Some great old school tricks and tips here but some are only any use when you have a few helping hands to hold stuff. Taking a stand sounds like a no brainer but you'll either need a heavy C-Stand of sand bags. Or the wind will remind you why. If you're working alone remember who will be carrying all this extra stuff. That's right. YOU. If you work alone primarily there are some things you can do. You can take a look at the sky on a cloudy day before you start shooting and make a choice. Am I shooting for cloud or clear sky? Meaning do you think it will be mostly cloudy today or mostly clear. The just make sure you only shoot on one or the other but never both. When the sun goes behind cloud or when it isn't. One or the other. You'll at least have consistency then without the extra equipment. the other tip is to reframe whenever possible if the sky in the background is becoming an issue. Try not to allow the sky to fill more than say 10% of the frame. that way if it blows out completely it's no biggie. You'll find if you expose for the subject then it will still work because the difference in luminance between the subject and the earth and buildings etc are pretty similar and within the tolerance of you camera's dynamic range. It's the sky's luminance that throws you under the bus. The other thing that will catch you out is "mid-day". Do not film at mid day in the middle of the summer if you can help it. shoot much earlier or much later if you can and save yourself the hassle.

Those were some great tips - thanks Sam! I was filming interviews outside yesterday and the sun was going from ultra bright to behind thick clouds so I found it almost impossible to expose the shot. I'm relatively new to film work so still learning, I don't use any auto settings and shoot in CLOG so auto ISO isn't even available on my camera in LOG. Have you got any tips for exposing a continuous interview when the sunlight is changing so dramatically throughout the scene?
@SamHolland3 жыл бұрын
Hey Anthony. So pleased this helped you. What camera are you using? You should still be able to control your iso. To be honest, we kind of have to do the best with what we have. Dynamic range is a big one. Try and get the exposure as best as you can do it’s not blown out at its brightest point and use diffusion where possible. If you have a high dynamic range camera, you should still be able to bring back the detail in the shadows. The Sony FX6 has an auto ISO feature which looks amazing. Super handy for this sort of thing. But if not, just try and follow this video best you can 🙏🏻 You could use a light meter
@antg222883 жыл бұрын
@@SamHolland thanks for the reply Sam! :-) I’m shooting with an EOS R. It only lets you do auto ISO when not filming in LOG which is annoying. I’ve always wondered if auto ISO would actually expose very well though. I’m still learning a lot to be honest! I’ll definitely get some diffusers/reflectors for next time! 👍🏼

Hey man, I got a question... 2:58 how would you expose for the background (sky) when i don't have a reflector/anyone else with me to hold it? So, like, totally "run & gun style" and some scenes I want to show my subject with the sky in the background and have the entire scene properly exposed? I do use ND filters, but always seems to either blow out the sky or blow out my subject. Hope that makes sense? Maybe you've already answered this and I might just have to watch this video again, but thought I'd ask 🙏🏼
@SamHolland3 жыл бұрын
Hi. It could come down to the dynamic range ability of your camera. If you’re camera has a high dynamic range, you’ll be able to have both the highlights and the shadows exposed well. Have you got a log profile on your camera? Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🎥🤩
@scorpisces1823 жыл бұрын
@@SamHolland hey, thanks for getting back! I totally forgot about the camera itself haha! I've only got the Canon M50, but I have installed C-Log on it. I watched your video a couple times, you explained it really well. I'd say my issue is probably a combination of the camera and "user error" haha. I'll def reference this video next time I take my camera out
@SamHolland3 жыл бұрын
That’s cool. The m50 is a great little camera but yeh, you won’t get the best dynamic range from that camera, even with c log unfortunately HOWEVER.
