On my Mac mini running Sonoma 14.1.1 I do not have the "Scheme" drop down menu box. The target USB drive is "old in years" but fresh from the factory packaging. Does the physical media prevent some options in the Disk Utility?

I followed each step and, as you said, I got the Operation Failed… message. However when I clicked to eject the volume within device it ejected the device as well! Tried it 3 times and each time the volume and the device disappears. (Sanoma 14.4.1)

If I plug in the USB drive in a windows device. Will it still ask for the password?

Windows won't be able to read APFS or HFS+ so moot. If you use a 3rd party utility like Paragon, it'd either ask the password or not be able to read it. Unsure as I don't use them

This video is only 5 months old. I used Sonoma for this video if memory serves me correctly but I may have been on Ventura. I can assure you it works still.
