My personal theory is that the Others are gonna combine into a big icy Voltron mecha and punch down the Wall. I have no evidence for this theory.

I think it is possible for the long night to last many years in the books, because the Long Night is fundamentally going to be a time of stasis. Initially there will be some major massacres, and the survivors will flee, and find ways to hide from the Others, including magical means (turning people to fire wights, coldhands, etc). The Dirty Dozen might not all even be in one place, they could all each be guarding separate regions, and lead A Brotherhood without Banners for each region. With the increase in magic, it will be more common to communicate via dreams, glass candles, weirwood stumps, anything, so all the heroes can keep each other posted. Once they are in hiding, it will give them time to prepare, get stronger, and finally launch an attack that can succeed. Many years can pass in this manner, with significant events being told through the POVs. GRRM could even try to make up for the 5-year gap during the Long Night, since he feels that some of his protagonists are too young, several years of survival can turn our protagonists into some hardened, epic, legendary heroes.

I love this idea too much to wonder how that would affect the Jon and Meereen plots. I don't know, it might actually be really interesting for cliffhanger plots to get wrapped up, before the Long Night falls. Once the cliffhangers are resolved, the characters can spend the rest of the first half of the book getting ready/regrouping. Then the last few parts could be the Long Night falling. Maybe ADoS starts around the time the Long Night starts to slowly end

I live in the north west of the UK very close the coast and my dad (who has lived here his entire life) doesn’t believe in wind chill factor 😤😤 the lunatic. It can get cold enough that you tense your whole chest without even realising but my dad won’t put the heating on in his house, it’s like a bloody penguin sanctuary. Calvary charges are about breaking army formations and making their morale break so they panic as well as you can’t stop moving because then the momentum is burnt when you do. Neither of which, momentum and morale breaking, has any resonation with the dead.

I think a great weapon for the others would be jars of wild fire with shards of dragon glass dropped in and tied all on the outside of the pots or even pots made from the glass that way when they explode you get shrapnel along with the flames

Arya in a tree would have been awesome. There are so many little things they could have done to make it better. A call back to “fire cannot kill a dragon” when Daenerys yells Dracarys to Drogon and he blasts the Night King. Seeing her realise that he must be a Dragon, and fire can not kill a dragon. Would have been a nice call back. But I don’t think they were too worried about wrapping things up and making things make sense to fans.

When I first saw that scene, that is what I imagined happened. She had so much training in being still and quiet, like a ghost, a mouse, etc. Calm as still water. Patient. She practiced sword fighting on tree branches while in Harrenhall… Etc. Then we had that whole scene where Arya was SO quiet inside Winterfell that she bamboozled all of the wights and none of them found her (side note. Weird that they were so slow moving while the ones outside were moving at turbo speed…) Anyway, I was hoping that she used those skills that it took sooooo long to learn. Nevermind the whole face changing thing. But, then I watched the scene again and…. Nope. Unless the branches were SUPER long (not as pictured in the scene) and conveniently the Others couldn’t smell her…. Seeing the trampoline thing is so disappointing…. And, how did she NOT FREEZE when the show’s Night King was choking her? Wouldn’t every bone in her neck be broken and her skin be black and frozen? Bran was marked by a GENTLE TOUCH and it wasn’t even his physical body. Don’t get me started on the show…. It’s a deep dark pit and difficult for me to climb out of. Ha ha

