The second part to this video where we look at how to drive on a motorway with variable speed limits in heavy traffic can be seen here • Smart motorways UK. Va...
Motorway driving isn't covered in driving lessons in the UK as learner drivers aren't allowed on the motorway until they have passed their driving test. I designed this video to help drivers who have never been on a motorway before and want to know what to expect. Not all motorways are this wide, busy or confusing so don't worry! I deliberately chose one of the largest stretches of motorway in the country so I could show you as much as possible.
The point I make about speed limits in red circles being mandatory is important and will be covered more in a separate video. It's not just red cirlcles, circular signs in general prohibit things so you can't go over whatever speed they show.
The car I'm driving (a Ford Fiesta) has a lane change signal feature where if you tap the signal stalk softly it will flash the signals on three times only, just in case you wonder why sometimes I push the stick softly and it might look as though the signals aren't on when they are.
The route I drove start from Barkers lane just outside south Birmingham and then I went from junction 3 of the M42 to Junction 10 of the M42 northbound and then back to junction 3 of the M42.

Why do lots of people worry about driving on the motorway? It's small town center roads and roundabouts that scare me x

+GoldenGrego I've always found motorways easy and I was surprised that the DSA (as the DVSA used to be called) once published an advert saying that motorways were "the ultimate challenge for any driver".

Very helpful thanks, gets me in the orientation of driving on left side, I've driven on UK highways and byways for about 15 years and got very comfortable, will be there again in May after a break of about 5 years so this is helping to watch this. In general my problem with driving in the UK is the speed and aggression of many drivers, not all though. White Van Man!

Pass plus should be mandatory. It gave me so much confidence.
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+merchant746 Pass Plus is rarely done at all these days because the financial benefits of taking it no longer exist. It used to be that up until around 2010 you would get at least £500 of your insurance for taking the Pass Plus course which cost only £120. it was madness not to take the course but after 10 years of running the PP scheme insurers looked at data which showed it wasn't making any difference at all and the discounts stopped.

Hi paul, I want to start driving on the motorway confidently. I did a couple of years ago and drove on the motorway but only to the 1st exit and back sign posted shirley as i live in birmingham. I really want to start off driving on the motorway with an approved driving instructor (adi) and when i came across your youtube channel i thought paul seems like the 1 who cud teach me as he is so calm n patient. Just thinking about going on the motorway, i have headaches, panic attacks and just feel very nervous n scared. If u do teach people how to drive on the motorway, please cud u let me know. Thanx

You won't solve panic attacks and headaches with driving lessons. You need therapy for that as this video of mine explains kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5XMk3WXa5uIgKs

best way is to find an instructor that does pass plus. it covers most parts of driving like motorways and night driving. its only a few lessons but it worth it.

If a learner driver is allowed drive on a dual carriageway that can be similar to a motorway then it is ridiculous not allowing on even safer roads, the motorways.

hi there, I just failed a driving test because I was entering a slip road at rush hour and I stopped at the end since I couldn't get over. How do you judge that safe gap right at the end of a slip road because they failed me for hesitation? thanks for the help keep up the good videos!
@1stdrive

+James Hagan That's something I can't explain in text but you get more used to it the more you do. The main tip is that it's not always about how close the car is behind you but how fast it's gaining on you. If it's not getting bigger in the mirror then it's probably safe to go. If it is getting bigger (closer) then let it pass but it's really hard to explain just writing it.

Apologies to bring this question up on a 5 year old video, but at 6:30 in your video, how come it is that the white arrows show that the lane stays to itself (i.e. you don't need to merge), however you had to merge anyway shortly after because that lane eventually became the hard shoulder? I thought that sign meant you could just stay in your left hand lane because the lanes didn't merge until further instruction?
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. It just so happened that the lane ended soon after so the sign is right but that lane just isn't very long.

