Fun fact: quicksand is not called quick because it's fast acting. Nope, it's actually quite slow; it's called quick because quick has a somewhat antiquated meaning for live. The famous western, "The Quick and the Dead" is a famous play on the word because it uses both meanings of the word. It's those who are quick with a gun being the ones to live and not be dead. It's also why the skin around a finger or toenail is called the quick. It's the live part of the nail. So quicksand is quick because it acts like it's alive.

My buddy and I fell into quicksand once while stepping out of our kayaks and onto a bank on the side of the Chattahoochee. You forgot to mention how to actually get out if it. There is an easy way that most don't do because they panic. Shift your weight to one leg, and begin to 'stir' the quicksand with the other. This will actually begin to separate the sand or dirt from the water, making movement easier in that area, releasing that leg. Knee that leg and let it lay on the surface. Repeat with other leg.

This brings back memories. I was caught in quicksand when me and my sister was playing in a nature reserve in southern Sweden as children, I was only 6 and she was 5. I fell in after we tried picking some pretty flowers growing in the middle of it. She panicked and started throwing sticks and grass at me and though I don't remember much, I do remember it giving me something to spread my weight across. Still have dreams about it to this day. I sat in the stream for awhile after I got out and I remember mom screaming and yelling at me when we got home and she saw me covered in mud and wet.

Figured I'd bring some attention to this. In some construction sites involving lots of earth moving, specifically involving very wet sloppy mud, it's common to spread the mud across an area to allow it to dry out. It's not impossible to get stuck if some random person just walked out into one of these mud fields. I'm assuming there are regulations to avoid making these pools deep enough to drown someone, but if someone got stuck on an off day when nobody is around, that could lead to some issues. So as a rule of thumb, stay out of construction sites.

I really thought everyone was prepared for quicksand because of the floating method. I learned about this as a brownie scout in girl scouts. But I also lived in a clay/silt ground area with lots of rain. We were at risk of occasionally running into quicksand

If you get into quicksand do not freaking STAND in it upright and don't wiggle around when standing. You are using your body weight and wiggling INTO the sand - It's the most deficient way to sink as fast as possible. It's a liquid so to not sink in it lay down, if you have an inflatable bed (as you should have if hiking when it's cold) - lay on that.

quicksand is mostly water, you can float on it, if you relax, and dont struggle.

This is actually really good advice all around. I’ve dealt with quicksand twice and the first time I was quite young and lost my shoes in the process. I thought that was probably a 1 in a million chance and didn’t consider it further until it happened a second time. The best advice I can give is to stir the water/sand around you. In doing this, you will sink deeper, but it’s much easier to pull yourself out of something that is mostly liquid rather than something that is mostly solid. Assuming you’re really deep, do one leg at a time and let everything settle to give yourself something to stand on. It’s true that being up to your knees is as easily escapable as being up to your neck, but what this video does not mention is that there is often standing water above. You might be knee deep in sand but up to your neck in water. Still, one limb at a time. Stir the mixture to release yourself and let it settle to give you something to stand on while you do the same with your other limb. It will feel like two steps forward and one step back, but you are still improving your situation. This could take hours, but don’t give up. Hope this helps someone at some point.

Funny you mention the walking on snow, or just standing in snow. You reminded me of why snow shoes....some even resembling tennis rackets you strap to your feet....are designed in that way. They expand the surface area of your foot and thus allows you to walk on the snow surface. It also reminds me of when I used to have chickens in Maine, and we cut a path clear to the coop....it was walking thru a rift in the snow. Mostly because in Northern Maine, we saw enough snow that by mid season we had feet of snow on the ground

I remember getting stuck in the mud while collecting gracilaria for a science study. Its scary because the more you struggle by trying to walk out of it, the further down you'll sink. I got out with the help of my instructor but wound up with like a million little cuts on my hands from the oysters that were embedded in the mud around me. Another girl who went out deeper got knee deep stuck, I got scared for a bit because the ocean's tide was coming in and she became waist deep in water as well. She got out tho.

Pro tips for getting out of quicksand: Let the sand have your shoes. When I got stuck, most of the suction was on my shoes, which were being inundated by the quicksand, and I got my feet out by slowly wiggling them around to get my shoes off. Then, I gathered every in ounce of strength I had to army crawl out of there, breaking the vaccum.

I know of a really deep patch of quicksand near where I live, and one of my favorite things to do is go and sink myself up to my armpits in it and just relax... for an hour or more. It's right next to a lake, too, so it's also really cool on a hot summer day. It's amazing.

I have done a lot of solo hiking. I always let others know where I was going, my route, and my time I expected to finish. Even if you don't have a friend handy for this role, you can always check in with the Park service or even the local sheriff. Though you need to remember to check out, letting them know when you finish, because launching a search and rescue for you when you are safe at home is really annoying, and expensive. They may want there money back.

I've been trapped in quicksand once when I was in scouts (I live in rainforest territory btw). Everyone was laughing at it but me and 1 other guy, who was trying to pull me out. I was only sunk up to my thigh because I remained calm, but I remember feeling like there was more to sink. By the 30 minutes mark when all manners of scavengers insect were starting to gather (they know it's a death trap, and they don't sink). Took an hour and a half to get me out. One of the most terrifying experience of my life. Lost my shoe too.

Do not move and if you see a strange bit of sand dont go into it. When you think there is quick sand grab a stick and poke it.
