Hey there I love your video! Just a point though - the moths don’t do any eating (it’s the larvae that do that) so yes killing the moths is important- and catching them before they mate and the female lays her eggs is really important. But I think perhaps you should say in your video that killing the moths doesn’t solve the problem on its own - if eggs were laid then you still need to deal with them. I love the heat treatment plan which will deal with the issue. Doug

A regular clothes dryer reaches those temperatures. While I could see how it could damage fragile clothing, the info in this video means that many clothes could simply be saved by running them through the dryer.

Cedar essential oils, especially eastern red cedar (which is ironically juniper), are probably a better long term preventative solution than the moth trap, as they repel rather than attract moths.

Will say again in case one watches this and not the other presentation. Another prevention is when bringing in groceries, any grains brought in, for example flour, are frozen immediately or put into solid plastic containers with airtight lids. Often grains already contain the eggs just waiting to hatch. Hope this helps.

I used the pheromone traps and it only attracted a massive amount of outside moths to the windows. It was like the movie "The Birds" only these were creepy moths. It was quite terrifying. Never any moths in the traps though. I won't try that again. My moth problem is in two large wool area rugs. Currently using food grade diatomaceous earth and it's working. (You have to sprinkle it on and rub it into the rug) Leaving it on the rugs for 3-4 days. Vacuuming and reapplying Hopefully then take one to the cleaner. The other rug is destroyed but no big deal, it's just a thing. But the space heater idea is a great one. Thank you!

@@Oakleaf700 oh ugh! Sorry to hear of that. These are worse than fleas to get rid of. I read you can't ever get rid of them. Only try continuously to keep their numbers down. But that is near impossible when you can't find comprehensive information anywhere. My problem hasn't gone away. It's beyond severe. I've come to the conclusion that either: A. we aren't being told the whole truth about these moths. Species, life cycle, size of larvae, how and when the eggs are laid, etc. (I have discovered untruths and outright lies in this search. They can be found in the clothes you are wearing. Cedar chips, lavender, hot water washing does no good. In my situation they are in EVERYTHING. The larvae need vitamin B6 to survive longer than two weeks apparently. That is why they can survive on lint and dust as it has shed skin cells and hair. The storage bins won't protect your things. The larvae can chew through anything. They travel in search of food but i never saw that mentioned. I learned it by contacting a pest control company and had to nudge the answer out of them. The available info states the adult moth has no working mouth parts. I want to know then how are they getting out of some of these cocoons i am finding that i can't break with my fingers? Plastic, Wood, Metals. Kicking their way out? LOL) Or B. I have an additional infestation of a different, unknown similarly destructive insect. Very similar. I have a Carson Microbrite 60 - 120x magnifier. Unreal what I am finding. I've so far tried 3 magnifiers with the ability to record photos and videos but none can work with with my phone or my Chromebook. I've ordered another in the hopes of documenting to get answers. (Some university, dont recall right now which one, will sell you their study results for $30.00 which is ridiculous when they don't even preview the contents!) Best of luck!!

