I was trying to split up a video I shot of a live performance so I could post individual tracks - Reaper allowed me to do this and then export all cut up items at once into individual files for further fx etc - I couldn't find any video program that did this. Luckily I already have Reaper since I use it for recording. What a life saver.

Do you know if reaper can export midi as a visual representation to stamp onto the movie? I'm wondering how people put dynamic sheet music on videos. For instance, when a musician is demonstrating the C major scale having sheet music alongside that has a marker that follows the notes the musician is playing simultaneously. Does that make sense?

Home Brew Audio, thank you so much for doing this very helpful video. I read through most all the comments and couldn't find where my problem was addressed. I have downloaded and inserted the files in the Reaper directory and am able to see both video and audio content within Reaper along with editing each. However, when I go to render the file to a new video file, the playback audio is absolutely awful, like high pitched. I used the video properties of original recording device (Samsung S6 phone)and put them in the appropriate sections within the render settings. The edited video/audio plays just fine in Reaper itself but not in the rendered file.

Thank you for this very useful video!!! I'll try to share a question here: since I use Reaper to create my own music, I'd like to compose an original score on a video. So I just imported a video in Reaper, in order to verify step by step if the music I'm working on matches with images. Well, unfortunately it seems that the METRONOME time changes (which of course are very important in making music) effect the speed of the video reproducing. Therefore you cannot control the sync between music and video... Is there a way to fix that...? Thank you!
@HomebrewAudioRecording5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Massimo. I don't know how to do that. Since Reaper is primarily an audio program with some very limited video capabilities, I would only use it for quick edits like in the video. For what you're doing, I would think you'd want a program ore dedicated to video, like Vegas or something. But if Reaper CAN do what you ask, you can find out by asking the Reaper Forum here: forum.cockos.com/ Hope that helps.

@HomebrewAudioRecording8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kimberly. glad you like the video. When you import the video, you'll only see its audio track (the one that recorded along with the video when it was made) in the track view. You can see the video in a different window. Then you just open a 2nd track and import the unedited raw audio you mentioned. You can then sync that to the original video either by lining it up with the original audio track (if it's the same audio), or by using the video for cues. Does that help?

I have a question for you: I just recorded a video using OBS and I made sure to export the audio as two different audio tracks. The problem now is when I load it up into Reaper - I only see one audio track and I needed the two different ones because there are different voices on it. How would I go about fixing this so I have two channels? When I hit the properties of the video, I can see it's has a two channel audio track
@HomebrewAudioRecording7 жыл бұрын
Do you hear both voices on the same track in Reaper? If so, you can fix it, though it might be time-consuming. You could create a 2nd track. Then snip out the sections of Voice 2 and drag them down to your 2nd track. That way you'd have each voice on its own track. That would work best is the voices weren't talking at the same time. If you're sure you exported the audio from your video recording, have you tried opening the file in other software to double-check if there are two audio tracks? If you can find both audio tracks somewhere, that would absolutely be the best way to go. Just import the 2 along with the video in Reaper. Then mute the single audio track in reaper and use the 2 original audio files you initially exported as separate audio files imported into Reaper (you'd see 3 tracks). I hope something in all that made sense:-P.

Does the audio stretched affect the video track like Vegas?
@HomebrewAudioRecording7 жыл бұрын
I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. But since Reaper is not primarily a video editor, it has pretty limited capability. I have Vegas and will always use that over Reaper for video editing. I did this video to show that you CAN do some basic things like silencing the audio, adding other audio tracks and cutting out bad takes, etc. But anything beyond that is probably not going to work. I haven't tried doing any stretching (to slow down or speed up the audio) when editing a video in Reaper. So I cant really say what would happen if you tried. I imagine it would affect the video too. But I honestly don't know. My advice would be to try it and see.

Thanx so much for the turorial. I imported a small video (Apple iPhone) into Reaper but as I lwatch the video track it buffers so badly - it makes absolutely no sense. Please can you HELP ?
@HomebrewAudioRecording3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it might be a mismatch in the sampling rate of the audio and that of your interface (if you have one) and/or the project settings in Reaper. Also, the .mov format that iPhones use are massive in size. What I would do first is download the free program called handbrake. Then process the .mov file through it to convert it to an mp4 (though it will say m4a in Handbrake but it's the same thing, effectively). Then wherever you save the resulting file - insert THAT into Reaper instead. That will probably work.

This happens sometimes if you have another program open and your mouse/cursor in that other program. Have you tried clicking on a track in Reaper? That often does the trick.

Try going to the menu bar and clicking "View." In the dropdown menu, make sure there is a check mark beside "Mixer." That should bring it back. also make sure that "Floating Mixer Master" is unchecked. Hope that helps.

Changing the pitch. Original audio is key of G and after rendering it goes to key of somethiing..

Still not sure what you mean. But it sounds like the playback rate got bumped. I would try opening a new project and reimport the video. Make sure the Playback Rate (slider underneath the track window) is at 1.0 (in the middle). Does it sound OK just before you render it - when you play it in Reaper?

Yes, the playback rate was the problem. I just opened a new project and everything was fine. Thanks for suport.

