If you’re interested in an easier way, draw your cut line on the protective paper then take a finger full of Vaseline and smear it down the line. The Vaseline being clear let’s you see where to cut and you can cut at a higher speed with a jigsaw without the acrylic melting and gumming up on the blade. It also gives you a really nice clean edge. You could cut it on a table saw this way also.

Dish soap works for this too, this also absorbs the heat as well but easily washes off from the acrylic and the saw or drill bit. (Remember to sharpen/grind off the the tip or bite edge of the drill bit if you’re drilling, though, to keep the bite edge from catching and wandering along the surface.)

Never try to cut polycarbonate like this, it kicks back even can take teeth of the saw blade, also never cut polycarbonate with heat as it gives off toxic fumes.

I used to be the lead table saw operator at Midwest Trophy shop in Oklahoma and I used most of the methods you used to cut acrylic. I do have one more tool to mention and it's the one tool I use the most for many different types of material, and that is a radial arm saw. Similar to the sliding mitre saw but more versatile. Great video for those who don't know how to cut acrylics or plexiglass. Thanks for sharing...

I have been making things from acrylic since I was at school, it is one of the easiest materials to work with and can easily be cut to shape, polished or bent. Acrylic is waterproof, can be used externally with no issues and is often guaranteed for 10 years! I hope everyone has a great Sunday ;-)

You should be able to cut 2mm thick acrylic providing the teeth on the blade are fine enough and you take your time with it.

Just replaced the siding on my 12' x 8' back porch with 7 sheets of 8' x 4' x 1/4" clear acrylic. Got the metal jig saw blade thanks to this video's recommendation and it worked like a charm. Little issue with the blade overheating, but just required stopping for a few seconds and then starting again. I love my fish tank. LOL. Thanks.

As usual very informative and thorough vid. Thank you. I've just completed a job using 10 by 4 x 2mm thick acrylic sheets sheets used to line walls in areas used for food preparation, in fact its a cellar in a pub where the barrels are stored. Using large sheets presents a problem but I used nothing more than a hand saw (crosscut) at a shallow angle and sanded one of the edges for a decent finish. I have to stress that my cut ends were hidden by joining/corner strips, but as long as you don't force the saw through the material i.e. let it cut, the finish is very respectable. I used the same to resolve an issue in my lads salon, part the kitchen area goes under the pavement from the street above. Applying all sorts of paints and anti mould paints did nothing. Re-lining with fresh plasterboard battened away from the wall only delayed things. The plastic/acrylic sheeting has done a really good job as well as brightening a fairly dingey area. Keep em coming, I really enjoy your vids. Regards Mike

Some great tips there. For certain cuts I find lubrication really helps, especially for drilling. Plain soapy water is all I use. Of course for things like a table saw or bandsaw this is not really a good idea but it works fine with a jigsaw or coping saw.

Good video with great info. We’ve found that acrylic welds itself if you remove the masking before cutting. If you leave the masking on, no problems with re-welding when using a jigsaw. We cut thousands of meters of 4.5mm and 10mm acrylic per year and use a Festool Plunge saw with their guiderail. Beautiful cut, safe to use and we cut probably three to four times faster than shown.

Thanks for this great video. I need to cut a square hole out of the centre of a 3mm-thick acrylic sheet, but I'm not sure what would be the best option. I would think a jigsaw would be great once I've already got a hole made, but for making the first cut, a jigsaw wouldn't work because the end of the blade doesn't have the teeth. Can you recommend any particular tool please?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
It depends how big the hole is and if the bit that you remove will be scrap. If the square that you remove is scrap, you can drill a few holes in that, then put the jig saw blade in and cut out the square. If you want both pieces, you can plunge in using a circular saw (providing the hole is large enough). A laser cutter is the best option, it would cut out the square in the centre and both pieces would be perfect, unfortunately I don't have access to one of those!

Just one thing if you didn't know: there is a handheld knife that uses a hooked blade specially made for cutting acrylic. 2 Japanese makes(OLFA & NT Cutter) have been available for many many years. While these hook knives do a 10-times better job, they also make the job much easier and faster than the conventional knife you used in the video. Price around AU$10-20.

Love this. You didn’t mention the differences between cast and extruded though. For the average user it’s not hugely important but will impact on the cut finish. Also, do you flame polish the edges? I discovered this technique a couple of years ago and it makes all the difference when manufacturing aesthetics pieces.
@ultimatehandyman

I've never used extruded before. I bought a cheap flame polishing machine from China, but only used it once. I don't make much using clear acrylic and flame polishing can only be done on clear (or so I'm told) Thanks for the comment

Ultimate Handyman I did it with a fine grade paper on a mouse and flamed the edges with a plumbing torch. It does look better on clear, you’re right. But as a matter of course i “flame grill” everything that will be seen now. Loving the channel - at last someone who really knows their stuff 👍👍👍

No, I even bought a flame polishing machine a few years back. The only problem is that you can only flame polish clear acrylic, as flame polishing can burn some pigments that are used in coloured acrylic 👍

I'm wondering how to trim off about a MM from a 30inch perspex filter panel that diffuses light in my led tv set. The edge lit led have melted the edge a little and it causes a bit of light bleed scattering because the surface is slightly melted where the led got hot. Would a fine sandpaper bring back the clear glassy edge so light beams nice and smooth? I can't just spin it 180 degrees since its design is 1 way light diffuser.

