I'm from Nepal and my mom's family is from Assam, my grandmother eats a lot of paan and tamul and so did my grandpa, i too call the raw nuts Tamul and i eat them occasionally by putting them in a fridge, it tastes good chilled, and in Nepal we mainly call it Sualpari and people from the flatlands like myself are absolutely addicted

also it doesn't get you high. the best time to use it is when you're feeling sluggish after a big meal or tired after a long day of exercise. it'll make you feel re-energized. but if you already have energy you'll just feel a bit light headed I guess. results may very. Anyway if you're trying to get high on stimulants go to a bus stop and buy crack. because areca is honestly about as mild as a cup of coffee.

there has been some misconception as areca nuts doesn't cause cancer but tobacco does as many people are addicted to tobacco which is main ingredient to make pan with areca nuts..
@deandeann15413 жыл бұрын
I have read the science areca is a much stronger cause of cancer than tobacco even when there is no tobacco added. Also in some people who have used it heavy for a very long time it stiffens the inside of the mouth these are the people who have a high chance of cancer. I wonder if asian culture has less risk than europeans because asians have used areca for three thousand years? I have seen a european develop a health problem from areca quite quickly.
@k912217 жыл бұрын
I dont know about other parts of NE..but there is one more traditional ingredient that assamese people use with areca nut (Tamul).. this is "mola taankhu"( tobacco leaves processed with jaggery and tamarind)..this is a black sticky mixture which further enhances the flavours of Tamul.
@johnjones_1501 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I wonder if the regional consumption of tobacco with the nut is the real culprit for cancer associated with the nut, since she claims it doesn't seem to be a problem in her village. Of course it could just be that people in her village do get cancer, but they just don't associate the illness with the nut.
@k91221 Жыл бұрын
@@johnjones_1501 Yes ofcourse ...if you go by the records, northeast India has the second highest cases of oral cancer all over India. This is mostly because of the fact that, people from every part of the northeast have a habbit of chewing acne nut (mostly with some form of tobacco)

Though the general used term for areca nut in Assamese is Tamul, but there is a lesser used term gau. The word gau and its other phonetical variants are still used among Bodo-Kachari group of languages. Actually the Guwahati's name has been derived from two words Gau and haat(meaning market). So etymology simply means Areca nut market.
