Oh my shattered nerves you guys rock! I am from South-Africa, we don't have many poxy brands here. But, I am starting this as a hobby, hope it works out! Learning everything I can on your channel.
@fnordeon10133 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes, these guys do great work, and the comments are good and helpful. My reason for writing to you, is that you wrote that you don't have much epoxy brands in South Africa? If you would like a recommendation, google 'Black Forest Wood'. They have their own epoxy, and it is a good product. Jeff sells the epoxy they use in their web site as well (I just haven't used it, so I cant say anything about it. But considering the reviews, it is a high quality product).

Another beautiful work ❤ One thing I really like about you guys, is how you talk the steps through on your work. One example is how long you mix this specific epoxy. Beautiful colour setting, it gives the top a beautiful richness.

Anoher solid video gents, well done ! Might be overkill, but perhaps an LED light under the lightening bolt to show where the port is, would be hella cool, but then it could interfere with the charging capability.
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! I love that ides but you bring up a good point with the interference. I would love to find a more powerful wireless charger that doesn't have to be so close to the phone for it to work.
@brockdelgato70233 жыл бұрын
Just an idea, not sure how it would look. I know you said you wanted the subtle look for the lightning bolt. But what if you did exactly what you did and make it the same color but then outline it with black epoxy. Doesn’t stick out too much and still kind of subtle
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
I think that could look pretty cool!
@fjelstednord31597 ай бұрын
Looks great. My only concern is having to route out the charging pocket so there's only 1/16" of material left (if I heard you right) and that doesn't seem like a lot of wood and I'd worry about it cracking out or breaking too easily. There are wireless chargers that go through 0.50" - 1" thickness so I'd opt for using that brand instead.
@jeffmackdesigns7 ай бұрын
Those might be the better option moving forward!

Love this table! Beautiful
@giga-chicken3 жыл бұрын
I remember installing a wireless charger into my desk. I dismantled the charger so it would only have to penetrate the wood and not the plastic housing, and I held it into the pocket with homemade wood filler. The upside is that it all works perfectly well, and since I took it apart I got to reposition the indicator LED so I can see a sort of soft glow while it's working. The downside is that I cut the hole too deep: I measured it perfectly, but then I got greedy and went for a slightly deeper pass. I figured it since it was backed with wood filler it would be sturdy enough even if it was that thin. I was right, but also it was a mistake because the wood rippled as the filler dried. Footnote: If you do what I did don't expect it to work immediately. Since I poured a bunch of water-based wood filler all over a bare electric circuit it stopped functioning entirely for several days until the filler completely dried. All in all I'm glad I figured out what I'm doing on a crappy thrift store desk so I can do it better on a real desk later.

Do you all ever add c channel under for added support and stability against warping? And if you do, what is the rough size you start to do that with?
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
We don't add C channel to the underside of our tables. We don't find it necessary if the wood is kiln dried. That being said, it doesn't hurt to add them if you are concerned about it warping. Wider, all wood, one piece table tops are more likely to warp so those are the ones I would be more inclined to add C channel. Hope that helps.

You mentioned that you sand to 220 grit. I thought with rubio monocoat, you weren't supposed to go higher than 150 grit. Have you had any issues going to 220? Do you have any special steps you take when going from 150 to 220? I know rubio says if you want to go to 150 grit, then you should raise the grain with water after sanding with 120 grit. Thanks
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
Rubio Monocoat suggests only sanding to 150 grit because the product is designed for flooring. Sanding to 150 grit is perfectly acceptable for flooring as you don't need it as smooth and you want more protection. We haven't had any issues sanding to 220 grit. We also raise the grain between grits.

So your table is 1.75” thick and you route out 1 11/16” to leave 1/16” for the wireless charger how deep is the lightning bolt routed? I looked like it was at least a sixteenth deep.
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
That lightning bolt was only about 1/32" deep. We had to be very careful. I am hoping to use a more powerful charger next time so we can leave some more meat between the charger and the top of the table.

Do you seal the wood edges before pouring the epoxy? Also, do you do the C channels in the table? (I think that's what they are called lol)
@jeffmackdesigns3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameron, We don't recommend sealing the edges because you may end up creating a weak point between the poured epoxy and the edge of the wood. If you do decide to do a brush coat, I would recommend brushing the edges with epoxy a few hours before you pour so it doesn't cure before you pour. We don't use C channels since all of our wood is kiln dried and we haven't found it necessary.
