I think building inspector spotted cavity tray is on the lintel when it should be 1 course above for meter boxes so raised a defect and the site manager was under pressure to get a final so got the bricky to do a bodge remedial to get sign off and then couldn’t be bothered to fix it properly as that would mean taking bricks out to raise the cavity tray up a course

According to some comments here, probably brickies, they think they are pointless, so rather than put time and effort to install them as specified, they'd rather fake them and probably have a high chance of getting away with it.

Brick layers are not the smartest bunch, especially when you have a team of newbies contracted for these multi home builds, its literally just cut and paste the whole way down the road so they get lazy. A good site manager would check up on them to see if they are actually installing these but most are just as lazy as the brick layers and don't care. Its a dying trade to be honest, the good ones are retiring or moving onto better builds. "cheap" new build are riddled with problems because business just don't care, its all about the bottom line for them. a couple mistakes is nothing for them when a property is 500k and selling like hot cakes.

Well the house is no longer built to standard and therefore they need to be rectified before the home owner moves on (remember this is a new build pre new owner moving in)

It is an easy fix actually. Drill out the perp and install the vent. You can have the problem with the cavity tray behind the vent being clogged with excess mortar making the vent itself useless. The only way to fix this is to remove some bricks to clear the cavity tray and then replace the bricks.

Any moisure that builds up in the cavity falls into the cavity tray that sits at various levels throughout the wall. The weep vent allows the moisure to escape / weep and prevents damp from occuring due to moisture build up in the cavity

As far as "looks" it's roughly the same but as per the video they shouldn't move, you cant pull it out unless you apply a LOT of force

The back end of the vent should be the height of the brick and slopes down to the narrow spout end, "fake" is when the large end has been cut off in order to retrofit and appear to be installed correctly but are possibly not even open at the back, other styles of vents do exist but this is clearly one of those type.

For this style of vent they are an "L" shape, with the vertical part of the L being the height of a brick, and the horizontal part being a little longer than the thickness of a brick. This means that all the mortar on the joint will be in front of a correctly installed vent making it impossible to just pull out like this.

Its because they didnt put dpc across brickwork cavity so there is no point of having weep vent. Dont really get why they cant put a full one in but its easyer for them this way when its a bullshit job anyway with no tray in brickwork.

There’s a good chance the weep vents above a meter box don’t do anything anyway. Depends if the dpc plastic has been tuned up at either end. The water will run down the cavity to the real weep vents on the cavity tray. Most likely some inspector asked for them just to tick a box, knowing they’re not needed anyway.

I've been a builder for 30 years, them weep vents do nothing if you put a dpc tray behind it all it does is stop cold bridging. If it's full fill it does nothing.

@@maffigabri not all meter boxes have weep vents. Older houses don’t and there’s nothing wrong with them. It’s likely the DPC above the meter box has been laid without the ends turned up. So the water would fall down to the cavity tray at slab level and out the real weep vents. There’s a good chance these vents were not installed at day one because they weren’t needed. Then a different inspector requested them to tick a box on an app. There… pin that.

There is no need to get over excited over fake weep vents. if the cavity tray is not pierced, folded correctly and reasonably clean there is no chance of water ingress as it will still do it's job. The water will leach out of the masonry naturally.

They allow any water inside the cavity to drain out to stop any buildup of mould or other water damage, often times they are faked when bricklayers don’t allow enough space in the perps and cut them down so they can squeeze them in to look like they are done properly.
