How to find and translate dynamic strings from themes and plugins with WPML

This is so dumb. Why cant I just import the pot file and select the translation domain or just crawl the strings from the theme files like wp-cli does? Instead I have to go through these pseudo-nice hoops to get the strings into wpml...