Hi, sorry this is not related to motorway driving, but I have a question that is worrying me. I have had over 40 lessons, with the same instructor. Since they have had a new car I have noticed more and more things that may be holding me back, hopefully this is just me being paranoid. Turn in the road is a prime example, I find this really difficult, not the maneuver itself, but the combination of the maneuver and observations. If no one is around IE vehicles or people I manage fine. its when someone appears from out of the blue or a vehicle suddenly shoots behind. I do see them but as I am about to apply the breaks my tutor still does it for me. I just cant see these people quick enough without compromising the position of the car. An example would be turning backwards looking right then behind checking position, looking right looking back Someones there, before I have chance to apply the break, my tutor has done it for me, this has happened a few times. Am I paranoid and need to look quicker, it seems I have to check all positions at once. . Sorry its long winded. I am due my test on the 4th, I will hopefully have had another 10 lessons by then (I am now having 3 double lessons a week)
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+loupixuk I've done a video about the turn in the road here kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6mri3SOl8Skd7s. I've done one about clutch control as well so it's just a case of combining the two things. There's a bit of practice involved but this problem is usually caused by not enough clutch control practice, making the car move too quickly and not giving you time to look.

What is the Toll? Why do you pay there? Is it a faster way to get to where you want to go?
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+NotYourAverage999 Very few people ever use it and it's planned to be free soon. It was a total waste of money, everyone said that it would be unused and unwanted but they put their heads down, built it anyway and now 15 years on they've finally admitted it was a mistake. It used to be £1 for a car when it first began, now it's £5.50 each way or £11 each way for lorries.

Paul, I'm soon to take my practical test (should be a breeze) and have looked into insurance policies for the car I'll be given (parents old car). The policy I will be going for requires me to have a black box fitted. My question is, would it be worth getting a dash camera too? What, if any, would you recommend? Thanks in advance, Michael
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+Bolt Storm If you mean getting a dash cam to reduce insurance then it won't. In the event of a crash the insurers won't want to see any footage because you can hang yourself with it. On three occasions I've offered to show insurers footage, sent them a link and I can tell from the stats that nobody ever watched the video. If on the other hand you want to make KZbin videos or just have general protection they're great.
@boltstormofrs
@boltstormofrs 8 жыл бұрын
+1stdrive Thanks for that, it's a shame they won't look at the footage for additional evidence. Still, at least the telemetry of the black box should suffice.
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+Bolt Storm They won't look at the blackbox either. Insurers want as little info as they can to make their case as simple as possible, unless it's likely you're at fault or it's a big crash. Imagine you get hit from someone behind, it's a simple case of them hitting you from the back, their fault, case closed. If you complicate things by showing a video which shows you were maybe in a bus lane when you shouldn't have been, distracted by chatting to a friend, going 1mph over the speed limit etc. then the other party could use any of those things against you. In most cases, the less info you give the better and if you start even saying you have any kind of evidence you'll find the phone line suddenly has problems and they can't make out what you're saying.

Who is at fault if an accident happens during the pincer movement?
@1stdrive
@1stdrive 8 жыл бұрын
+adrian19990525 That depends on signals, who moved first, the position of the cars. It wouldn't matter much because you'd probably be dead anyway.

Pretty sad when I can recognise the motorway in question as I live near it and travel up/down it quite frequently.... On another note, I think motorway driving should be part of the practical test. The amounts of clowns driving dangerously on them nowadays, probably due to not having a clue and having to 'teach' themselves by watching another clown is shocking. Driving lessons, when a learner is more advanced could help alleviate this.
@richardwayne1990
@richardwayne1990 8 жыл бұрын
I think it should be a forced lesson after you've passed your test your forced to do a pass plus. otherwise you should have your licence. also think there should be a refresh course ever 10 years that people should take. roundabouts and motorways are key examples because most older drivers don't have a clue what to do
@owenabz

+owenabz If there are no signs then the national speed limit from the motorway still applies. I can't remember if there are any other signs there or not.
