Great video, nice when things go right! -how were you able to release cable from instrument cluster without stressing cable? On my 92, 300e, the cable will barely, reach for my hand to fit in, but cable on tight, and can not free it up with my fingers! I'm going through the right side of cluster, but can't pull the cluster too far out! Any advice? Thanks!! Love your passion for the classics!
@VITOSGARAGE3 жыл бұрын
Hi sir and thank you so much for supporting! It’s a little tricky to disconnect the cable. I had to slightly pull the cluster out. I then disconnected all the electrical connectors just by feeling them. Once that was done, I was able to pull the cluster out even more. Finally, I had to reach my hand in from the LEFT Side of the cluster and unscrew the speedo cable. You can also try disconnecting the speedo cable from underneath the kick panel. Patience is the key here like anywhere else!

Start with one end and just put each part on. Going to need a lift or jack it up with stands. I am a light DIY person. If I can do it you can. If it gets frustrating, go do something else and come back to it when you are not wound up. Good luck.

My W201 speedometer and odometer stopped working yesterday (both at the same time). Before that it was always working, but the needle did bounce a little bit. Do you think my speedometer cable needs to be replaced or could it be saved by greasing it? Keep up the great videos, I enjoy them :)
@VITOSGARAGE3 жыл бұрын
Remove the cluster completely and drive without it. See if the speedometer cable is spinning. If the cable is spinning, the problem is inside the cluster. If the cable isn't spinning, It's probably broken somewhere in the middle (most likely you'll need to replace the cable). And thank you for your support! New videos coming every week☺

Hi Vito. My speedometer arrow on w126 of 1989 doesn't move before I reach 35 km/h. Any idea about the problem cause?
@VITOSGARAGE3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting problem, hmmm. Something is most likely wrong with your speedometer gauge itself because those are electronic gauges. Your W126 doesn’t have a mechanical cable (right?). I think it has a speed sensor on the transmission instead of a mechanical cable. That’s why I think that something is wrong with the gauge itself.
@azimutnorth85703 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vito. My transmission does have a cable. I think I will dismantle an instrument cluster and see if there is sign of wear on it first.
@VITOSGARAGE3 жыл бұрын
@@azimutnorth8570 remove the cluster and drive without the cluster. See if the speedometer cable moves once you start driving. If it does move, something is wrong with the speedometer gauge (maybe stripped plastic gears inside or sheared off). If it doesn’t move, the cable might be the problem or the connection going to the transmission. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OIL PRESSURE GAUGE IS ELECTRIC BEFORE YOU DRIVE WITHOUT THE CLUSTER. BECAUSE IF THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE IS MECHANICAL (LIKE ON W123), YOU WILL HAVE AN OIL SHOWER ONCE YOU START THE CAR!

If it’s clicking remove the cable from the cluster and drive as is and see if there’s still noise.

Will this trick also fix a bouncy fuel gauge needle?
@VITOSGARAGE3 жыл бұрын
No. You need to remove the fuel sending unit and clean it from inside, or replace it with new one. That should help with bouncy fuel gauge. If that doesn't help, the problem is in the cluster: either a bad gauge or you may have a bad cluster ground

@VITOSGARAGE2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. I think the problem with yours is loose cable under the car. The speedometer cable has to be firm, it cannot be loose under the car. Check the cable retainers all the way from the transmission to the firewall. Make sure the cable is retained and not loose
