How To EDIT Photos 'NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Style' | Photoshop & Lightroom

This is my typical workflow when it comes to editing photos with Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom 'National Geographic style'. It's NOT an advanced tutorial but simply how I edit a lot of my photos to achieve this 'NatGeo style' (I just gave it that name ;-). I use Photoshop Camera RAW but you can use Lightroom too to achieve the same result. At the end, you can just save it as a preset and edit your photos in less than five minutes. A simple tutorial to make your photos look better.
So, 'NatGeo style', for me, is not about creating the film look that we know from iconic photos. If you want that, just shoot on film. It's about adding extra depth, contrast and warmth.

Just found your channel. There is no question you have put an incredible amount of time studying and perfecting your craft. This was a great video. I love the way you showed what a preset should be used for and then how to use it. The examples at the end explaining the Basics are the only things you should need to change after applying the preset is great! I think so many new photography junkies miss out on this. Again great video I will watch anything you put out.

This is the first lightroom tutorial that I see that covers color correction with curves, I thinks that curves provide a lot more potentials than split toning. So well done in my opinion!

I worked at The National Geographic Society for 40 years first in the Photo Lab, later changed to Digital Imaging. I worked personally with Steve McCurry and various other photographer ,first with film then digital. As part of my duties I assisted in establishing the standards for editing digital images and helped in the transition from film to digital. I prepared the famous Green Eyed Woman as well as many other iconic images for publication on the cover of the magazine, so I know a little something about editing images for National Geographic. Good video ,but thats not how we did things at NGS

This is great, but I can't seem to do it on lightroom CC. I don't see camera calibration there, except for Camera matching which doesn't have the color slider. Is that the same as camera calibration? Also, I am having trouble adjusting the color input and output. The highest value is 100. Is this setting only limited for photoshop or lightroom classic users only? What would you recommend for lightroom CC?

Thanks for this! A question - is there a difference in cha Hong each of the individual channel curves as opposed to changing the rub point curve since it’s the same settings? And then later reducing the highlights in the red curve?

Hey, man! Have you tried tweaking the curves a little bit? I switched from Pentax to Canon recently and I also have to adjust the settings. It doesn't look the same as when. I edited the Pentax files this way...

Nice video. The topic was super interesting. However, I think it would've been better trying to explain the reasoning behind every change you made. One extra criticism ( I hope you take them in a constructive way): the final image doesn't look exactly the same as the one in the thumbnail, which looks richer and with a golden tone. But as I said, it's a nice video, keep it up!

Señor Calabaza Thanks, man! I’ll take your feedback for the next videos! And teah, the problem is that after uploading to KZbin, the video gets desaturated and has less contrast. I try to compensate it by adding extra before I upload but still, it’s really difficult to a achieve the same colors :-(

It is a bit of a hassle to translate this to Lightroom Classic since you can't enter input/output values in the tone curves for the different channels.

MatthewJackson 265 That’s why you need to try it instead of just applying a preset. See what every setting does to your image and analyze. That’s how I learned it too. It’s not that difficult to figure out. Don’t just blindly put the values, observe what changes with every setting. I’m just sharing one of my editing workflows here and most of it is personal taste. If you want it to look like this, you need the exact values or it won’t work.
