I think the fundamental conceit of this video is solid, but it's worth noting (re: the exploration of Stefan's river donk) that 1.5bb of EV regret in a single hand is actually quite large--that's a 150bb/100 concession The point you make is worth emphasizing though; that solvers give us a glimpse into the fundamental principles of poker, and slavishly memorizing and reproducing equilibrium strategies is rarely as fruitful as having a rich variety of the right tools to make decisions in all spots

@@Tell_It_RightYou’re not getting the theory part of GTO. No matter what you do- the gto player stays near equilibrium and maximizes his utility. But you will still lose (or draw) overall as his strategy adjusts to yours. You’re more likely to trap yourself with unconventional play than gain a lasting advantage. I recommend you forget about applying game theory to poker & using solvers. Study some pure game theory as a topic to understand the basic fundamentals.

Have you ever tried? Sometimes if you remove or add just 1 or 2 combos from a betting range in a solver, villain's response changes from somewhat balanced to range shoving or range folding. That's how fragile the equilibrium is. That's why, to me, exploiting a GTO player by making unorthodox plays doesn't make any sense because you open yourself to massive counterexploits! Just play as good as you can and try to get an edge.

@@FCarraro1 The thing is FCarraro those counter exploits dont make you money. It'll make you EV sure but thats just an expected play according to the math And not the Player. So its really not measureing up How when you gain an edge by staying 1 step ahead of you're apponent you can maximize on those appourtunitys to Profit, even if its -EV you can still profit in that very specific Situation because of the dynamics in play you've set up with you're apponent leading you to Having the edge. So for example how would i Take down a polorized range? I would let my apponent profit from their bluffs. That sacrifice is the setup. I would then force an image of only stronger value hands which will lead my apponent to Oppening up their range to Bluff, But that'll fall into my main objective which is Bluff catch them 1/4 of their range and bluffing 1/4 over profiting from their deviation but before they could Polorize their range again ("i find this to be the main reaction they do") before that happens we can now fish for Monster hands like nut streight , nut flush , set over set ect And Gain a Range advantage flipping the table now staying ahead before their could adapt. And since most GTO players Overshove with Mediocre draws like weaker flushes and streights and shove TPTK, they are suseptible to getting traped simply for falling into the deception Image of a theory Range and A faulty EV+ formula. You never know what hands i'll play so Putting them in a vacuum and generalizing them will really hurt you're timing, you're intuition and frequencys if you're not intuned with you're apponent. This is called leveling and anticipation.

Not necessarily. Rote memorization is less useful in poker & a person's make-up may not assimilate to the soft skills which have an under appreciated over-arching impact on a players trajectory. That bring said I'm sure w/ enough years he could traverse to the top of the field as poker is far less competitive than chess.

If I deviate from GTO it’s a mistake, but if pro’s are making non-GTO plays they are exploiting GTO. C’mon man. There might have been some merit to this analogy with the chess example if you had shown 5 spots were the guy was donking river with different strength hands.

Actually it doesn’t matter that much how you play. The whole point of game theory is the GTO player will minimize his loss to you while maintaining an overall advantage to your playing style. He stays near equilibrium and maximizes his utility. In practice, he just folds more in the marginal spots where you bet like you have the nut advantage. But you will still lose (or draw) overall as his strategy adjusts to yours. You *won’t* crush him.

I like your content, but this video feels a little pointless to me. Magnus' idea makes sense because it's much, much easier to play optimal chess than to play optimal poker, and also because it makes sense to throw your opponent off guard to win single matches, but in poker you want to print ev in the long run and not try to win every single pot not matter what. Also, playing optimally it' simply impossible and even great players make constantly suboptimal plays, which generally lose very little EV if none, but the equilibrium is so fragile that if you gave the solver that game tree action locked it would drastically readjust in order to exploit. Long story short, no player plays GTO so I think you are much better off playing as close to GTO yourself to give yourself an edge rather than trying strange game trees that make little sense, or you should just exploit in the "traditional" way when you see leaks.
