Cannot be more on point! I’m in the process of hiring someone. What I could add to this is: 1/ create a check list to be added to your video brief so that your editor have more instructions on your requirements and to reduce revisions 2/ manage risk! what if your editor cannot edit your videos editors anymore? you need to keep consistency on your editing in the event it happens and have a back up. 3/ grab templates from your editor (such as reusable end screens or intro) - this helps you manage risk in 2/ 4/ ask your editor to show tou their work + ask to test them on a first video at a reduced rate (if possible) 5/ learn how to let it go !!! it’s hard for me to let it go as I’m used to edit and do exactly what I want on my videos.. 6/ I’m stressing Vanessa’s point on monitoring the back and forth. You can expect a lot at the beginning, but it will be reduced and under control over time Thank you so much Vanessa!!!

I'm a freelance video editor and I agree with a lot of what you've said here! Another great place to find a video editor is to put an ad on Craigslist. A lot of video editors who are starting out check Craigslist a lot and most of them are going to charge you less than other editors because they are earlier on in their editing career. The video brief is such an important thing! One of the things I hate most is people giving me a bunch of footage with no explanation, then being upset that I didn't edit it how they wanted. If you have even the slightest idea of what your final video should look like, you need to tell your editor before they get started. It's so important! Hourly vs per project is always a good debate. I generally like to edit per project just because me and the client can both see how much I should be charging them and not wonder if I inflated my hours or if I decided to take a paid lunch or something. I think it keeps both the editor and the client more honest. Trying out an editor on one or two videos is a really good idea. Really really good! I almost always offer it to new clients because I want them to be sure they like me before we commit. And I think if you're hiring someone, you should only commit to one video and see how it goes before you commit to anything longer.

Then, I noticed that it wasn't cost effective because I was paying the same every month but wasn't getting consistent amount of videos. So, I switched to a per video rate. This way my editor is actually motivated to finish my clients' videos and also lessen my cost. Great video Vanessa!

This is really good advice. As a working professional of 20+ years, the post production market has changed radically. Pay for video editors has such a huge range. The talent range is also enormous. There is one truism that has been and will be for all time. You get what you pay for. A really good editor will be very expensive per minute of finished show. A new one fresh out of film school will be relatively cheap. Great video editors are flexible, consistent, inventive, trend following and will add loads of value to your videos up to and including stuff you hadn't imagined yourself. You can "tell" when you come across a great one. Always, always, always trial your prospective editors with something. Most will be happy to cut a cold open or something like 2 or 3 minutes of content as a demo of their capabilities and for you to get a flavor for their style. From experience, it strokes a sense of pride when you can demo out a couple minutes and blow away a prospective client. It's rewarding to do. Give them examples of other videos as a point of reference. Can they tell an engaging story and elucidate emotion within that time? Do they follow the script you gave them? Great start. Depends on what kind of videos you're producing. Have a contract ready to go that is open ended. You want to write (or adapt) the contract, not take one an editor hands you. Negotiate it out. It's part of the process and coming to a mutually beneficial agreement should be a breeze. Any editor worth their salt will not work without one. A decent "break-in" period would be something like 3 months, however many videos that shakes out to be. Don't commit to a time period in the contract if you don't have to. At-will is the best option if your state allows it. That way both parties don't feel trapped. Additionally, no good editor will sign a non-compete generally so toss that idea out. NDAs, however, are a good thing. You, the producer, are the copyright holder after all. Lastly, always pay your editors on time. We actually do like to buy food and pay the rent on time. They can and will jump ship on you if you give them any sense of insecurity. Video editing is intrinsically a very insecure job and anything that adds to that stress is a huge red flag. Remember, they're always hunting for better work.

A couple of additions about hourly vs per video price. **fixed-price pros**: - clear control over the budget, easy to plan expenses, no way that freelancer would spend more money uncontrollable **fixed-price cons**: - eventually, a worker will be trying to save time on every possible occasion - in case of extra requirements, it would bring extra negotiations or freelancer will eventually leave if you constantly push him/her to do more for the same money P.S. I also Elena and a Video editor myself :D I'm building up my portfolio currently and looking for channels with at least 1k subscribers. Could do a couple of videos free of charge as well.