Hi, love the video but I did all the steps of downloading and assigning folders...but Reaper still doesn't seem to recognize the video clip (mp4) I'm using windows 10, reaper 64. What it does do is drop something in track that says offline. ANY SUGGESTIONS???
@HomebrewAudioRecording7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethany. Whenever I see the "Offline" in a track in Reaper, it means I don't have my cursor on the Reaper window. For example, if I have Reaper open and also Windows explorer, and I've been working in Windows Explorer (or any other program window), tracks in Reaper will say "Offline" until I click into Reaper (anywhere on the Reaper window) and start doing stuff in Reaper. then the media appears in the track. I don't know if that's what is happening with you. but let's check that first just to make sure.
@bethanyreynoldsmusic43167 жыл бұрын
No, clicked all over the program. When I right click on the track that says "offline" I just get the media properties box. The only thing I can think of is I have downloaded those encoder files to the wrong place.
@HomebrewAudioRecording7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's it, Bethany. I believe the encoder is only an issue when you want to render the final product from Reaper. What kind of file are you trying to open/insert into Reaper? MP4? Mov?
@bethanyreynoldsmusic43167 жыл бұрын
mp4. Oddly, it works on my old laptop. I just drag it over from the desktop and it loads. All the settings are the same in the VIDEO/REX pref. section.

@HomebrewAudioRecording8 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. I would try to render the video and test-play the result with one of those other programs to make sure it isn't just an editor preview thing - not an actual problem with the video or project in Reaper. I often have flickering/stuttering in my normal video program (Vegas) due to how much CPU it takes to preview it when editing it, even though a final render plays just fine in a player.

Thanks. Things seem to keep changing with how to do this. Were you able to figure it out? It's been a couple of years since I made the video.
@TheMightyN5 жыл бұрын
@@HomebrewAudioRecording I guess that could explain it....glad it still works and you're welcome. Fortunately yes. Turns out that the ffmpeg wasn't compatible to the Reaper I downloaded. Looking back into your video it only allows the 54 or lower dec and format. I wish there had a been a link to these website within your description (unless there is a card up at the top of the video near the end)....that way to avoid getting any misguided links from the commentators. Thank you for the help though these video was great hope to check more of your stuff.

@@TheMightyN Thanks. did you check the link upt up below by Ballarat Records? And I will look into doing a card at the end if I figure out what the newest process is. I thought it actually may be that Reaper includes the encoder now without you having to find, download and install it. Not sure though. I usually use a video editor for my videos these days. but I'll check.
@TheMightyN5 жыл бұрын
@@HomebrewAudioRecording Yes, but I wasn't too sure since there was another link down after it, plus your video showed the "cock" website so I followed with that. I did look at the first link underneath your YT name and now it works. Yeah using REAPER for a video editor does have limits....if only it could trim videos too. Thank you again.
@HomebrewAudioRecording5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMightyN Glad it works now! And depending on what you mean by "trim," Reaper CAN do that with video. If you, for example, want to chop off some excess stuff ant the beginning and/or end of your video, just delete the corresponding audio for those sections and the video will also be trimmed away. The same would be true for any sections in the middle you wanted to delete (bad take, etc.). The only limitation would be transitions between cuts in the middle. It wold likely result in the infamous jump-cut in the audio.
@vonshango63115 жыл бұрын
the part i needed started at 3:32. i'm guessing in v5.x this doesnt apply anymore for windows based on this find (and if true, i'll assume you can do more than trimming video in v5.x too). Playback in Reaper 5 Reaper 5 supports playback of almost any video out there by using the VLC playback engine or the FFMPEG libraries. On OSX it may also use the AVFoundation libraries that come with OSX. The effect plugin "Video processor" provides many different video effects as well. There are some online tutorials available that are just a KZbin search away. Windows VLC , recommended! v3.0.3 as of July 30th 2018 , FFMpeg(shared binary DLL files)or system playback(same as version Reaper v4).

vonshango Not sure, but I think it should still work. The VLC is new since the video, but ffmpeg still works. So I don't see why not.

True that it needs updating. What are the other features you'd like to see me demonstrate? I use Camtasia and Vegas for my video editing, so I don't use Reaper for that.
@kernelxsanders4 жыл бұрын
@@HomebrewAudioRecording Well that's the thing, I'm not sure of a lot of the other features there are, which is why I'd like to see another video lol. I just know that the video editing has come a long way. For instance, I recently edited my first video using Reaper just to get my feet wet in the video editing realm (although I've used other free programs in the past) and I was easily able to add some basic stuff like fade ins/outs, camera zooms/pans, text overlays and stuff like that. But I do know that there is more I could do, I'd just like to see someone demonstrate it. And I just think Reaper needs more hype because it's so awesome!

@@HomebrewAudioRecording For sure. It doesn't wanna play and when I press play I have nothing in the video player and no sound. Any explanation, solution ? Thank you !
@HomebrewAudioRecording7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mahtidle - Usually the only time I see "offline" showing in a track is when I don't have Reaper selected as the active app/program. Clicking on the Reaper window usually solves that. But if you are clicking Play in Reaper, clearly you have it as the active program. So at that point I don't know why you'd be experiencing that. That best thing to do is to check with the folks on the Reaper forum, which is extremely active and responsive. Their forum is here: reaper.fm. I hope that helps.
