This man, saved my life. I struggled for months with Slog2 in my A6300, doing heavy color grading and the result was always shitty. I moved to getting the result that I want straight from camera, starting with the profile PP5 and James settings. Oh my god, I dont have words. Just thank you.

For people who just need to refer to the actual data Profile & Picture Profile Adjustments Picture Profile: Use PP5 for customization. Black Level: Set to 0 to maintain natural shadows. Gamma: Cine4 for balanced dynamic range. Shadow & Contrast Controls Black Gamma: Range: Wide Level: +6 to enhance shadow contrast without crushing detail. Color & Saturation Settings Color Mode: S-Gamut3.Cine for flexibility in post-processing. Saturation: Increase to +4 for vibrant but controlled color depth. Color Phase: Set to +6 for warmer, natural skin tones. Detail Settings Detail: 0 (adjust between -5 and -7 as needed). Reduces in-camera sharpening for a natural look. Exposure & ISO ISO: Set minimum to 200 with Cine4 for bright conditions. Exposure Compensation: Overexpose by +0.5 to +0.7 stops to preserve detail in shadows and highlights.

So, James, it's been over a year since I started using a variation on this setting for myself, and I can quite confidently say it's one of the best picture profiles I've used. I usually use it on my a6500, as I have different settings for the A7Siii I use. The adjustments I made was reducing the Colour Phase to +2 (because I prefer a redder/orange tone to my skin tones) and reducing the black level to -1 because I feel it just gives a deeper black tone to my low light shoots.

Been shooting on the A7SII for awhile now and have been using a custom Still Gamma/Pro Color picture profile lately for all my shooting-typically in moderate low light conditions. After doing a new round of research and consideration, I’m thinking of setting up a 3 picture profile system: Josh Yeo’s extreme low light Still profile, a Cine4 profile based off of Matt Johnson’s for moderate lighting situations, and a slightly tweaked Slog2 profile for bright outdoor shooting. We’ll see how it works!

Yo, I know it's a few years since this video was made, but I happened to run into it this morning, and I have to say, this picture profile (with all your settings) in the a6400 is the best I've used. Crazy good. I generally use SLog2, but it's a pain in the as*, obviously, unless you expose perfectly, for the reasons you mention, meaning 8 bit just isn't flexible enough, and so I tried this today, and damn, this looked better than HLG3, or anything else I've tried, other than SLog 2 in extreme circumstances. Thanks so much for sharing this, it is much appreciated. I'm about to begin a big project, and I was feeling like I needed to get a new camera that was 10 bit to really get what we need, but I think I'll get in there with what I have, and maybe upgrade after the film is done. These settings are the bomb! Thanks again!!

Yes mate you're bang on Re: 8bit vs 10bit vs 12bit. The less bits sampling, the less you can pull or push before you get banding. Combine that with only using a super flat pic profile when you actually NEED it. ie. you have bright highlights next to dark shadows. Otherwise, if you're in a controlled environment (eg. shooting an interview) then you'll get less banding and better image on the picture profile you have to push least

THIS one of the MOST important TUTORIALs / EYE-OPENERs that I was looking for, since a while! THIS defines realistic people from wannabe-pros. You do not need to use something, unless you REALLY need it and know what you are doing. Most of the scenarios, even for musicvideos, short stuff, you do not need S-Logs etc. I do not need, nor want, to shoot S-Log, just because everyone does it. I want to EXTRACT what is the BEST from my camera and footage and not complicate myself needlessly. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! P.S. Of course, if you are on a PRO-RES level type of shooting (commercials, etc.) and KNOW / have the gear for what you are doing, then sure... S-Log makes sense.

For Sony 6K series Cine4 & S-Gamut3.Cine are the best combination actually. If you want less flat image, you can increase saturation al lot. This is good combination for preserving natural skin tones. But using proper colour card for adjusting image profile is essential.

@Bengtssn4 жыл бұрын
I agree to disagree! I do agree that 8 bit is a bit limiting, and that Cine4 or HLG3 is easy to grade straight out of camera. But you can actually get some really good colours out of Slog2, when you know how to work it. I shot 100% HLG3 for 1 year, and a couple of months ago I started grading a lot, and switched to Slog2. You can get some siiickness out of it even thought it’s 8bit, just expose for final image:).
