In this video, we discuss disassembly of the most commonly encountered military surplus rifle bolt mechanisms. Keeping your bold mechanism clean is important for continued reliable function of the firearm, especially if a primer is punctured and gases leak back into the body of the bolt. Disassembly of the bolt may also be necessary for the purposes of adding or changing custom parts or for refinishing work.

Iraqvet, you won't believe this but you just saved the day. Monday I told a buddy that I had forgotten to put the safety on when disassembling my Belgian Mauser. He had just seen this video, and e mailed it to me. Thanks for the very timely video! And thanks Pat for the heads up.

When I was 7 years old I took the bolt on my dads Arisaka apart . He freaked. I had to show him how I did it. your vid reminded me of that. I had forgotten (I'm 61 now) all about doing that. Thankyou for reminding me of that childhood memory !

I wanted to thank you for doing what you do. I just got a santa fe field mauser (30-06) & wanted to clean it up good before my wife takes it away from me till Christmas. I wanted to take apart the bolt and clean up all the cosmoline & gunk hampering the movement of the bolt loosen up the super tight safety. Well sadly I skipped the step of putting the safety flag in the center position, thankfully watching this video I was able to recock the bolt by using the rim of the cartridge like you showed. Eric you saved me lots of time & embarrassment, I so appreciate what you do with your channel for all of us in the 2A community.

love working on guns, no formal training but I own a lot of guns so I always detail strip them just for fun, the hardest bolt I had to remove was finding out how to get the bolt out of a model 52 Winchester but when you figure it out it seemed so easy, then but it took a lot of research for old guns to find out, man do I love the internet

I'm very glad that you made this video! Last Saturday, I was taking apart the bolt of my Turkish Mauser as part of a restoration project. I accidentally turned the safety to "fire" and I couldn't re-assemble the bolt without recocking the cocking piece. Needless to say, it was hard to do and I ended up with a huge blood blister on my thumb, which I still have! Hopefully nobody else makes the same mistake that I did, lol. ;)

When I put my Mosin bolt back together, I use the largest notch on the little tool to adjust the bolt to the right length (It's the notch closest to the loop). Speaking of that tool, the loop is great for taking off the bayonet if you're having a hard time with it.

Great vid. It's especially helpful for the Mauser bolt, being more complex. My FFL guy said not to bother disassembling the bolt during cleaning, but you've shown that the small spring and pin can get pretty dirty. Also, setting that Mosin protrusion might be the most important thing you said in the video. Puncturing a primer could flat out ruin your day. Safety first. Thanks. Gotta love that Arisaka bolt. ...Actually I have all three rifles, and they're all great.

Fantastic video Eric. I own all of these besides the Arisaka 6.5. I'd love to have one but it just hasn't been high enough on my buying scale yet. Either way, I love these videos and the knowledge you spread. I'm beyond happy to have gained the insight on my K31 bolt. It is by far one of my favorite classic milsurps to shoot and I wasn't completely positive on the field strip of the bolt. But now I'm totally sure of the operation. Thanks again for all that you and yours do for our sport. :-)

and then there's the Beaumont that scares the piss out of you the first time you unscrew that mysterious screw in the bolt handle. (ping) two halves of handle drop apart, and you think you've broken the rifle. then you realize it's fine but you have to retrieve the firing pin spring from the next county over.
