Oh man, your production techniques are so good with the yellow cursor you can actually see, the red circling to draw your attention, the thought balloons with text clarification, no pounding music in the background..... as a complete newbie this was easy to follow. Not too fast. Clean and clear. Great teaching. Thank you for such attention to detail and not assuming anything.

First of all, let me tell you that I am SUPER impressed by the elegance, clarity and coherence of your videos. I have also used AUDACITY some and loved it too, so we have that in common. Also, found REAPER recently and was amazed by its power and value. So I am planning on becoming very knowledgeable with it. Therefore I have subscribed to your videos and will visit your website as well with the expectation that your content will help me learn Reaper better and faster. Keep up the good work!

+Home Brew Audio How do I get the right input of my 2i4 to record? I don't see how to get it to input.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 9 жыл бұрын
+nilla003 First you need to make sure you have the 2i4 selected in Reaper (Preferences/Audio Devices) as your recording device. Then in the track control panel (of the track you are trying to record on), click the input drop-down and select the input channel there. If all that is already done and verified, you might want to double-check that you have the track armed for recording (the red indicator will be on if it is). If none of that works, check your operating system devices control. In Windows, check to see if your 2i4 is showing in audio devices. then try selecting that as your default device. Then go into the settings and make sure its recording input volume slider is at least half-way up. Hope that helps.

I ended up going to the routing matrix and selecting the focusrite port there.
@HomebrewAudioRecording

+nilla003 Did that work for you? If so, then great. I'm still curious though, why you had to go to that much trouble. I use the same (well, a 2i2) interface and it's always just worked. But you never know with computers and different operating systems, etc. Still, I'll make a note of that as a potential work-around. Thanks for the tip!

+Home Brew Audio I just tried recording but I keep getting some hissing sound whenever I try to speak. I recorded myself on Audacity and the noise is gone so it's not the microphone. Do you have any suggestions what it could be ?

+Home Brew Audio Doesn't matter I fixed it. Do you have any Reaper guide for kick drum EQ ? That's where I'm trying to improve :(
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 9 жыл бұрын
+Ivo Petrovski What is the problem you're having? In general, EQ for kick is used to help; it play will with bass. You could try opening ReaEQ and applying one of the kick drum presets to see if that helps. In general though, I like to add a few dB (3 to start?) around 2-5 KHz. One other tip for the low end is to NOT boost any frequencies down there. It sounds counterintuitive, but it might make for a tighter and better low end to actually reduce the sub-sonic frequencies (those at 20 Hz and below). See fi that helps. And I'll see if I can make a video specifically for this topic:).

That should be easy enough. Hold your cursor over the left edge of the track (not at the top, but in the middle). The cursor will change into something that looks like this ][. Then click and drag to the right until the part you want gone is not there anymore. Hope that helps. BTW, since Reaper is non-destructive, you can always get that part back by just dragging the left edge back to the left again. Hope that helps.

Reaper does have a built-in pitch correction tool. But that isn't shown in this course. I may add a video for that later. The link to the course is in the description for the video above. I hope that helps.

I work recorded material and I did not see where you covered adjusting the time selection or the ability to see where you were within the recording/
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 9 жыл бұрын
+John Adams Not sure I understood your question, but let me see if I can answer it. Across the top of Reaper you'll find the minutes/seconds, or measures/beats (you can change it depending on what you want to see). And there are grid lines vertically in the track space that corresponds to that. So you always know where you are (either in measures/beats, or minutes/seconds, or both) by where the cursor is. Then you can highlight a time selection by dragging left or right. And you can deselect by hitting the Esc key. Does that answer your question?

Using both Reaper and Audacity is definitely something I would look at. Please let me know - does transferring a file back and forth between the two types of software reduce the quality of the recording?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 3 жыл бұрын
That has been one of those things where the technical answer is one thing and the effect on the listener is something else. Technically, you do introduce some rounding errors and loss of precision. But I defy most humans to be able to tell the difference in these teensy re-arrangements of bits. Add in the fact that Audition mitigates any effect (added digital noise, usually) in the way it processes audio (32-bit processing and dither, etc.) and the differences are so minor that for practical purposes - especially if the audio is destined for internet streaming/mp3 conversion - that it really doesn't matter. Besides, I don't jump back and forth very often. Maybe 1-3 times for some files, and 0-less for others. Hope that screed helped answer your question :-P.

thanks for video tutorial, I've just decided to try Reaper (using Sonar so far), I wonder, after the export, once you import the "result", why is it longer than tracks above?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
I assume the result was from "rendering?" If so, it is possible that there was some silence in the project that got rendered. Does the audio sound the same? Is it slower than the pre-render audio? There may also have been just a little bit of audio at the end that got recorded. Reaper will continue the render until it hits all the audio in the project.Those are other reasons it could end up being longer. What I usually do is select (highlight) what I want rendered, and in the Render screen, choose Render Time Selection. That ensures you get exactly what you want.

