I'm oldschool learned from father may he rest in peace. Great video, I'll add 1 thing he forgotten to mention. A bad worn out gas cap The sound will change in a bad or faulty gas cap the sound will come together far as the clicking and will not be solid. A new (vacuum) gas cap will have a more (solid) (louder) clicking sound and the clicking sound will not be coming together. Note put a paper towel in the gas filler, Next using rubbing alcohol clean the filler neck where the seal will contact the neck. Next use a very light coat of vaseline on the seal of gas cap to condition and protect. Reason for this step is dirt debris and road grime will get under the gas door making it's way under the gas cap. Resulting in #1 bad seal torn or cracked. #2 Not locking correctly, Note that's where the sound in clicking changes. Thank you and bless you all.

Lots of check engine lights are due to a bad gas cap. After installing it may take several days for the light to go off. Always start with the simple stuff and cheapest first. Good luck.

You can turn the light off by disconnecting the neutral post on your battery for 1/2 hr.

Seems to me the fella had an inkling that it was like the gas cap to begin with. But I suppose there ain't no money in that. me if I get a small evap leak code I'm going to change the gas cash right away clear the code driving about eighty miles and see if the light comes back on. If not I'm going to take an educated guess and say it was just a bad gas cap.

Wondering because I had a Hyundai I forgot to close the vent valve and smoked it and had smoke coming out the cap, I assume the cap is bad because I doubt closeting the vent valve will change the results

I have been dealing with my gas cap for years now.I think I fixed it.Its an aftermarket cap and I thing the seat is too narrow for the rubber O ring to sit and seal properly.I filled the gap between the seat and the rachet ring with 5 minute model airplane epoxy and let the epoxy self level while drying.The O ring now sits and seals properly,I'm now left with trying to clear the stored codes on the computer

Why not just replace the gas cap first, instead of investing in the smoke machine? The code (in my case) says replace the cap. Between me and the previous owner, we've replaced the gas cap three times. Yet the problem remains. What do you do when replacing the cap doesn't fix it?

What causes the gas caps to go bad? The rubber seal or something more complicated? Could you just add a new rubber gasket ring around the cap ? Thanks

Just age on the seal. I just end up changing the gas cap. Oring is not serviceable

The rubber seal is worn out. You should replace your cap every four years or so before failure. It's only an investment of $15-20 for a new one.

Nope it wouldn’t. I would prefer taking it to a well known shop which has good reviews. Sometimes it’s better to get a proper diagnosis. I’ve saved my customers a lot of money by doing the right diag

Can a person intoduce pressure into the tank and use soapy water to find the leak. How much pressure does the smoke machine put into the evap system?

It puts out very low pressure. The only time I actually put shop air. I completely dropped the tank, after I verified the leak was at the tank and I capped all the lines to the tank and added air. If you try adding shop air to a complete system most likely damage the sensors

One occasion I left my gas tank cap Open I didn't close right and after I had the engine light on the code was that evape leak I left that for a couple of weeks untill I replaced it with a new gas cap that the old didn't seal it right but I noticed that I still get poor gas mileage every time I fill the tank what should I do will something be clogged in my gas tank that's why I get low gas milea distance I suppose to get 390 Miles distance but everytime I get 280 when I filled it up

My 2004 Pontiac gran prix to seperate occasions check gas cap 10 yrs.ago. I replace the gas cap. Problem solved. Now again I replaced gas cap . It didnt go away. The check engine lite comes on from time to time.

@@OzMechanics my mechanic is going to use the smoke machine. I'm going g to have both 02 sencors replaced the same time. Everything is fine no skins no hesitation. Great acceleration 265 factor hp. So I'm not overtly concerned unless the part is no longer available. As we know GM no longer make Pontiac. What bad business discition that was.

You are not obtaining the correct mixture of O2 with the gasoline. The cause is probably a bad Mass Air Control Sensor. The part is not that expensive and you can change it yourself = pretty simple, easy to reach.

Nice way to show how a gas cap is bad and possible sign of an EVAP leak, but are you supposed to use the same color gas cap e-85? You replaced a black from a vehicle that uses e-85 gas.
