Another option that you can do is go to composition settings > 3d renderer > and choose ray traced 3d or cinema 4d. Then there will be a geometry options setting and you can extrude. The only problem is that it only works with text layers and shape layers. I hope that in the future they will add images and videos to that option

Why should that be a problem? Just make a shape layer in shape of the image/video and put that image/video in front of that shape layer...

This was lagging my computer but I found an optimization, If you want to make the extrusion thicker while using less layers input the expression [value[0],value[1],index+99] into the scale settings, it'll make every new layer 1% larger Edit: I've played around and refined it into [(index+9999)*.01,(index+9999)*.01,(index+9999)*.01]

how would this help at all? the scale in Z-direction is 1. Multiply by thousands and its still 1. I tried anyways. And it didnt speed up render time at all (sadly, no miracle here...)

Great video (again!). Just in case anyone else runs into this, I ran into a problem whereby if I created more than 18 layers of my image comp, I got a black background appearing behind my image. To get rid of it, I went into the compostion settings/3D Renderer/Options and set the Quality to be 'Extreme'. a) looks amazing :D and b) sorts out that issue (which was causing a lot of head scratching!!)

Dude. As long as you're in Cinema 4D in 3D mode, I think you can just go to the drop down menu of the image and go under "Geometry" and change the numbers under "Extrude" . If you're making that many duplicates....no wonder you may experience some crashes, because those duplicates are making the project too big! Good luck!

hey i think i figured it out ! if you’re on mac make sure to click the stopwatch on “z position” WHILE holding down the “option” key on your keyboard, and type index with the text line that pops into the composition ! :D i rlly hope this helps !!

Hi! Great video! This works and is very easy to get the extrusion, but when my layers are set to cast shadows on a base layer and I employ this method, it tends to either mess with the opacity of the entire formerly transparent rectangle or else eliminates the shadows completely. I went into the material settings and tried having the bottom layer's shadow to ONLY while the other ones for off, and some other combinations of settings and didn't end up figuring it out. Any advice?

When I try and animate the rotation values of these layers it rotates but there is no extrusion. It just animates the flat image? *EDIT* Nevermind I appear to have missed the final step in order to see the extrusion. Thanks for the tutorial.