great tutorial man learned alot from this...i have 2 questions,1 - when i record my guitar cover in reaper it becomes very noisy like squeaks,slide sounds and other unwanted noise even when i play tight2 - is it better to record DI track first then apply amplitube fX or is it better to record with already applied FX (i am new to recording any help would be much appreciated )
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Godspeed! I like to record with those amp sound FX already in. I don't think I could play a dry electric quite the same way without hearing how it will sound all amp'd up and distorted (or whatever sound you're going for) without hearing it while I play. In Amp Farm (Pod), there are certain settings that can be adjusted on the screen for loud feedback and string squeaks, etc. So I think it's best to try to minimize them there while you're playing/recording. Plus, if you can't hear what's happening with that setting, it's likely that trying to apply the FX after you've recorded the guitar dry and "re-amp" it by applying the amp sound after, you'd get those same noises. I hope this helps. Oh, and 1 more thing I notice - those sounds may seem distracting when you're focused on just the guitar, but I find that once it's in the mix with bass, drums and other sounds, it's often less distracting than it seemed at first.

where do you save your music onto? and how do you record over an instrumental?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
Angel, I save music on my hard drive. And for the 2nd question, you simply create a 2nd track, disarm the 1st one for recording (turn the red light off), arm that 2nd track (turn the red light on), and then record (turn the big red light on in the master channel at the bottom. I hope that answers your question(s):). - Ken

ok is that an external hard drive? and how to I import an instrumental to record over?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
No, it's just my computer's internal drive. That's pretty much the default for computer-based recording. And as for where to get an instrumental to record over - the prevailing assumption is that you would record it yourself, if you're a musician. But if you aren't, and you're looking for background music for voice-overs and videos and such, you'd get the music from Royalty-Free music libraries. It's like buying a stock image. You go to one of any number of RF music sites (just type "royalty-free music" into Google to find some), listen to a bunch of music, and download what you like. Some sites offer free RF music, but with most, you're paying a few bucks for the license. Then once it's on your computer (wav, mp3, etc.) you simply Insert/import the file into a track on your DAW (Reaper, Cubase, ProTools, etc.). Another way to get instrumental music is to use loops. Again, there are free and paid loops out there all over the web. Hope that helps.

Maybe good, but from what I found out, Reaper does not support MIDI. Isn't it? And besides why you can not improve the sound in the Reaper program, you just need to open Audacity?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it absolutely does support MIDI. I use MIDI quite bit and I do it all in Reaper. See my video here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJrVpY1opL-YppY - for just one example. And regarding improving sound, yes you can do that in Reaper as well! I only use Audacity to do "destructive" editing. SOME tasks - such as quickly treating multiple small sections of an audio file - are just easier for me in an external editor. But you still CAN do those tasks in Reaper.

Cant you record while the beat is playing on one bar or do u need to do the vocals alone and then add the beat?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Usually you would do that when recording music. But this example was just to add background music to a spoken voice-over type recording. If I were recording a song, I'd record music first and then record my singing while listening to the music/beats. I hope that answers your question.

Yes thanks 4 the quick respons, so If I wanna record music how do Insert the beat and let it play while am singing because when Inesert a beat and I open a new track and I press arm record either the beat mutes that I hear the vocals or the beat plays and I don't hear my vocals how do I play the beat and singing at the same time. thanks again

That happens automatically. So let's say you put the beat on track 1. Then arm track 2 to record and put on headphones and turn off the speakers to prevent the playback from recording into the mic. Hello Ken. Maybe you can help me? I have been using Reaper for 2+ years. I have a new issue, not sure why this is happening. When I go to record to a new track or at any recording point, it will only record all the other tracks together on that project. This happens on every project old and new (now). I have even re-downloaded my Reaper program to no resolve. (I only use Toontrack and a pocket pod on my program) I have been trying to figure this out for weeks now.

Hi Gary. I've never had that problem, nor have I heard of it happening. I recommend trying the Reaper Forum - forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19 In the mean time, have you tried using a different computer? Also, I'm sure you tried this, but just make sure the tracks you don't want to record to don't have "Record" armed.

Also here's something to try - go to the folder in Reaper - Options/Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder. Find the file called “reaper.ini.” Just change the name of that file to anything (maybe put and X in front of it or something). Then start Reaper. That should force it to create a new .ini file. See what that does.

Thank you Ken. I found the problem! It was something I unknowingly uninstalled from my system, to make room. I'm guessing. After I scanned for issues, it was a, USB error or update, something of that nature. I'm not pc savvy at all.. I do have a new Reaper related issue, a "clicking" sound at random on playback. I'm going to look up here on KZbin. I know what the problem is, I just cant find where to fix it.

