Good choice on DT, is one of the great hits lately in graphics software in cross platform FOSS .

I really like your videos, how well structured they are and the way you explain it. Very useful. I started to link your videos in reddit. I believe a lot of people need this kind of help and just don't know your channel. A small note on my side. After a cut, further you speak, your voice gets a little bit lower over time, until next cut. Then suddenly your voice raised. Its not a big deal, and probably a good idea to start a new "paragraph". The difference is just a little bit to harsh in my opinion. I just wanted mention this. Keep up your good work, overall it is well done and the best kind of in English.

@20:07 you used Shadows-highlight Directly on the Image layer, but later @20:37 you kept the Vignette in a separate layer. Is it also possible to keep the Shodow-Highlight or Exposure or Saturation effect on a separate layers staked on top of each other? I mean what if I need to go back and tweak again? Thanks in advance.

Hey! This tutorial was amazing! Btw I have a huge problem... I installed both Gimp and DT but when it comes to open the CR2 images from gimp it doesn’t recognize DT (it tells me I have to download it although I’ve already downloaded it!!)... I’m quite desperate, what should I do?

Very helpful video. Thanks. I am trying to use darktable and gimp effectively as I am new and want to develop my own workflow. I believe that darktable is lossless so I want to use it as much as possible. When you went to gimp several of the things could have been done in darktable. Was there a reason for not doing that? In my ignorance, it seems the light source could not be done in darktable. Are there other things that should be done in gimp to get better results? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello. Thank you for all the most interesting and useful videos! They are intuitive and I have learned a lot from them. I am quite keen on taking your Udemy course on darktable. The software updates twice a year. The latest update of December 2021 is quite substantial I believe. Will you be updating the course any time soon? I would like to learn the latest version. Thank you.
@DaviesMediaDesign2 жыл бұрын
Hey Zane - it is more likely that I'll create a separate course with the updated versions rather than updating the existing course. The existing course covers Darktable 3.4, so there are several new features missing. Hoping to get an updated course up soon!

A question. I have just got a DSLR and am taking phots in both raw and jpg. The major issue I have encountered is simply being able to easily view and edit delete ones that aren’t worth working with. I have gimp and darkroom but have just found them to be so tedious to do the most basic sorting. Any tips as I am sure I am missing something pretty obvious somewhere.

Good to see Darktable complimenting your Gimp stuff 👍 Checkout the perspective, lens correction and haze removal; can't easily do these in Gimp. I've used these filters for local newspaper pics.

I'm loving your tutorials. I'm in middle of making the switch to darktable from lightroom. I would like to adjustment temp and tint locally; within a mask. I see you can't mask white balance or make an additional instance. Is there a way to adjust these to settings locally? It's something I do in lightroom a lot... just warming up and cooling down during some dodging and burning. I tried using the color tone with radial mask, but it's not exactly the same. Thanks.

Hi Michael! Great video, but I have one question!! How do you go from Gimp back to darktable? When I open my original raw photos via Gimp, it opens darktable automatically. However, darktable won't open if I access an already-edited photo. I need help! Thanks! :)
@girlgamergigi62424 жыл бұрын
Not kidding I have just spent 2 hours trying to edit photos in RawTherapee then open it in GIMP, when that didn't work I tried doing the same for Darktable to GIMP. Neither worked. I have a Mac, any advice or reason as to why I can't do this?
@wrightselections4 жыл бұрын
Forgive my super-novice question... I'm using DT 3.0.0 and my Color Zones module looks very different. Those lil' triangles at the bottom aren't there for me and when I use the color picker to sample from my image, say for saturation, it ends up changing the saturation on everything BUT the color I chose.. I know I'm doing something wrong here but no idea what. I'm sure I also need to update DT and I'll be confused again buuuuut..

Update: I'm now using 3.2.1..

Everything you did in Gimp, except the light source in the end, could as easily have been done in Darktable alone as well.

How do you get rid of all the really ugly noise in the raw files? Every time I try to edit a raw file, there's a metric frigging ton of noise, and I was hoping your tutorial would actually address this problem. Working on Linux Mint, no GIMP 2.10 does not want to work alongside Darktable.
@DaviesMediaDesign6 жыл бұрын
Are the photos dark when you bring them onto your computer? Photos captured in low lighting conditions will usually produce noise. You can always use the denoise features found in either Darktable or GIMP, though these tools will only do so much if your photos were captured in low-lighting conditions with a lens that doesn't perform well in low light.
@SnowblindOtter6 жыл бұрын
My ISO was too high. I lowered it and got a much better result. Still noisy, but acceptable now as far as I'm concerned... I'm really new to this.

It happened to me that I didn't do it in the right order just like Michael suggests in his tutorial (the one recommended by him in the comment below), but just by dragging my RAW file (the one I retouched on Darktable) onto the canvas on GIMP, it opened smoothly! Cheers

Great tut. But, why do use save as jpeg? I always convert the original image to PNG and work on it. JPEG is a lossy compression and creates artifacts when you work with it. I never use JPEGs any more. Always PNG.
@amsedelm5 жыл бұрын
A lot of websites still downsize your pics to a default sized jpeg. If yours is also a jpeg then artifacts will appear. I've tested this and it is visible. The image appears "soft" to the eye. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Why do edit in darktable vs simply exporting the raw photo to gimp and edit there (contrast, saturation, etc.)?
@DaviesMediaDesign6 жыл бұрын
RAW images are uncompressed and contain more data than a JPEG, so you have more flexibility with the image when you edit it in the RAW format first before compressing it to a JPEG.
@matthewc45903 жыл бұрын
@@DaviesMediaDesign Yes, but why not export the image directly to Gimp to make things easier? The flexibility is heaps better that way. Darktable isn't at all intuitive and is a pain in the neck, really.

Please go slower. Whenever I try to follow both your adjustments and the picture you say "here's the before, here's the after", and mostly before one second later you're onto the next step. Maybe just me, but I cannot hold up. Stopping the video and going back, then forward in tiny increments is not really an option. Your content is very good, but at your speed almost useless for me.

Gimp is Bimp. If you can't crop and adjust basic things then what's the point of calling it a photo editing software? The idiot is holding a brush for a photo? It's a Paint a picture nonsense editor..
