This is a great video guys! I also just made a falling tutorial... one correction: NEVER LAND ON YOUR LOWER BACK! I know Brett said he uses it, but it hits the ground at the same time as hiw upper back, at best.. you should always aim to disperse the impact as much as you can with your limbs and upper back. Lower back is crucial to protect

No lol as a martial artist and former gymnast (I did parkour for years) I have a few stuntman friends... his technique is very dangerous.. Landing on your lower back will make you paralyzed, whipping your neck back like that will give you serious neck and pack problems. Instead roll your body diagonally so it looks like your head snapped back (you can see any zombie or bad guy in any movie do this) and help with part 2, as you fall, disperse the impact by rolling. Land on an upper hip area, or butt cheek and roll flat until your whole body is flat on the ground... kinda like unrolling a carpet, the whole time there is contact and no 'smack' anywhere. You don't want to shatter your scapula, break a hip, or spinal pleura. Lastly at the the last moment, smack the ground with your open palms.. real stunt men can hide it well... for obvious energy dispersion look at 'pro' wrestling you see when they fall or hit they always smack the mat... it takes even more energy away from the spine and head. Also when you fall awkwardly, HANDS UP! Protect the head and face, consequently this also hides the stunt man's face. (You've seen that too in every movie.. they always fall with their arms up in front of their face.) He has some good instincts (remain loose, and go with the fall, dont fight it.) And a few good techniques, his roll is pretty good! Not exactly tumbler level, but it looks good and he does it pretty safely. I'd say he has a lot to learn if he was ever going to try to teach anyone. Because simple stunts can go very wrong. Just falling on your back the wrong way, from 3ft and you can be paralyzed... it's no joke. Respect your bodies! Hope that helped clear up stuff for you. If you ever try that stuff, be safe and seek professional advice. Good luck.

If you want to be realistic... When people get shot, they tend to curl forward towards the fetal position to protect themselves as their body realizes the kaka just hit the fan. It's cinematic to fall backwards, but real people die falling forward, clutching their wounds as they wonder where their life made a wrong turn.

Actually I never thought that falling down is actual so hard :) slipped on ice several times and only get pain in arms because arms were not ready to move fast, but no injuries were occurred. But falling after slipping on ice is 100% instinct. When I think about intentional falling down for some stunt trick, I dont think that I want to do that. This video is great advice for indie filmmakers and directors: you cannot just say to an actor to fall down because it is written in a script =)

If you fall while running or while having lots of momentum, I strongly recommend rolling on your side like a pencil as this will increase the duration of impact which will make it less painful, this also works very well on rough surfaces because you will most likely get less scrapes or bruises. I've done a few falls for theatre and film on hard surfaces. The key really is to stay relaxed and just let your body react. Overanalyzing what you're going to do and trying to memorize exact ways to move your body just paralyzes you and leads to crappy falls. As long as you know how to avoid hitting your head or spraining/breaking your wrist, your body will naturally absorb the impact.
