Thank you so much mate. I am struggling with my combi drill driving or undoing screws. I have found the answer. A minute ago I tried and it worked. Never realised there were different types of drill bits for specific type of screws until I saw this video. Thank you very much for making this video. Just bought a Dewalt drill bit set with all the different types of drill bits available, should come in quite useful. Also I have some Wickes multi purpose screws which require a PZ bit, it doesn't say PZ1, PZ2 or a PZ3. So using a pass or fail test, the thicker PZ3 seems to be the exact fit.

Great video describing difference of Pozi and Philips, way to many people who don't know or care about this. Pretty much 9/10 times when I find a destroyed PZ/PH-screw, it's because of someone has used the wrong bit before. But very often I find that even though the screw head is messed up, when using the correct bit, it's no problem getting the thing out (and of course, replace it if possible). But, it's pretty easy to understand why that is here in Sweden, since all PH and PZ-screws goes by "Star screw" or "Cross Screw" (directly translated). I don't think I've ever heard anyone in Sweden refer to a Philips-screw or Pozi-screw (except for myself, that is).

Sort of funny story. I was at a local vendor that deals only in screws, he has nothing else. And the person before me was having a fight with the poor vendor about the proper bit. The guy even had a theory about how the numbers on the bits didn't represent the size. So more out of boredom more than anything i said "well then why don't you look at the box that had the screws in, you should find the name of the screw head that's also on the bit". Whilst the shop vendor looked at me like a savior with shield and sword the guy totally had the "like i grew a second head" look. The screw/bit system is just about one of the simplest in the whole industry short of (as you said and shown) giving you the bit with the box of screws. Some people... Anyways, ramble/rant over, i liked the video, really informative and to the point. That's one of the things i love about this channel. No pointless information, no overdoing, just the job done right.

Had to watch several videos learn enough about drilling screws. One showed the importance of lining it straight and to start it by jabbing the wood, another showed a very useful drill guide that makes starting it much easier and safer, another showed how to stop wood splitting and screw stripping with pilot holes. I learn from you that a pz (never heard of it) screw top is different than phillips top. I learned from a comment here that you can set the torque to prevent stripping. I assume these videos are all for newbies like me. Why don't you instructors just make it comprehensive in the first place?

Showed the video to my wife, hoping you would make two simple points. 1 - it never hurts to pre-drill, and it's actually necessary when working with smaller pieces of wood (like kitchen cabinets). 2 - never use a power drill as a screw driver (the kind you plug into a power socket). It is too powerful and not suited for driving in screws. I noticed you use clamps, but you did not mention those. I also find it helpful to use dish soap to lubricate screws sometimes. It prevents squeal and can make the job easier. Good info on the different types of bits, though.

I bought a Ryobi drill driver a few months ago and for some reason I find it difficult to drive screws into certain types of wood, well any wood really but particularly an old garden gate post. No matter what type of screw bits I've used (making sure I've got the right type of screw bit of the screw and making the sure the drill is set to drive mode), it really struggles driving screws into wood. It does manage to pull screws out but this depends on the screw as often itscrew won't budge, but I suspect this is because the screw is seized or the wood its screwed into is too hard (I'm talking about a 20 plus yr old gate post here). Really can't understand why it doesn't do the job, and as far as I know the drill isn't broken. It will of course drill holes into wood and masonry, but as far as screw driving goes it does a really poor job of it. When you try and drive a screw either vertically or horizontally, drilling screws into material like wood makes the screw wobble all over the place and hard to keep the drill steady, certainly isn't effortless like the in the video. Anyone know what could the problem or has anyone else had the same problem?.

I bought my brother-in-law a Ryobi 18v Drill/driver once, I went to his house once to do a job and borrowed it. The driver was pretty awful to be honest, a few years later I got him a Hitachi, which is far batter but not in the same league as Dewalt or Milwaukee. Thanks for the comment 👍

@@ultimatehandyman Dewalt and Milwaukee are expensive though (especially Milwaukee, and Makita) where it's like 300 quid for a drill lol. @ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Jill It normally says on the box of screws which type of driver you need to drive them in, such as PH2 or PZ2. You can tell by looking at the screw if it's a Philips or Pozi as a phillips head is just a cross, but pozi is a cross with a smaller cross inside.

J Warren Not sure if this is any interest to you still but screws which require a Phillips bit will have a simple cross where the screw bit enters the screw, however the screws which require a Pozi bit have a cross, with faint lines in between each section (Basically 8 lines for pozi, 4 lines for phillips). It's hard to explain over text lol. If you Google it you'll see exactly what I'm on about. One you know, it's so easy to tell the difference between them.
@RustyPetterson
@RustyPetterson 7 жыл бұрын
Why on earth this wasn't mentioned at the very start of the video, I have no idea... The reason why Posidriv screws & bits are so good (compared to Philips) is because they have a much larger surface to surface area. So yes, if you can see the faint lines on the screw, use a PZ bit.

