How to Expose Sony Cine4 Correctly Using Zebras. Sony cameras like the a6300, a6500, a7sii, a7iii, etc. have the Zebras feature, so this should be fairly simple. This exposure guide should help pretty much with any picture profile, except for Slog.

Informative! Though I knew this it was nice someone put together a video of it. Just wanted to help shed some light on the CINE profiles. CINE1 and CINE4 are very similar. Both have 12 stops of dynamic range (SLOG2 has 14, so relatively close). The CINEs have a very aggressive highlight rolloff though, hence the under exposing by about a full stop (underexposed per metering per say, as it’s correct for the gamma). CINE4 is more shadows and midtones based, while CINE1 is midtones and highlights. In a brighter scenario, with relatively less contrast, CINE1 works wonders. CINE4 still works fine but nonetheless. CINE2 is similar to CINE1, CINE3 to CINE4, but it works within the “legal” color space, so it has less dynamic range (though appears flatter). What I mean by this is CINE1 and 4 clip at 109, whereas CINE2 and CINE3 clip at 100 (legal meaning 16-235, broadcast color space, 0-255, full range). One of the tricks to help with the aggressive highlight rolloff is to actually shallow out the knee in-camera (or turn it off). Turning it off may lose you a stop-Ish of dynamic range, but because it’s so aggressive, you will immediately see more detail in the highlights. The main benefit to this is that it opens up your exposure window, meaning that if you don’t totally nail the exposure, it’s more forgiving. If you’re pretty dead on with your exposure, and know to under expose, you may not totally see a benefit but nonetheless, experiment with it. To do this, go into your PP, go to knee, change point to 105%, slope to +5. This is basically turning the knee off. If you still want that knee to optimize dynamic range, but want to smooth it out, simply lower the point (so maybe 100%, +5). I’m still experimenting and haven’t found the ultimate sweet spot, but you get the point. Thanks for the content!

Thanks for the video! What do you do in a run-and-gun situation? Say you are doing a travel video where you may whip out your camera in various lights and locations. How would you (quickly) nail exposure without messing with zebras on peoples faces? ...especially if there isn't a person in your shot?
@MarcosRochaTV
@MarcosRochaTV 5 жыл бұрын
I would record myself for a couple of seconds and then do a playback to check the exposure until I get it right. Or better yet, I would use an external monitor.

There is a rule of thumb that your shutter speed should be twice the frame rate, and in this video it's shown that you are shooting at 24fps but you put your shutter speed at 1/100. Is there any particular reason for that?
@MarcosRochaTV
@MarcosRochaTV 5 жыл бұрын
Great that you noticed. Sometimes I break those rules because I don't mind if I don't get the proper "motion blur." I had my ISO set to 100 and I wanted my aperture to be where it was, my lights would not dim lower -- therefore I had to crank up my shutter speed a little bit. I should have used an ND filter to maintain the proper shutter speed to frame rate ratio.

@@MarcosRochaTV Thank you very much for your reply. I'm gonna try setting Zebras the way you did. I'll be shooting videos where I'm indoors talking directly do a camera, and when it comes to light I only have a video LED light with a softbox. Might also use a foam as a reflector. When it comes to shooting outdoors, I couldn't really get satisfactory results; everything looks just super-overexposed. Guess I need to invest in an ND filter.

I just shot a music video in Baton Rouge the other night. I had no idea what I was doing but tried to use CINE 4. I used to only do automatic. Which is obviously not the best option. Ever. I’m using a SONY A7IV. I noticed in the shots that a lot of them seemed dark and underexposed. I could see my subjects face but i just felt I may have shot it wrong. I had a light on the top of my camera that I bought from Best Buy but it sometimes creates too much noise if I don’t have my ISO set right. It looks alright but the shadows and highlights seem a little dark. My only question is…. Am I able to expose this in Final Cut Pro and bring out the shadows behind him without creating noise? I’m struggling to understand all of this for some reason.

hi Marcos, Great video! i have question about your shutter speed, when you shoot outside in daylight conditions, what is your shutter speed? 1/500 or more? How do you edit video with high shutter speed like that? Hope to read you soon !
@MarcosRochaTV
@MarcosRochaTV 6 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb is that if you are shooting 24fps, which I am for these videos, your shutter speed should be 1/50th. However, I bring up the shutter speed as high as I need to when I am outside. It is not ideal to crank up the shutter speed, but in run and gun situations like Weddings, I end up doing it. You can buy an ND Filter so you don't have to do that. I edit my videos the same way. The only thing a higher shutter speed affects is motion blur. You will not see motion blur as much with a higher shutter speed. In this video I shot it at 1/100th Shutter Speed.

Thanks for your answer, I have the same problem with my mavic pro. I use an ND16 and set 24fps but when I fly in sunny daylight I have to set my shutter speed to 1/400 or more some time. And the videos have a weird look Do you add motion blur in post production?

hi marcos...I'm having a problem with my sony a7sII with a canon zoom lens 24-105 mm with a photodiox adapter. when I change the focal length for example from 30 to 80 mm the image darkens dramatically and the aperture of the diaphragm becomes uncontrollable. I move the wheel and go from one end to the other of the scale of openings and I can not go step by step towards the correct exposure. The same thing happens to me by zooming out. I try it with automatic iso and with iso manual and the same. I also do not have any function of the camera in automatic. It limits me a lot in my work since I end up using fixed focal length lenses. you know what it can be ??

@KochBrofis
@KochBrofis 6 жыл бұрын
most of the time a little overexposed, because i dont know whats the best for cine 4. You can reduce a litte of the noise by lowering the shadows in post BUT not the blacks cause they only add more noise. I got a profil in my camera that works perfect at ISO 5000. But you cant grade it because it is not really flat. There is no nois but with cine 4... I mean where is the trick to get some nice and clean image out of maybe iso 3200? Not a big deal for the A7III.

I’m really annoyed with my Sony. Shooting Fujifilm for 7 years and you can shoot in any Film simulation (over 85 years worth of film stock experience from Fuji in their color science) you want and get clean beautiful colors out of camera. You need to do extra in post to squeeze what you can out of that 8 bit and in the end sometime it’s not any better than what Fuji gives you out of camera. I’m selling my Sony and adding another Fuji to the fleet. Its nice having that 4K 60fps and 10 bit.

You're shooting 1/100 shutter at 24fps. You can get away with that for a sitdown interview, but shoot any motion and it will look unnatural as fuck. I'm leaning toward you don't know what you're talking about