Glad to hear you got that sorted. About the random clicking you describe - that sounds like it could be a buffering issue. If you don't find the answer right away, check this thread on the Reaper Forum - forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=45453

Yes, everything will still work the same. I've updated he actual course. But, yeah. KZbin does not allow you to update videos. I'll probably end up putting new versions of everything soon, though.

what volume/gain/settings do you set for your mic before recording?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
+Professah Chase That depends on what mic I'm using - a USB mic or a standard (XLR/3-pin) mic through an interface. For the USB mic, I just about always have to to into the Windows Audio Device manager (Sound preferences in Mac) and test what level gives you a good signal without clipping (going into the red) in Reaper (there's an input meter in Reaper on each track you use for this). Then I set the level accordingly (for me, that's usually about 50% with USB mics!). If I use a standard condenser mic, the input gain is controlled by the audio interface box (I leave the computer audio Device input at 100%). Condenser mics for vocals end up being about the "2 o'clock" position on the gain knob with the Focusrite 2i2, but will change for different interface units. Dynamic mics require more gain, closer to the 75% (3 o'clock position) or higher level. For miking guitar or other instruments, I typically need a much higher input level. I Hope that answers your question.

When I try to drag at the beginning or end of my recorded audio, it won't let me drag it wherever I want it like in your video. When i click and drag, it's removes larger chunks of audio. What setting am I missing here?
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
Ah. Yes, you have the Snap Tool enabled. Just go to the tool bar on the left and click on the button that looks like a magnet (sideways U shape) and click that to turn it off. Hope that helps!

When I record in reaper my audio sounds extremely distorted, until I pan the sound all the way to the left or right. Then it sounds fine, but only comes through one side of my headphones? I've tried duplicating tracks and setting 1 side to left and the other to right, but they cancel out and get distorted again. I've played around with the input 1/2 options and stero/mono options, but still haven't figured it out. I even deleted the program and reinstalled it, thinking it could have been messed up while download. But still the problem occurs and I can't find any advice on how to fix it. I'm using an Asus laptop, NT1-A microphone, Beats studio headphones and I focusrite 2i2newgen, if that helps anyone. Please give me your best guesses on how to fix this. Thanks

Without any other information, I would guess that audio is being picked up from more than one source. I helped someone one time who, ironically, was using an NT1-A. He got distorted audio because his computer's display also had a microphone that was adding to the Focusrite. We found it by going to Audio Devices in Windows and seeing that there were two inputs showing signal. I'd start there.

This is why I'm going back to reel to reel. Menu surfing!!!! DAWs suck! Every one of them. They have yet to make a DAW that you don't have to do a multitude of steps before and after you record. Reel to reel is simple. Easy to use and sound warmer. DAWs are for computer people and lot's of creative songwriters lose inspiration when they have to menu surf and set all the parameters. We want press and record and that's it without being diverted into computer settings. If they ever make a DAW as simple as reel to reel, I'll come back to it but I don't see that happening. Goodbye cruel DAWS!!!!! 8^D

Reel-to-reel is simple? Let's see - you have to know how to thread the machine with tape. You have to know how to physically splice tape, and deal with maintaining the machines. It's just a different type of extra time and effort with a different skillset. And then there is the cost. You can get a professional DAW for $60. A reel-to-reel is just the tape machine. Then you need the mixer and the half-track for mastering. Trying to learn/understand the console and all the cable routing is yet another skillset and source of time and effort. If you already have all those skills and you have the hardware, great. Do that. Nobody is asking you to change. But for people just starting out, the barriers to entry for computer recording is far superior from a cost and knowledge standpoint.

The fact that you still have to use Audacity to help this work tells me that this program is not worth the money.
@HomebrewAudioRecording
@HomebrewAudioRecording 8 жыл бұрын
Steven - you absolutely do not have to use Audacity or any other program at all. You CAN if you want to, and Reaper allows you to sort of connect an audio editor to make that easy if you prefer to work this way. But it's important to note that Reaper is a DAW - you can do just about anything you can think of with audio. Audio editors, on the other hand, are specialized programs that you use to very specific things directly to a single audio file. DAWs and editors are not the same things.

You absolutely can. In fact if you're familiar with Vegas, you'll find Reaper VERY familiar:). Many of the keyboard shortcuts for working in with tracks.

Home Brew Audio I actually just tried FL Studio trial and then the Reaper trial and you're totally right. Reaper is very similar to Sony Vegas and I prefer it much more. It's more simple and has less random stuff all over the place. And it's cheaper.

@anonagain
@anonagain 6 жыл бұрын
No, you don't need an external editor, unless it's for some very esoteric function. Reaper will do most everything that Audacity does - it's just that some people prefer using a familiar dedicated editor for certain things.
