Gregg and his customer Marc are making their way south in Marc's new RVHauler named DRIFT, and you can see how to fill up your motorhome RVHauler at the truck stop. Marc shows how to pre-approve for the fill, add fuel additives and some of the safety and security issues to be aware of. For more information on the RVHauler named DRIFT, see our website at rvhaulers.ca/wp_car_dealer/com...

One additional thing to add, if you don't "pre-trip" your RV Hauler at the start of each day, while you are fueling is to also check your oils and fluids underneath your hood as well. This way, if you need to add fluids, you can pick them up when you go back in to pay, and add them once you've moved out of the way.

Following up on your comment about getting "fresh" fuel at a truck stop: I asked a Flying J manager (who happened to be fueling his diesel Jetta) how much fuel they go through, and he said "80,000 gallons a day. In the middle of the afternoon, we're selling it faster than it's showing up. 13 tank trailers per day."

OK one very important item I saw, when you got out you locked the door with the key. That is a very smart habit to get into. When I was a commercial truck driver I have seen lots and lots of drivers hop out of their rig and push the lock button, and upon return they found themselves locked out. So if you lock the door with your key you will have it with you and can get back into your rig. I have always liked Flying J's always clean and the staff is very helpful.

+Marchal Peck If it is your RV have a new key made and using "bailing wire" or a solid wire, hang it in your engine compartment behind the air cleaner, or AC or somewhere you can get to without getting greasy and a thief won't be looking in case of that "Click" when you shut that door sound!

The good thing is the fuel still costs the same per gallon whether you buy 10 gallons or 100 gallons. We get the benefit of filling up less often.

That for sure is a helpful video, I had a rental truck and I stopped into a Loves to fuel up and the tank was on the passenger side and I could not figure out how the slave pump worked. A long haul guy gave me a hand, you had to start the master pump, put hose on the ground and go around and start the slave pump.

On foot at the truck stop- If you can't see the other driver, he can't see you. So- at the gas pumps, walk straight forward far enough to be in the line of sight of the other drivers, then cross over. Never cross over tight behind the trailer- you won't react fast enough if the rig backs up.

When filling your hauler make sure your fill the aux side first before you hang up the main side or it will shut the pump off.

Sheila and I want to thank Marc for making his truck available for examination during the Tampa RV Super Show and Gregg for making all of this information and technology available. I have a question about registration. At conversion time you title a HDT as a motorhome in Alberta? At reassignment in the USA it depends on the state, of course SD will only title it as a private truck despite having MH printed all over it. I am curious to find what the combined towing limit is for a private DL and title, more research needed. We really enjoyed meeting you at the show on Industry Day Gregg!

Having operated diesels for 50+ years and have driven in all lower 48 states DO NOT use an additive every fillup, your just wasting a lot of money plus ALWAYS tell the cashier your fueling an RV as commercial fuel is taxed higher in EVERY state.

It would have been good if you had explained the pump face messages so RV drivers don't use Reefer fuel, can set up DEF etc. The security tips also are good for what ever type of vehicle you fuel up, there are videos on KZbin showing thieves stealing from cars while the owner is distracted fueling. I did drive a truck with twin tanks and it had twin transfer pipe between the tanks 1 near the bottom the half way, the pipes were about 3" inside dia. So fueling from one side would three quarter fill the other side tank. So you would drive away with one and 3 quarters tanks of fuel. of course you could pull the pipe way around and top up the other tank but I never bothered.

Way late to the party, so sorry for the necro-post! I was curious as to why you lifted the fuel nozzles (both in and out) upside-down? Ie: so the nozzle was pointing upwards when horizontal, rather than the conventional downwards. Wouldn't this simply force the remaining drops in the nozzle to spread all over the equipment and general area?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Dave, thanks for taking the time to post your question. Good eye! We have a design on our beds to maximize the surface area and space to carry our "toys". The access to the fuel filler neck is best reached by turning the nozzle up-side down. We have found that we get no drips or mess using the nozzle this way. Thanks for watching our videos.

