The minor screwup method you mentioned is exactly what we do in the professional voiceover studio. If I make a mistake I stop, go silent for a few seconds, then restart that sentence. It gives the editor a visual reference of where the mistake happens and also gives the editor a nice clean starting point.

Very relatable, thanks! I'm now at a point of filming 1 video in about one hour, but it used to be much longer. Since I film videos in English and English is not my first language, I actually find a bullet point script to be less efficient than a written out script. When it's just bullet points, I take much longer to get to the point and I make more mistakes in English. So having a written script works better for me.

Love these tips. Just a note: you can speed up workflow on your clips by not starting and stopping the actual recording. You can just leave a big pause gap. They're easy to find in the editing process. This saves a lot of hassle hitting the record button over and over again and getting re-situated.

Thanks for sharing, from a time savings standpoint, I understood that doing ONE take, even though some parts will be taken out is more efficient. My process is as follows: 1. Writing script 2. Shooting in one take (30min for a 8min final video..) [Guys.. I have A LOT of bloopers!] 3. Trimming: go through the whole 30min to cut bad scenes out 4. Real editing with animations and transitions

TimeFlies - Time Management mines pretty much the same thing except mines a little bit faster. Just based on the fact I’ve been teaching swim lessons for over 7 years so I pretty much know what I’m going to say anyways lol. I still have so many bloopers and many times where I’m just starting at the camera thinking about what to say

Bullet points are key!!! When I work with clients, they can riff with billet points but asking them to do a script takes FOREVER! Even with a teleprompter!

HERE is a video summary of what I just learned from banessa's video! 1. Do not over script! Just use bullet points instead 2. Film your self line by line and do not be so hard on yourself when you mess up! You can just delete the clip instead of reatarting your entore video. 3. This video really helps Vanessa. I struggle with verbal fluency and word recall and 1st mistake I overscripted 2nd mistake I was filming in big chucks and the amount of times I had to re-record bc I messed up. I was recording for 6 whole hours yesterday. Awesome tips Vanessa! I remember my first couple videos took me like 12 hours to film, edit and finish, now I can do it in WAY less time haha! I also spent a lot of time fully doing a script, and now I save tons of time by simply following an outline I create and I speak a lot more free-flow now. I found I was feeling robotic early on too! Scripting can also take extra several hours. If the topic is technical or demands a common thread of what you say, then scripting everything may still be favourable. I realise that I need to upgrade some stuff. Cheers!

I'm so glad I discovered entire manuscripts and filming chunks were hindering both to my recording process and my sanity. I tend to operate I'm an intro-body-outro clip style with the 'body' being split up if I find I talk a lot on one point and my recording time is almost up (PowerShot SX730HS goes for 30 mins/recording). Sometimes I'll leave a slip-up in or make a blooper for the end since a common phrase on my channel is "English is hard guys."

When you film everything in one take and mess up, you don't need to start all over again. You just resay the part you screwed up and continue. The mess up can be edited out in post. It's actually quite simple.

Some great tips there as usual Vanessa. I would just say that I find it much quicker to film in one go. If I make a mistake I just start that bit again and edit it in post production. When I used to film in lots of clips it took forever to organise them in my editing suite, at least with one long clip its in order.

Great review, Vanessa. I do agree, I use PPT Mirror tool trick to convert slides into teleprompter software, then I deal with bullet point structure to avoid over-scripting, which is a definitive guide that keep me maintaining eye contact with the viewer and I don't read word, therefore my speech remains natural.

This is so helpful. I've done the no script which hasn't been great. More recently, I do a whole transcript which is soooo LOONNG and I spend hoooourrrss filming because I have to do it exactly as I wrote it and I just get in my head and it's exhausting! As someone who can't resist winging it, the tip for a structure for the script (as opposed to a full script) is great. I find myself talking at the camera veering off all over the place, planning it out before turning the camera on is probably super obvious to most people but I'm sure will help me. Great video. On the point you make regarding having a remote, I use an Elgato HD60 S to stream the 1080p footage from my Sony A6000 into my PC via USB. I bring this footage into Open Broadcast Software (OBS) and then use an Elgato Stream Deck to control OBS such as starting/stopping recording, switching scenes so I can go from talking to the camera to having a presentation behind me, etc. It's super useful. No SD cards neither as the footage hits my Network Attached Storage (NAS) straight away over a gigabit ethernet connection. And I can control my lighting from the Stream Deck too, so I basically sit down, bring up a script (I use ClickUp), turn on my lights, hit record, do the thing, stop, turn off lights, upload footage :-)

Most current cameras can be controlled via an app using Wi-Fi, so there might not even be a need for a remote! I have used DSLR Controller on Android or just the official apps on both Android and iOS, for both Canon and Panasonic cameras :) Great video!

Sabrina & Alex it does take forever. It’s all about how good you want it. If you don’t care so much about the quality and care more for quantity then you can still edit them pretty well in under an hour and a half.
