Nice tip on the ratchet strap! The original drive belt on my GX345 snapped yesterday @ 952 hours. Glad I found this video since the owners manual didn't have a procedure for it. Neither did the Service Manual. I did have some slightly different results though, maybe related to differences between GX335 Vs GX345. I removed the hood, fenders, and gas tank. I used a come-along to hoist the front of the tractor up to get it nearly vertical. Used a ratchet strap to take the tension off that big spring. I picked up the belt(M142499) at my local dealer. I threaded the belt in from the top side, slide it over the HydroStat fan and around the pulley. I didn't have to remove any of the idler pulleys and I didn't have to remove the PTO Clutch(Only the wire). There was enough slack in the belt to slip it over the PTO clutch and around the front pulley. My idler pulley guards were not in the way either. I had the belt replaced and put it back together in a little over an hour.

5:15 youre right. i did have the front jacked up and i layed underneath when i did mine (i didnt watch a video i just eyed it) and it took me about 30 mins. and yes that big spring was a pain. i got a hold of it with both hands and a big screwdriver and pulled it off. but getting it back on was the hard part. i ended up using a ratchet strap on the end of the spring and hooked the other end to a cross piece on the mower like he did but i used the strap to put the spring back on. the reason i took it off was because the belt ripped down the middle and jammed and binded against EVERYTHING and i never did it before so i did it my way. edit: as im watching this more. i remembered mines a standard 335 not a gx. because i didnt have to remove any pulleys or clutch wires and it looks a little different. something else. i didnt have to bend the fan blades. because i only had 1 out of 5 left when i changed it : P 1 1/2 years before i changed it. i found a fan blade on the ground and was like. well crap. oh well. well... when i called to order a belt i figured i should order a fan too. and its a good thing i did because i didnt know THAT many had broke but yea it went like that for a while and i didnt have any issues. dont recommend doing it tho. just incase.

Wow JD did a fantastic job on engineering this one. Doesn't look impossible to do for the average home-mechanic but certainly isn't a walk in the park either. I remember when I was a kid, changing a belt on a riding mower was about a 5 min job and could be done with a a big screw driver and a couple wrenches. These mowers are starting look more and more like a space ship than a piece of lawn equipment.

Thanks for this, replaced my belt this morning. One thing I found out accidentally is that if you hook up a long breaker/torque wrench to the top tension pulley you can pull that to release tension very easily. Still like the ratchet strap idea to hold things over time, but that breaker bar trick made installing/removing the strap a lot easier.

Excellent video once you got past Skippy! I recommend the DiY gang take lots of photos as they take one of those apart so they can quickly rethread the belt. Pay attention to how it comes off. I would have changed the Hydraulic Filter (below ratchet strap) 8:42 while it was up but that could be messy. I did the drive belt on a Ford LX 55. Tricky getting it in the right orientation. Mine is an X 320 with no Hydraulics for steering or deck. Excellent camera work and sound FX too. Don't turn up the music. It is just right.

Maybe someone has already asked with (with 197 comments, but I haven't seen it yet). I'm planning to change this belt myself, because I have a GX335 with a BROKEN drive belt. So, I'm finding this video VERY helpful. Only problem I see is, this belt drives the hydrostat which also drives the lift for the deck. If you can't lift the deck, how do you coax the bar to move up so you can get the belt past it?

Taryl and others who may have a hard time removing Gear to remove steering wheel for drive belt replacement. Mine was not right and wouldn't budge. Go to auto parts store and get a loaner Tie-Rod separator tool, the small one that fits, don't get the big size. Put that sucker above gear and hit with a baby maul, watch as you pound it and work out the last 1/4" by locking a medium pair of vice grips on the steering shaft and use as a wedge for tie-rod tool so you can get remaining 1/4". Man I hope this saves somebody a lot of brain work. God Bless all of us.

I have a GX 255.......had Deere check over the tractor 2019. One of the things they replaced was the transmission belt. I bought the tractor new in 2003. This year I now have almost no reverse movement. Forward is fine.....I havent looked, but geez they just worked on this and the first belt lasted for 16 years! I would assume if the belt was bad I wouldnt be able to move the tractor at all?? No reverse, forward is ok.