I have a theory that isn't fully formed. Its based on leaf telling Brandon not to call Ned back to life and the nights queen. Now its not fully formed as I said but what if you call back someone to life whose body can't contain a soul anymore? What if they become a literal ghost of a kind, perhaps it could inhabit a dead body for a while but its natural form would be intangible energy or as you said in this stream, like a mist, a cold, dead, mist. This cold mist can then condense into a frozen form, like say the nights queen, whom later raises an army of white walkers through the same method she was raised and they raise an army of wights.. Details past this point get sketchy into extreme speculation territory. The core idea though, that the white walkers are the result of a dead person whose body is destroyed in some way being brought back to the living world, is what I wanted to offer as an idea so anything on top of that is just muddying the water.
@thurielangel3239
@thurielangel3239 2 жыл бұрын
This actually sounds genius. It would also give another possible theory for the creation of the others, Not out of hatred or as weapons but perhaps as someone trying to bring back the ghost of a person they loved ?
@ninjalokust
@ninjalokust 2 жыл бұрын
@@thurielangel3239 Okay, this is the speculation part of extreme lengths I mentioned so don't expect it to pan out. The nights queen is Nissa Nissa. She bore her breast and Azhor Azhai forged lightbringer in her heart, killing her and burning her body to a crisp. The guilt of killing his love drove him from the empire of the dawn in search of a way to bring her back which eventually lead to the wilds of the north of westeross where he met the children of the forest. He reached into the weirwood net and brought her back the way Bran almost brought Ned back. But she had no body to return to, and became the night queen. This is option 1). Option 2 is the same but instead of Azhor Azhai bringing her back, the 13th lord commander does it, after falling in love with her during a trip into the weirwood net. The story of him seeing her from atop the wall and following her into the north is just the sanitized version of events that hide the crime that was committed and the way such evil can be unleashed. My problem is that those who are brought back to life fall into two categories, those who are brought back quickly retain most of themselves (like Beric) but those who were dead for more than 3 days become like Lady Stoneheart, a wraith bent on revenge. If the nights queen was nissa nissa then it should track that whatever came back sought only revenge against those that wronged her, meaning if option 1 is correct, she would seek to kill Azhor Azhai for her murder, but what happens after her revenge is gained and all who wronged her are dead? Could she even return to the other place from where she was called or would she be permanently trapped in the mortal realm? Well there might be an answer that will turn up. I suspect they can be banished back there in some kind of exorcism but not killed in a classical sense. Anyway, as I say this is all speculation as I have major information deficiencies about the last hero and azhor azhai and whether they are the same person, related, or simply connected by the nights queen. More than that, if Azhor Azhai made lightbringer to end the long night then he has to be the 13th lord commander, and I know David lightbringer feels there was only one long night, but I feel there was 2. The first came at the end of the empire of the dawn, saw lightbringers creation to end it and that lead to the night queen being created. Then much later the 13th lord commander falls for the nights queen and they trigger a 2nd long night by their actions. Another option is these events are reversed, the 13th lord commander created the nights queen and together their actions caused the long night which Azhor Azhai then has to end via lightbringer. There are other options as well, but this is how I wrap my head around it so far and make sense of the confusing timelines, scattered and broken history and biased narratives.

I’m late too… but absolutely agree. I’m in the mountains of northern Utah and the air freezes and creates an illusion of thousands of tiny diamonds in the air all around you. Beards most definitely freeze, it hurts to breathe, etc. And this is in the states… I can’t imagine the cold of the Arctic. My mother grew up in Newfoundland and when she speaks of the cold she means COLD. Those Southrons will never understand… until they do…. 🥶

If the weirwoods are a hive mind then it makes sense that the spirits thrown out of the weirwood (Others) are still maintaining that hivemind feature. It's almost like both the Others and the Greenseers have their source of power in the weirwood. Both of them "see".

This is not really related to this stream, but something I wanted to share. I have been watching the new Wheel of Time series. I have never read the books and frankly I’m not that impressed with the show so far, but I want to give it a chance. This past week they added a number of short videos on the Amazon Prime site that are similar to the GOT History and Lore videos and I was intrigued to see a number of things that GRRM seemed to have pulled from. I realize that most fantasy genre stories share common ideas and themes, but I still found this intriguing. They talk about the ancient time before the Breaking of the World as the Age of Legends. In that ancient time there was a King Aemon who fought against the dark powers. He had an Unbreakable sword, which of course was broken. The person responsible for the Breaking of the World is referred to as the Dragon. They are now waiting for the Dragon Reborn, who will either save the world or break it again. There are a few other bits and I’m sure someone more familiar with the story could speak about this much more knowledgeably. I don’t think the general story shares that much with ASOIAF. But I thought these details were interesting and something that might have some relevance for exploring ASOIAF in relation to other epic fantasy sagas.

oh yeah, GRRM is a big fan of Robert Jordan. That's why there's a House Jordayne of the Tor (Tor Publishing being RJ's publisher). There are many parallels, and also instances of them drawing form the same mythologies. There are extensive correlations for sure