Most houses round here are 19th Century.... My son lives in a new build, and they don't have nearly such a bad moth problem. I have noticed horsehair is beloved by these pests, {on antique horse toys}so I make sure the manes and tails are sprayed with a 'safe' clothing insecticide...rugs can be treated too, but the insecticides for rugs make me cough, so I try not to use those now. Dark places, like carpet/rugs that go under heavy furniture are loved by these beasts... Mum invested in pure wool carpets in her 1840 cottage... big mistake! Moths have a field day. I have had a moth problem in various rooms and now they are concentrated in the wool carpet under my bed which is skirted and in my closet which also has wool carpet and my clothes. I see worms, crawling up the wall behind my bed and elsewhere, and they hang down from the ceiling. We are about to move and we will not be taking the carpet, but we will be taking our clothes and our curtains And I don't want to take them off with us also. How do I attack the moths under the bed besides vacuuming, which I've done and is there a product I can sprinkle on under the bed after I vacuum? This has been an ongoing problem, and it originally started upstairs when I was out of town and someone was watching my house, but never noticed that the rug upstairs was being eaten. Nothing is sacred with what I believe to be carpet beetles ... After catching one ( the size of a pea ) and in my eye's that's pretty large ... When I first found one of these insects I thought it was a Lady Bug but after closer examination was grossed out ... I live on the East Coast and this past summer never had such an issue ... Last ThanksGiving my landlord installed ( what I believe to be ) Berber carpeting ... The carpet itself is thin resembling " office type carpeting " so I'm not sure if the carpet was made to look like Berber ... I was so aggravated by these insects I was forced to have an exterminator for an estimate ... The beetle I caught I saved for the exterminator and he did identify it as such ... He told me I have to vacuum almost everything day as they breed quickly, he also told me these insects are coming from outside ( he was right on that ) as I can see them sometimes fly on the opposite side of my window, some times I'll see them on the inside of my window pane ... I don't have " moths " never ever saw one in all the yrs I'm living here but have to safely assume these so-called carpet beetles do the same damage ... Most of my tops I had to throw away and the one's that have not been damaged yet must be placed in huge blanket size Ziplock Storage bags ... I no longer have the luxury to hang my tops and have to break my back every time I need to find a top ... I have even went as far as to keep all my freshly laundered sheets in the storage size Ziplock bags and it's a hassle ... Breathing in the Raid I spray from time to time is making me ill, I can tell as feel my lymph nodes swell and hurt ( I live in a small space ) I fell defeated at this point ... It's November 2019, last night I had quickly pulled something out from my closets floor and found another carpet beetle I'M SO AGGRAVATED >:/

Great video with awesome products and advice! Can you recommend treatments or advice for dealing with variegated carpet beetles? Are there any carpet beetle lures that work? And they are tiny, how to keep them out of woolens? Many advise “ breathable boxes and bags” but don’t say WHICH boxes ( other than cotton) are breathable and therefor more cost effective. And, what to do with oversize items like quilts etc, the cotton bags available are too small for these kingsize items Thanks so much!

what you are describing as 'moth eggs' next to the holes in clothing sounds more like 'frass' - the excrement from the larvae! Nasty all the same. You might see frass in the bottom of a drawer where clothes moths have been active. I have had a problem with case bearing moths in some woollen rugs, and I have just put them outside in strong sunshine, which will kill any larvae. I'm in the UK and have a constant battle against these wretched moths. They seem to be becoming more widespread here, and are also a real problem in museums and historic houses.

I don't know about what Kirby's recommending what I can tell you that Is that web moth a.k.a. Cloths or carpet moths Seem to go where it is dark and undisturbed. And no, they obviously do not like the light. They also do not fly very well so if you see like a sporadic flying thing, that's probably one of them. They mainly will run and try it maybe like hop and jump if you do come across them and shine the light.. Vinegar I hear is a good killer for all phases of them.

Vacuuming is the best solution - you just have to keep doing it religiously for a while. My main moth issue has been carpet rather than clothes. Thoroughly Vacuuming will radically decrease the egg numbers as well as larvae. It’s a long game rather than an instant solution but over some months you will fix the issue if you keep it up.

Perhaps you have a carpet beetle infestation. We had one that destroyed some socks and sweaters. My wife went about hand inspecting wool items (found several carpet beetles among our clothing) and either tossing them or putting them in the in the freezer for a couple of days. We also set off a fogger. Have not had an issue since.

Gordon Bradley Is buy a moth trap to see if that is the issue. They can go completely undetected. The buggers are impossible to see. There are also some other possibilities that I’ll look into for you. At a minimum, I’d heat treat everything. Heat kills all insects, which is what is so great about it. If your closet is large, you can call a professional to being larger heaters that are normally used to treat hotel rooms. But the heat would kill any insects, not just moths. I’d then set traps to monitor. Install an air filter maybe. And make sure I’m keeping my closet door closed and the environment as clean as possible.