Are the 2 tanks connected? I saw you put the diesel treatment in only 1 side (or didn't show the other side). Also how would you keep the fuel level equal from side to side i.e. you started the main pump before the satellite pump wouldn't the drivers side end up with more fuel in it than the passenger side?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 9 жыл бұрын
smokiethebear912 Good eye! Thanks for taking the time to ask your question. Yes, we did put additive in both sides, but some guy (who shall remain nameless) edited out the second addition for artistic reasons. Or, maybe he just messed up. Also, the tanks are usually interconnected with a cross-over line. However, the line is really really slow. It usually takes HOURS for the fuel to move across to any amount. So, there is very little difference in the two fuel levels.

I guess it would be acceptable to pull into the commercial side with a truck and a fifth wheel Rv? I have a 40' fifth wheel that i just purchased and i have not yet taken a trip longer than one tank of fuel. Im getting ready to take just such a trip and i will need to fill up several times round trip. Most of the fuel stations even trucks stops have tight parking areas around the public fuel pumps, making a stop with a long RV tough.
@rvhaulers

I often see pickups towing trailers pulling into the commercial fuel lines. Yes, you are right - the other lanes are pretty squishy and tough to negotiates with a large trailer such as yours.

As a truck driver and a person that has used the commercial pumps. If there is a lot of rigs at the truck stop waiting to fill up. Take the further away pump. It's one thing I always do, it's a ton easier to maneuver your 40ft 5th wheel with a pickup than it is a 53ft trailer. There's no rules about doing this. But it's just a polite gesture to the truckers.

Is that an Alberta plate under the transit tag? And doesn't it belong on the front? Not the back? Alberta issues only one plate. On commercial highway tractors it goes on the front. On passenger vehicles the back.
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Cameron Hello Gary. You are absolutely correct - Alberta passenger plates are on the back. We re-title all our RVHaulers as motorhomes. The title says passenger use, motorhome all over it. Good catch!

How much of this diesel treatment do you use? Is it a halfe a bottle per 20 gallons, or something. I am from the netherlands so i am not used the amount you call gallons. It would have been nice if you told how much it is, or i missed that. Thank you for sharing it.

what is your range on that without a motorhome hitched up? I'm guessing at over 120 gallons you can go at least 1,000 miles on a loaded tank?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 8 жыл бұрын
+roundingcorners All these RVHaulers tend to have fuel tanks (two of them) that are between 125 gallons to 150 gallons each. The total amount of fuel on-board is approaching 300 gallons. That is perhaps 3000 miles of driving!

I noticed the "In Transit" temporary sheet (8:50) over your permanent tag. Is this the method you "tag" the hauler until it is tagged/registered by the owner?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 9 жыл бұрын
***** You are exactly correct. The "In-Transit" label is an official temporary tag we get from the DMV here before the RVHauler leaves for delivery. I am always challenged with how do you keep a piece of paper attached to a moving vehicle for 20+ hours? I use layers of packing tape to attach it over a regular license plate for the trip, and hope the rain and wind doesn't make it air-borne.
@Rob_Moilanen
@Rob_Moilanen 8 жыл бұрын
+Gregg RVHaulers You could also face plate it with a thin piece of lexan over the license plate (using the license plate bolts), it'd keep it somewhat weather safe and also make it somewhat theft resistant.

Okay, perhaps a good tip is when you get to a pump, shut up and pump your fuel. Truck stops are often fairly busy places, so don't delay others by just sitting in your truck yacking.

@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers 8 жыл бұрын
+blain gatterdam Thanks for your comment and question Blain. Why We Can’t Extend a Filler Neck Splash-Back - We are almost always filling these RVHaulers at commercial pumps which pump really fast compared to the retail pumps. The filler nozzles have those automatic shut-off systems that stop the flow when it senses the fuel is splashing back against the end of the nozzle (ie you are full of fuel). If we have a filler neck, the tank will get completely full, and then the fuel will quickly come back up the neck, and not shut off in time to avoid a mess. Over-Filling - These tanks are often 100-150 gallons in capacity. That volume of fuel will expand and contract due to temperature changes. We can’t fill these tanks beyond 95% capacity by law. Accident Safety - There are also rules about how the tanks are constructed for accident safety. If the tank were to come loose, it has to be able to roll over, and not snap off the neck. There are quite a few rules we have to follow, and the particular government rules can be found here www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.67
