My husband has a 1969 Hugger Orange SS Camaro. I'm picking up my family's 1970 AMC Mark Donahue SST Javelin today...and it's been since 1995 since I drove a manual transmission. I'm brushing up...although I remember that no matter if you already know how to drive a manual or already drive a manual, every manual transmission is different and you have to get familiar with it. I don't advocate every "riding the clutch" but if you are learning the first time, feel the catch between releasing the clutch and the adding the gas before fulling releasing the clutch.

Honestly, create a turo account. Find a fiat 500 abarth in your area with stick. Press the clutch in to turn it on. Keep the clutch pressed down and shift into first. Slowly let your foot off the pedal until the car creeps on it's own. Give it a tiny amount of gas while releasing the clutch fully and away you go. Shifting into second is the same. Clutch all the way in, move the shifter to 2 clutch back out then gas like normal :D if you want it explained easier than even this video, search vehicle virgins how to drive manual. He explains the bite point a lot more clearly! He was how I got the basic concept. Then from there I spent a day (a few hours) practicing in my friends civic. Then almost a year later we bought my nephew a manual Abarth. I drove it home from the dealer and taught him that night. He had it within a week! I'm telling you, once you watch the vehicle virgins video, you'll never forget! And the abarth has the easiest, most forgiving clutch to learn with. It's so light and the moment the clutch is engaged is so clear, you'll get it instantly! :D hope that helps you learn. Don't be afraid! Try new things! :D

I've never driven an automatic. this thing is not so common here in Russia. For those who struggle to start a car on the stick I have a little advice how to do it without stalling - don't afraid to get too much throttle, rev your engine to 3 or 4 thousand rpm and then release the clutch. If the car is not extremely powerful it's stated smoothly. Once I was drunk and my friend never driven stick before I asked her to ride me home in my car but it was awful she stalled, stalled and stalled. She got mad, cried and hated me. Than the idea came to me - I told her what I've told you up here and things became better! She drove like an expert didn't stall at all. But people out there though that she is a street rider - she rev up the engine at every lights and took off quickly - they even tryed to race us!

ive always had beginners only pull out the clutch first with out any throttle. just so they can feel the grabing point a few times, then as they know where the clutch grabs, then apply some throttle. most cars have enough torque that it wont stall, if you release the clutch pedal slow enough.
@Quintinohthree7 жыл бұрын
hurleykid83 having driven cars with tiny engines for their weight and tall gears, I can confirm this. First lesson should be to get the car rolling without throttle. Second lesson should be to quickly accelerate from a standstill.

Sad state of North American drivers. I actually have a small reduction in my insurance because I have a standard transmission. The reason; my Jeep is less likely to get stolen because it has a manual transmission. So I guess it's a win for me, but seriously....! Second to that is lights vs traffic circles. After having driven in Europe and the UK,, 90% of the traffic lights in Canada are a waste of energy, infrastructure, and maintenance cost an need to be replaced by roundabouts (traffic circles). They are safer and, depending on which study, 20 to 25% more efficient. Save gas and time, what is wrong with that? Well many in Canada and the US don't understand them so they are afraid of them. Seriously, our driver training is so bad that kids are afraid of two things that most of the world takes for granted, traffic circles and manual transmissions.

I learned to drive back in the late 80s in a 76 Camaro with a stick shift. since then all of my cars with exception my wife current 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk have been a stick. I don't have a problem with automatics, I just prefer a stick. I don't think its a age thing as lot of the millennials I know can drive a stick. it just that most people in the us choose a an automatic for convenience. the new automatics are really nice, the 10 speed in the new ford truck is awesome the 9 speed in my wife's Cherokee is not bad either. however I still prefer a manual. My 2015 Wrangler Hard Rock is 6 speed and my 197 Camaro SS 396 is a 4 speed. I think its cool that Hagerty is teaching kids about classic cars and manual transmissions. the day I can get a manual is the day I quit buying new cars.
