Painting is a lot of work. Not only do you have to tape all of the edges and paint the walls. You also have to remove all of that tape without peeling any paint off of the wall!
Here is a great trick to easily remove the tape from around your edges. No more scoring with a putty knife or cutting with a razor blade. All you need to do is pull the tape away at a right angle and it will come off without trouble.

I flip houses for a living. I've painted 100's of rooms. Best way that I've learned, is to prime the area first. Then tape. Then paint. The secret is to let the paint dry for about an hour and then peel. This gives the paint enough time to dry but not to cure, and the bond between the paint and the tape won't rip paint as you peel. I get perfect lines every time with this method.

Yes! That is an excellent method! Pulling the tape BEFORE the paint cures is really the trick. Once it cures, you end up pulling the paint right off the walls with the tape. Thanks so much for your comment!

That’s a great idea, but that would only work if you’re just doing one coat, which I don’t think I’ve ever done.. if doing a primer/undercoat and two top coats, would you use new tape each time?

You would think this would be uncomplicated but it can turn out to be a disaster if you don't do this right. Wet is a nightmare, spatters the paint. If you wait too long, tape seems to meld into the wall/paint. Our experience is no more than a week and don't be afraid. Go slow. A little at a time. You can do this. If nothing else, you have to touch up a few spots but it's better than watching the paint come off WITH the tape=crying, screaming, etc.

Hair dryer might help some of you. I used dollar tree tape. It was excellent for going down, and blocking paint (shocking), but coming off, was a no go. Once the adhesive was a bit warm, it peeled right off. Also, if your paint peels, cover it with a TINY bit of spackle to stop the spread, let dry, then paint again. I'm on YT to find the best ways to lay a straight caulk line. So far it all looks like a nightmare.

So what does it mean when you mask off the top of a wall to paint the ceiling, and upon removing the tape (Scotch Blue), it pulls off paint from the wall exposing the drywall? …it’s as if the paint on the wall didn’t adhere/bond at all.

@@HowToVideoChannel Nope. The tape pulled off (peeled off), the paint exposing the drywall compound underneath. Weird. Starting to wonder if the paint used on the wall was very poor quality.

Sometime if you have multiple coats of a semi-gloss paint that is pained over the tape. When you pull up the tape, the paint that is over the tape will peel off. The solution here is to use a razor blade and cut around the edges of all of the tape. If, however, the tape is peeling the paint beneath the tape then the tape is too sticky. But it seems like the first option is most likely your issue.

@@HowToVideoChannel I used green frog tape. I left it on over night. In some places the tape also pulled away some of the actual plaster/dry wall, near the skirting board! Oh well it's done now. I didn't want to paint my grey walls, just white gloss the skirting boards. Now the frog tape has pulled off some of the grey paint (which I decorated 4 years ago) and revealed the white undercoat! So it still looks like I've got white paint on my grey walls. People will be saying "should have used masking tape". I DID!!

That is very weird. You used the best tape on the market. Frog tape is specifically for painting. I’d contact the company about the issue. Like you said, it’s done now, but perhaps you can get some free rolls of tape or a refund.

Try not applying so much paint to the tape. If there's a lot there you almost need a knife to cut a line first, but if you go light on the paint where you want a nice line it usually removes much easier

Then you’ll have to remove the tape so that the angle is pulling the tape over itself. For example, if your tape is going vertically on the wall you would pull the tape straight down so that the tape your peeling off is going over the top of the tape that is on the wall.

@@HowToVideoChannel It's less tedious if people try to learn to paint without tape and only use it if absolutely necessary. Some trial and error later after watching a few tutorials (make allowances for touch ups), 'cutting in' using the full length of the end of the bristles of an angled brush is the way to go. Isn't as hard as I thought (once you know the right way to do it). The advice is to use an angled sash brush. I ignored the new frog tape I had just bought (seemed like too much time & trouble to use) and walked 40 mins on a hot day purely to buy this brush. Then I had to walk home lol. The tape is unopened. Holding on to it for now as I may still need it to paint a narrow cornice edge. Off to see if I can find other helpful videos first.
@HowToVideoChannel
@HowToVideoChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@weirdscience6820 Yes, using an angled cut in brush is the way to go. Simply take your time and taping is almost unnecessary. I've found that holding the brush perpendicular to the trim - with the angled tip on the inside right next to where the tape would be is best.

@@HowToVideoChannel Whatever works best for a person, go with it. I get that someone might be more comfortable with tape. It has its uses. I can't think how I could paint say a feature wall and not having to tape off where it meets a side wall. It isn't necessarily straight forward (pun unintended) keeping a steady hand and painting straight, and needs patience. I've mucked up and some corrections are needed but I won't stop doing it. A skill worth learning.

You should always pull the tape when the paint is wet. Same goes for caulking. As an extra measure for obtaining straight lines, ensure that you have put pressure on the edge of the tape, apply paintable, clear caulk to the edge, and - while still wet - paint over the edge. Once again, while the caulk and paint is still wet, remove the tape. If anything bleeds through, it should be the caulk which will dry clear. P.S. I learned this method as well as many other useful ideas from the Paint Life TV channel.
