Really glad I clicked on your video. I am making a headboard out of several live edge boards and I was thinking I would have to run a long french cleat horizontally across the entire span of the headboard. I honestly never thought of doing it this way. You just solved it for me, Thanks!

Pro tip: add a small block of wood to the outside of the outermost cleats on both sides so that your headboard won't slide sideways and fall. These little stoppers can be added to the wall or the headboard.

I don't mind screwing into the wall, but I'm using an antique footboard (finished on both sides). I don't want to screw into the wood because someday someone may want to use it as a proper footboard again and the screw holes will be visible. Can I attach the french cleat to the legs? This would mean that the attachment is at the bottom (about 12 " from the floor) , not the top.The "headboard" will be about 14" tall. Will this low attachment be secure?
@dougwaymer36736 жыл бұрын
A metal cleat would get it snug to the wall. That 3/4" wood will be visible from the sides, unless it was recessed with some trim on the door.

very good. How for example over king bed 80' door would need several how do you ensure door mount is 100% on the wall cleat for mounting?
@campbejouc9 жыл бұрын
***** Hello - assume 3 or 4 cleats over King size? We would have Cleats on door & matching Cleat on the wall; any cheat or trick to make sure those middle most cleats are 100% lined up when you screw in? Maybe easier to just one long cleat ?
@dudestoptrolling3 жыл бұрын
How do you mount the cleat to the wall? If I have a drywall I want to mount to, do I still need to predrill a hole and add in anchors?
@chrisnotap3 жыл бұрын
If the headboard is heavy, like mine was, you should mount the cleats on a stud. If the head board is light, you could use anchors.
@dudestoptrolling3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisnotap thank you for replying! I expect my headboard will be pretty light and will probably use anchors :)

What's the best way to secure the pieces of wood to the wall in a house where there's block (cinderblocks, not regular bricks) behind the drywall, where it's not going to pull the wood out of the wall from the weight of the headboard? I don't think the headboard I plan to get (from Ikea) is going to be super heavy, but I don't know yet.
@chrisnotap Жыл бұрын
TapCons are best for concrete or block.

How did you do it so the cleat on the headboard lines up exactly with the matching cleat on the wall?
@chrisnotap5 жыл бұрын
Measuring tape.
@willmcgregor71844 жыл бұрын
Robert B If you mean when hanging the headboard on the wall, you could make a small pencil mark on top of headboard & cleat that would barely be noticeable.

How would I mount a metal headboard to the wall?
@chrisnotap8 жыл бұрын
This would work with metal too. The part on the wall would be the same but the part on the bed would need to be drilled in order to attach the other part with metal screws.

My headboard only had one leg the other broke so I took them off. Now it's sitting across the back of my bed on my night stands but it keep falling over on my bed. I want to do a hanging headboard because my 4 year old sleeps with me sometimes and I don't want it to fall on my child. What can I do? I don't know who can help me.

Does the part on the wall need to be in the studs? I live in an apartment and can't find studs on this particular wall?
@dmtdj7 жыл бұрын
Ideally, it should be put into studs. In your situation, I would recommend using self-drilling drywall anchors. Just to be safe, I'd get ones that are rated for 75 lbs.

I found your video because I looking for someone who hung the whole bed on French cleats, floating bed.
@robertmorrison31402 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have a very heavy headboard, a 62x35 birch 3/4in plywood. If I use 3/4 cleats, it's going to stick out significantly. I would rather avoid that. What if I used thinner, say maybe 1/2in ply cleats, but used multiple. Would it make it secure enough you think? Or maybe you have another idea ?
@chrisnotap2 жыл бұрын
Remember, the 3/4 inch cleat once mounted will only stand proud of the wall by 3/4" right. Not 3/4 x 2 = 1.5". Cleats are extremely strong and if you had 4 spots with 4 inch by 4 inch 1/2 inch cleats, I'm sure you'd be fine.
@robertmorrison31402 жыл бұрын
@@chrisnotap I appreciate it. If you'd allow 1 more follow up: I've seen thinner metal cleats. That would allow even less space between headboard and wall. Any opinion on those ?
@chrisnotap2 жыл бұрын
@@robertmorrison3140 I've never used those but it should work if the weight rating is followed on the package.

I have a REALLY heavy piece of waney edge cedar, roughly 6' x 2.5' x 3" thick. I was planning on mounting it to the wall as a headboard. Would this method be OK, or would you recommend some support underneath too?
@chrisnotap8 жыл бұрын
I would say that it would work. If in doubt, make the blocks longer to attach to 2 studs instead of one. Sounds like a nice piece of wood.

It might look nice, but how is that practical? Once you sit up in bed you bash your head on the bit that sticks out! Totally impractical.
@chrisnotap5 жыл бұрын
It's more to do with the method of hanging it on the wall, not the design of the headboard. But yes, you are right. It doesn't allow you to sit up comfortably.
