Because it holds your colors steadfast. They will fad easier if you do not do it and the color will come off on your hands and etc... I really recommend this step. If you put all the effort into dying them, you want them to last. Thanks for the question. Miriam Joy

Can you try it on wheat straws? I am struggling with it.

I have not tried it but I do not see why it would not work. Remember straw is a yellow base so colors like blue would be more green.

In the video I show you how to use Rit Dye. The kind you find in the grocery store.

How did you dry it? Do you ever coat your raffia with anything after using it in crafts?

I just put it on a table on a towel and let it dry. You could set it out in the sun if it was a warm day with no wind. I would most likely put a little matte spray varnish to help hold the color. Any kind as long as it says non-yellowing.

I would try bleaching it because the base color is yellow making it hard to dye it white.