The speed and amount of cutting teeth are key. As you get thicker ideally you want a blade with less teeth and run slower. Proper chip removal is key to keep from welding itself. Thin material you do need more teeth though but still slower speeds. Our shop specializes in machining all types of engineered plastics. We’ve been doing it for nearly 50 years now. You learn loads of tricks over the years. There are many different types of plastic and some can be quite a challenge to get good finishes on. UHMW for example. The fewer the cutting edges the better. There’s a guy with a video telling you to cut with an angle grinder and a metal cutting disc. YIKES that is so wrong! All of your methods are good however 👍🏼👍🏼

I have a 3/8 thick piece I need to cut and I noticed you didn't use a bandsaw? Are bandsaws to fast of is it better to use a jig saw
@ultimatehandyman

I don't have a bandsaw, but if you have one it will be perfect, if you can adjust the speed make sure you do not have it cutting too fast. Thanks for the comment 👍

Try and use a blade with more TPI as you'll get a better cut, also don't have the blade set too fast. Thanks for the comment 👍

any advise on how to cut a square hole on my acrylic pc case without any electrical tools? im thinking, heating a plastic cutter and cut the acrylic with only hand power, reheat and repeat, will it work?

It depends how thick it is. You also have to be careful of the fumes! It might work on really thin stuff.

what about a sheet of 1/8" thick acryllic 24" xn 28" but I wanto shave off ~6mm. Sory for mixed Imperial and metric use.. best jisaw blade type? and its flecxy so I need a carboard base on a table to support?

Yes, I would definitely put it on a sacrificial piece of timber, such as plywood or chipboard to prevent it flexing. A fine-tooth jigsaw blade (one suitable for aluminium will be fine) 👍

Fantastic video! I didn't know Acrylic welded itself back together!? Came here to learn how to cut a sheet of clear acrylic to repair a Makibox 3D printer I bought which is missing 2 panels the prev owner prob broke during frustrated Assembly as I found Parts fitted upside down). I used to live in N. Manchester. Are you an Oldham lad? Great skills anyway, excellent video.

Yes, if the blade goes too fast it can weld itself back together. I'm from Darwen, Lancashire- not far away from Oldham ;-) Thanks for the comment

Does a metal cutting jigsaw blade work better than a plexiglass cutting blade?

I'm not sure. I think they will be pretty similar to be honest, but the dedicated acrylic blade should be slightly better 👍

Yes, heat is always an issue when cutting plastics. Best demonstration of this was a new manager at a plastics company who decided he could cut up a 100mm nom slab of Delrin with a chain saw. The beam saw could only accommodate 95mm max. All became very ugly very fast.

Finally, I think that evolution rage table saw looks fantastic - I particularly like the sliding part which is probably ideal for crosscutting. I have a Titan table saw which I am not entirely satisfied with - the table is not flat, the blade does not go perfectly vertical and the mitre slots are annoying T-slots and too narrow - are they T-slots on your saw and how wide are they?

I have a question. I’m a handyman like yourself and Bosch makes 2 versions of jigsaw blades for plexiglass. Would those be good for plexiglass with out chipping?

They should both work, typically the more TPI the finer the cut will be (less prone to chipping) Thanks for the comment 👍

Hi Ultimate. I watched your video on SDS Plus power drills. In it you you recommended lightly greasing the end of the bit before placing it in the chuck. That would extend the life of both chuck and bit and also make for smoother operation during use. My questions are:- 1. Is there a particular / recommended type of grease to be used. Or will ordinary lithium based grease do the job -- "axle" grease. 2. How necessary is this practice? On some forums, folks have said they used have SDS drills for years and never greased the bit, without ever experiencing any problems with either chuck or bits as a result. 3. Others have said greasing the bit could actually increase wear in the chuck as dust and other detritus gets stuck in it. Screwfix sell a Makita SDS Hammer Grease. It costs £4.99 for a 30g container. (That is the equivalent of £166.33 per kilo. Pound per pound, it is more expensive than fillet steak!) Granted 30g would probably last my DIY lifetime but are they taking the piss? If you have the time and inclination, your response would be appreciated.

1. I'd use a silicone based grease, you can get a 70g tube on ebay for £3.99 delivered. You can probably get it cheaper than that at a plumbers merchants etc. Sometimes I use silicone grease when plumbing so it always comes in useful ;-) I would not use normal grease as it might not be too good for the seals in the chuck. A 70g tube will last a lifetime as you only need a tiny amount every few months. 2. It says to grease the chuck in the manual, I have never had an SDS chuck fail yet although I do know people that have had bits stuck in them (probably due to the lack of lubrication). 3. They tell you to grease the chuck in the manual, please see number 2 above ;-) Thanks for the comment

I can snap 8mm with a clean break by using a tile scorer instead of using a blade. tile scorer works really nicely; do both side then whack it. On some smaller pieces I clamp it on a piece of round stock on the floor and jump on it! Did many clean breaks like that, often not requiring any sanding, just flame finish.
