When I raised chickens, I found that clipping one wing instead of both worked better, that way they can't get even lift and will do a stall-spin back to the ground. Of course there will always be the determined ones that will figure out how to flap furiously and climb the fence at the same time. Those are called stewing hens.

Here in Germany Kohlrabi is a very common vegetable and we use it in a wide variety of recipes. It’s delicious as cutlet or steak; warm with a creamy sauce; fiilled with ground beef or rice; as soup; in Lasagna; you can turn it into noodles; as curry; and the leafy greens can be turned into a pesto (with sunflower seeds) ... the ideas are endless and of course we like it raw too. Thank you for sharing your fermenting method, Jill ... that’s something that I haven’t tried yet.

Thank you Jill for this demonstration. I was afraid to do this but you convinced me I can do it. 😊 Sorry to hear the chickens raided your garden. Chickens are determined creatures and show no mercy. Clip both wings and if needed string flag banners (like in your glass greenhouse) about a foot above the top of their fence enclosure. The flags make the fence appear higher to the chickens and they think they can't fly over it. Also the string flags are pretty. 👍Take care.

We used PVC pipes and chicken wire to add height to our fence. It’s at a 45° angle and only adds about 6 inches over, but about 8 inches towards the chicken yard. Looks a little goofy, but they don’t attempt to jump it anymore.

We have to clip wings once a year. Every spring, once the snow melts, they start jumping the fence of their run to get to the grass. That's how we know it's time LOL Make sure you are only clipping 1 wing and not both.

I had to put chicken wire fencing around all my raised beds. The Strawberries were attacked by bunnies. In the past birds ate the strawberries. This year I put netting over the top. Keeps the birds out. Thinking I need to wrap the chicken wire with the netting because of the tiny junco birds.

Hi Jill just wondering if you can store the fermented vegetables in the pantry on a shelf, instead of the fridge? Any idea how long they can be stored?
@WhisperingWillowFarm6 ай бұрын
No, after fermentation, they need to be refrigerated or they will continue to ferment more and eventually spoil

So sorry for your loss of your kohlrabi and cabbage. I can alot of things in the garden and tried kohlrabi for the first time in the garden last year. Want to ferment it but I don't do fermentation. Do you take the weights off when the process is finished? Thanks for the helpful video.
@tericamcginnis58482 жыл бұрын
Here's another from me 😊. Can you give some feedback on the salty flavor. The longer it firments does it get more or less salty? When it goes in the fridge do you need to leave in the weight? And do you ever use any leaves or grape leaves for enhancing the crispiness? I tried to find the firment class from your email but only got your kits, supplies to buy.

I musta missed something. So you put pickling salt in the jar, then you mentioned adding salt to the water in the stove pot. How much salt goes into that pot of 6 cups of water?

I never have seen such large kohlrabies! My grandparents grew them. They only were about tangerine size. I guess if they are left they grow bigger? Or is it the type of kohlrabie? From the comments I have read it seems to me that Nathan has a project to complete. He will just need to decide which options might be most effective for you. I may have to try fermenting thought I worry about essentially leaving veg in salt water. I pickle a few veg and freeze some. I love pickled beets and mustard relish made with zucchini, plus standard pickles, both sweet and dill. I think I might try with carrots first.
