Great video! Saved me the headache of figuring out via the manual

Great video, thanks! I just rebuilt my Honda GX160 from my aerator, and I was concerned with putting the right oil type and amount in the gear box. When I google it, I get about 100 different recommendations for gearbox oil, but none of them felt right to me. A 30 weight seemed right, but google was saying a 90 weight, a 80W weight, and many other types of gear oil. After all the time and money spent rebuilding this engine for my aerator, the last thing I want is to have to buy a new one because of the gear box. Thanks again!

Hi, thanks for a simple straightforward video. I am trying to find out what the oil hole on the other side of the engine ia for. I know this is a dumb question, but Im a woman and got this engine mounted onto a Troy-Bilt tiller. Im learning how to do regular maintenance on it, but have not been able to find out anything about the second oil hole. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
@craigspowerequipment89796 жыл бұрын
Good question... The second engine oil dipstick/filler hole is just that - a secondary one. This engine could be used in MANY applications on many different machines so Honda has an oil fill/check on either side of the engine just in case one side has the access restricted due to how it may mount onto a particular machine. You will notice that when the engine is level, both dipsticks will read the same. It doesn’t matter which one you use, but usually one will be easier to access depending on its application.

got an SourceOne PL400 aerator, now Billy Goat. The diagram specifies Honda GX160 engine and transmission. The engine RPM is 3600. Are you sure the aerator transmission is 6 to 1, or 600 RPM? Was looking for this clarification all over the place. Thank you.

Two oil fill caps, depending on the application of the engine, you may only have one open side on your machine to reach the oil.

Per Honda owner's manual for GX 120, 160, 200: The oil recommended for both the engine and the gear box are the same: outside temperature between 50-102 F, straight 30; for temperatures lower than 50F, then 5w-30 or 10w-30 www.honda-engines-eu.com/documents/10912/24646/1029/4bd89710-69ad-4e22-95ec-4f61f02fa00d

Great video. I have an engine with 6:1 gear reducer same as above. The gearbox leaks oil from the bottom. I opened the gearbox and it has no gasket. I really tightened the screws but still leaks. How should i stop the leak if my gearbox has not any gasket? I appreciate the help.
@hustleeveryday65823 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old question, but my recommendation would be to do the same as you would with an oil pan on a car or truck. Get yourself some black gasket maker from harbor freight, and lightly coat around the pan, circling the screw holes, and then place it on and let it set. I bet that will solve all your Honda gx160 issues my friend! :)

What is the horse of a gx160? Also I have two oil fill ports, one has a white cap and the other has a grey one, the white one has the dip stick and the other does not?
@thomasfisher14314 жыл бұрын
The engine is typically referred to as a 5.5 hp. The two dipsticks are interchangeable in the event the machine the engine is mounted to requires a unique configuration.

I bought a used Classen Aerator from Home Depot. While I know I need to change the oil for the engine, is it also advisable to change the oil in gearbox? If so, what is the best way to drain the gearbox? I don't see any drain bolt for the gearbox. This is a Honda GX 120. Thanks!
@GeneL564 жыл бұрын
Located the GX120 owners manual. For gearbox with 6:1 ratio (the one shown in video), oil in gearbox is drained by removing oil check dipstick and tipping aerator toward the oil check dipstick hole. Recommended for used equipment to change gearbox oil every 6 months or every 100 hours, whichever comes first. www.honda-engines-eu.com/documents/10912/24646/1029/4bd89710-69ad-4e22-95ec-4f61f02fa00d

my gx120 is leaking oil from the crankshaft cover can you give me any advise how to fix it or if a need a new motor

get a new gasket. Most carb kits you purchase will come with a new spark plug, carb, and crankshaft cover gasket.

So if the grey dipstick is for engine oil, what is the black dipstick on the other side for?
@craigspowerequipment89796 жыл бұрын
Often times Honda will place two dipsticks on the engine on opposite sides to accommodate various applications. If the two dipsticks that you see are at identical heights from the base just different sides of the engine then they are going to pour into the same “reservoir” whichever port you pour the oil into.
@sonko20106 жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense. If one dipstick is blocked by a wheel, for example, just use the other side. Thanks for the reply.

Would this setup be good for a gokart??
@hustleeveryday65823 жыл бұрын
The engine itself would work well on a gokart, but it wouldn't be the best with the gear reducer. The gear reducer will reduce the speed by 1:6 while creating a lot more torque. Unless you were building a rock crawler that you didnt want to go much faster than maybe 8 miles an hour, you would want to make sure that you use an engine without a gear reducer. I would recommend a 212 from harbor freight. You can pick them up for under $100, and they are the identical engine without the gear reducer.

How do I remove the gearbox and is the engine shaft the same as other honda engines with no gear box. Thanks
@craigspowerequipment89796 жыл бұрын
The video shows 4 bolts being removed on the outside of the gear box housing, and then 4 more inside the gear box housing. This will allow you to completely remove he gear box from the engine. Note, the GX120 with gear box has a special crankshaft coming out of the engine itself. You cannot take just the gear box off and install it on just an “ordinary” GX120.
@claresmith72275 жыл бұрын
Gear reduction drive is easily removable as mentioned. The gear box is a spline fit on shaft that is a full teeth engine crankshaft, there is no clutch keyway. Looks and works just like a slide-in driveshaft a simple spline that plugs in trans, but its a gear box that bolts on engine. Crankshafts, either keyed for clutch or spline-Gear-drive, both are interchangeable, but the splines need to have engine block cover for bolting.

Are those gear box noisey
@craigspowerequipment89796 жыл бұрын
The gearbox isn't going to make the engine any louder when compared to the sound of the engine/exhaust on an engine without the gear box. You may hear a bit of a whining noise, but it once again isn't loud enough to be of any more concern in noise sensitive environments than the engine/exhaust itself.
@thomasfisher14318 жыл бұрын
It is best in my opinion to purchase the engine with a gearbox already on it. For about $400-500 you can purchase a new engine set up with the gear reduction already on it. Trying to add a gearbox to an engine that didn't come with it originally can be expensive because you not only have to buy the gear box you must also buy a new crankshaft to replace the original one inside your engine. If you do purchase a new engine equipped with a gearbox already on it, ensure that the gearbox is rotated in the right direction for your application. This video can assit you with that m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5KYoXlvbL6Cjbs. Best of luck!

Just did this on my GX120, strangely the old oil smelled like gear oil not regular engine oil. Any thoughts?
@hustleeveryday65823 жыл бұрын
I noticed the exact same thing, the consistency also seemed thicker, almost honey like consistency. I was considering using more of a gear oil, but I have heard so many people say to just use a small engine 30 weight. What did you end up doing?
@notavailable99193 жыл бұрын
@@hustleeveryday6582 Everything "official" I could find said to use the same oil as the engine. I did read of some people using gear oil but could never find any confirmation to do so or what weight. Ended up going full synthetic 10w30 same as the engine. So far seems to work fine, though it would be nice to know if/why it came with something else.