I actually love watching your videos because its clips like this that teach me something new though I presumed I already know how to do the basics before watching the video. My question is *****, how do you identify the screw by eye? For instance identifying a PZ-1 screw from a PZ-2.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 10 жыл бұрын
I'm glad the videos help ;-) The best way to get the correct bit is to check on the box of screws. If this is not possible you can often tell by the size of the screw and the head. Smaller screws are normally PZ1 and the larger screws go up to PZ4. For most screws it will probably be a PZ2 as this is probably the most common size of screw head. You can always try a bit in the screw and choose the bit that fits it best. Thanks for the comment

@ultimatehandyman

I normally apply lots of pressure, to prevent the bit from camming out of the screw. You should never be able to snap the head off though, apart from decking screws etc. You only need to look at most decking screws and the head will shear off. What about a screw known as a 'dual slotted/phillips'. What bit should this one have? Or just use the closest fit? Another question is that the torque ring has jammed on the cordless screwdriver? Is there a fix for this do you know? Thanks!

@ultimatehandyman

If you are using the wrong driver bit, it will chew the end of the screw up. If the screw won't go in at all it might be that the screws are cheap and require a pilot hole first. Thanks for the comment 👍

Hello, thanks for the vid...Just tell me please..did you drill the hole when you used the overlong screw with the Dewalt-Screwdriver?? How is the proper procedure to use long screws on hardwood? Is an impact-screwdriver enough or is it always comon to drill first the hole and then you use the screwdriver... By the way...my bosch gsr 10,8 (blue) was toooo weak when I tried to screw in 8cm long inox screws (m5) into hardwood, and I drilled the hole even before I screwed them in. Thanks for help.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, I drilled a pilot hole for the really long screws first. For most hardwoods it is best to drill a pilot hole first, although some screws are self piloting and self countersinking but they might struggle in some hardwoods. Inox screws (stainless steel) should always be used with a pilot hole as they tend to snap easily. Thanks for the comment

Two things used to wind me up when I was on site. Watching so-called experts driving in long screws NON-STOP and they were wondering why a number of these long screws were snapping. The second one was when they kept pulling the drill away from the screw before releasing the trigger and they wondered why their driver bits were wearing out. I laugh about it now but I guess some folks never learn eh! Chez lol

@ultimatehandyman

In some circumstances you can only reach some screws using a longer bit holder, unless you hold the drill on a slight angle. One example is if you are fitting a fireplace to a wall, it often requires fixing to wall and can only be reached using a longer bit holder, or the chuck can damage the fireplace. That's the only reason I can think of. Shorter is better for me ;-) Thanks for the comment 👍

You need a pilot hole, when using poor quality screws. I normally use double thread, self countersinking screws. A pilot hole should always be drilled into hard woods, even with good screws 👍

Help needed: I am a total beginner with diy, and having watched many videos, in an attempt at learning the basics, I am struggling with one. I note how many use red wall plugs. Ive looked up, and note these are for screws 5.5 x 25mm (is that right?) and also brown plugs for screws around 7 x 40mm (again is this right?). Ive tried therefore looking on ebay/amazon for screws 5.5 x 25mm and 7 x 40mm, however I cant find any? If these are the right sizes, how come im not finding any. In regard red and brown plugs, what screws do you use in them. Anyone can answer this question, as I really need the help. Please dont take the mick, we all have to start some where. Thanks buddy, already seen that one. Im still left unsure what size screws to put in red and brown plugs. I know they say 5.5mm for red maybe 6mm, and 7mm for brown. What lengths though? the red is what around, 25mm in length, so is that how far you can go, or can you go longer, and itll just push the ends open. Same with brown plugs, they say again, 7mm, but ive looked and the length is around 40mm. So is that the limit, or again, can you get longer, which will push the ends open? I tried looking on ebay for screws that are 5.5 x 25mm and 7 x 40mm but cannot find any, so im so confused, as these appear to be popular sizes when using red or brown plugs. What size screws do you all put in red and brown plugs. I know brown is meant to be 7mm, but what can you get away with, same with red plugs, they are meant for 5.5 to 6mm, but again, what do people actually put in them, and lengths?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 6 жыл бұрын
You can put any length screw in a plug, providing the hole is deep enough for the screw, or the screw will bottom out. 40mm long screws will be fine, as long as the hole is deep enough, the screw will go right through the plug. There is a chart on this page, which should help- www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/how-to/fasteners-fixings/wall-plugs Thanks for the comments

Wood splitting can happen for a myriad of reasons, the thickness of the material, how far you are drilling/screwing from the edge, what type of wood you're screwing into, the quality and the the size of the screw. If youre unsure always pilot drill it.

I'm constantly having the bit pop out of the screw, even if I use the bit provided. Part of the reason is that no matter how much I try, the screws often end up going in sideways. I then struggle to maintain that exact angle, very frustrating!
@GMAN420BC
@GMAN420BC 6 жыл бұрын
The screws are going in sideways AND the bit is popping out for the same reason. Those are symptoms. The problem is your bit and screw is not forming a straight line to the hole. At some point your are pulling the drill sideways. If its early in, the screw goes in crooked. If the screw is in 1/4" or more, the drill pops out.
