeknight dinner bottle in there. Even the $3 Aldi Chardonnay, Merlot, and Malbec are perfectly serviceable for a weeknight dinner at home or for cooking, because they're simple and clean and don't have weird off-flavors that become too potent when reduced over heat. I use the merlot and cabernet to deglaze when making tomato sauce or pan sauces when I roast red meat and game. The chardonnay does a great pan sauce with chicken and pork. The white Zinfandel is great as an economical base when making a citrus-forward wine punch, spritzer, or a blush sangria. It's candy-sweet, so it needs that acidity from other ingredients or dilution and bitterness from a selzer or club soda if you don't like sweet wines, but it'll work great for a summer party barbecue. The only Winking Owl I don't drink is the Pino Grigio. It's just yucky to me. Flat, weirdly bitter, dull, and medicinal. The Landshut Riesling is quite nice as well. Even has hints of petrol/gasoline, which is weirdly a good quality in Riesling. Not sponsored by Aldi. I just like how they get me buzzed for cheap.
@ethansmith90653 жыл бұрын
Tell me more about the Riesl fuel lol. I normally drop meat on the grill before the charcoal is done because i like what the naphtha does to the bark on said meat. The ideal of a fuely wine sounds tasty.

The best wine was a gift from my uncle whose only stipulation for drinking a bunch of fancy imported wine was that I did it with friends. So go grab a 40 dollar bottle of imported (red) wine and do something dumb with it, then sit down with your friends and pop the cork, because there will never be a bottle of Les Grand Bois finely rolled in the bottom of a canoe like it again.

The trick I learned is that a good winery will give you a "french rinse" if you go from tasting a red to a white; that is, they pour a little of the white into your glass to rinse out the red before actually getting your white wine taste. So, alternate red/white/red/white, and get extra wine at your tasting.

I actually haven’t been drinking much during the pandemic, but I have a strange urge to get into wine and more into gin. Second year of covid is gonna get spicy
@TheRepublicOfJohn3 жыл бұрын
Wonder how into gin you've gotten so far. Personally, I would say Hendricks, Aviation, or Bombay Sapphire for London-Dry gin-forward cocktails. Beaf-Eater, Bombay, and Tanqueray for something less nuanced, like a dirty Martini. As far as major grocery-store brands go, that list is a good start and then you can see what local distilleries have to offer. Door County Distillery in Wisconsin makes an incredibly-smooth gin that will absolutely knock you on your ass. Not hugely flavorful, but smooth as all hell. I suggest gin cocktails that include green Chartreuse such as The Last Word. 1/4 parts each of gin, lime juice, maraschino liquor, and green Chartreuse, chilled and stirred over bar ice, strained and served in a coupe or a lowball (or fuck it, a coffee mug - any glass wide enough that your nose gets over it so you can smell it too). Covers all the tastes (except umami) and is challenging enough to make you pace yourself.

Him: "If you go buy a steak at the store, is it better to know the farmer?" Me: "No?" I guess this is why the wine community always struck me as kind of up themselves; some of us just want to enjoy a nice steak with a glass of wine without needing to know the backstory. I would higly recommend Eastern European/Former Sovjet Allied Countries/Russian Federation wines, they are relativly unknown to people (Everyone knows France is a wine country, but how many would say ah yes Moldova?) but are great in flavor! It's a really diverse wine experience as well, because you have the Balkans with for example Romania and Croatia (Which is litterally a small sea away from Italy, so go figure.), countries like Ukraine where the soil is fertile and the summers endless, mountainous republics in the Russian Federation like Dagestan etc, etc... Not all may be prizewiners, but does that matter? They're great and unique, and especially when u get invited to have a drink of someones homemade wine you are in for an adventure. (And that will happen a lot, because the people are proud of their wines and very hospitable.)

I've started home-brewing wine and mead and I am likely tolerating the parts I don't like, that I wouldn't tolerate if it was store-bought, but I do enjoy them. I made a lot with bread yeast, but I think I will switch to wine yeast, because the taste of bread yeast in a drink, is "not desirable", while the taste of bread yeast in bread is good.

You can go buy a big bottle of whiskey & that will last you for a long wile if your a moderate drinker , you can do 4 to 6 shots & be good for that evening & really maintain your buzz , 3 shots for a medium buzz or be a sipper & have a long slow buzz over time .
