Thank you Steve, your step by step is well paced so I can keep up with the directions. Rare in KZbin. But why does photoshop Image Size leap into creating the new dimensions before I even type in the full width. e.g., I start to put in 31.2 width and it begins building the new image when I have barely got the "3" entered in the box, much less the height??
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Hi Louis, Steve here. Sorry for the delay. Are you referring to the Width and Height values being linked together, so that when you enter one, Photoshop automatically enters the other? You can unlink the Width and Height so you can enter both manually, but of course that will distort the shape of the image.

I am trying to take an image from a 1080x1920 video and then print that image so it is very large (poster size). When I check the pixel dimensions of the extracted image, it is 1080x1920. What is the general pixel size I need to print Large images? 4500x5400? Do I need it larger than that? And why is it my 1080x1920 image looks great even when zooming in on my monitor that is 27inches but information on the internet tells me I would only be able to print very small photos (smaller than my monitior screen) with 1080x1920 pixel dimensions? Thank you for your help?????????????????????????????

I just discovered your channel, and first off let me say thank you for providing such clear, concise instructions that even I can understand! A couple of questions... do I want to apply clarity and/or sharpening in LR and then apply upscale? Also, do I apply upscale on a separate layer and if so do I flatten my layers before going back to LR? If I flatten, I won't be able to go back to make changes to that layer, right? Thank you!!
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Hi Thelma, thanks for your great questions. You want to start by doing everything you can with the image in Lightroom. This includes some initial sharpening. But keep in mind that the initial sharpening is only to compensate for any softness introduced by your camera. Output sharpening, where you sharpen the image for print or the web, is different and should always be done as the last step. Once you're happy with the image in Lightroom, you'll want to move it over to Photoshop for resizing, either upscaling or downscaling as needed. Then, as the final step, sharpen it for output. So, edit in Lightroom, then resize and sharpen in Photoshop. I hope that helps.

Hi Steve, is it better to do adjustment layers (like b&w filter), contrast, brightness, etc before or after Preserve Details 2. 0?
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam, it's best to do all of your editing and retouching work first before resizing the image. This will give you the highest quality results. Save the final, edited version as a PSD file that you can then re-open and resize whenever you need.

Great showcase! - I have a question if you may be able to answer, when PRINTING a file at lets say 3x its original size (in 300ppi), will this new PS sharpening technique reproduce better results than LightRoom Output Sharpening? - Thanks in advance!
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcio, thanks for your question! Upscaling an image and sharpening an image are really two different things, and the new Preserve Details 2.0 feature in PS is all about upscaling. If you need to enlarge an image, you'll definitely want to move it from Lightroom over to Photoshop and then upscale it using Preserve Details 2.0 for best results. Once the image has been resized, you can then apply your sharpening. I always do my sharpening in Photoshop rather than Lightroom because Photoshop gives you much greater control over the process.

Is it better to crop an image before or after you adjust image size?
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam, great question. As far as image quality is concerned, it makes no difference if you crop before or after resizing. But if the final image needs to be a specific size, like 8x10 or 11x14 inches, you're better off cropping the image first and then resizing it. Personally, cropping an image is always the first thing I do. That way, I get the composition right before making any other adjustments. I hope that helps!

Stupid question, will this work without increasing the image size? Sorry, I'm new to this.
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question! When you say "image size", do you mean the file size of the image? Whenever we upscale an image, we're adding more pixels, and the added pixels will make the file size larger. The only way to keep the file size down after upscaling it would be to save the image using a lower quality setting. Let me know if that helps or if you have any other questions.
@WayneKrassner6 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for responding , To print the image
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Open the Image Size dialog box (Image > Image Size). Make sure Resample is checked, and leave it set to Automatic (or in CC 2018, change it to Preserve Details 2.0). Set the Width and Height to the size you need for the printed version, and then change the Resolution from 72 to 300. Click OK to close the dialog box. Keep in mind that, depending on the original size of the image, enlarging it may cause it to appear soft. I actually just published a written tutorial on my website that explains the basics of image size and resolution, if you're interested in learning more: bit.ly/2wgsEmH

Using this preserve details method for resizing, image conversion to smart objects for resizing just became dumb.
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel5 жыл бұрын
Smart objects are perfect when you need to scale an object smaller than its original size. Smart objects allow you to scale the image up or down as many times as you like, and rotate the image as well, with no loss in quality. This makes smart objects perfect for designs, layouts and effects when you're not sure what the final size of the image will need to be. As long as you keep the image size below 100%, you can experiment freely without damaging the image. Resizing an image (the topic of this video) is more for print, when you need to enlarge an image beyond its original size so you can print it at a larger size and still maintain as much sharpness and detail as possible. So, smart objects are for scaling images below 100%. Resizing is for enlarging images beyond 100%.
@damitzdesign5 жыл бұрын
@@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel Can you resize a smart object over 100% using the Preserve Details 2.0 technique? Thanks for the helpful video!!! 👍🏼
@PhotoshopEssentialsChannel5 жыл бұрын
@@damitzdesign You can, but resizing a smart object beyond 100% is no different than resizing a normal image. So you'll get the same results whether it's a smart object or a pixel-based layer.
