Great topic. I’m convinced that if most USTA league players took 6-12 months off matches and worked on their technique and footwork with a coach, they could easily get bumped up a level. Instead most are stuck at their level for years or the rest of their lives. Even if they take an occasional lesson everything goes away as soon as they play their next match. I would love a video on dividing up practice time. i.e warmup, footwork, fitness, stretching, drills, serves, practice sets, rest days etc.

I am restarting after 40 years of absence from tennis and find very valuable explanations and training methods on your site. Good job.

Very important video nick, easy to fall into the trap of overindulging in one or the other. Reminds me of a 4.0 guy I know that's an extreme example of this he's serious about tennis but spams matchplay 24/7 and travels for USTA tourneys down south, never seen him actually do deliberate practice, has a lotta issues with the fundementals and pankakes the serve I'm sure theres many like him, I used to fall into that trap important video to make, see a lot of people complaining about their progress but all i see is them spamming matchplay and tourneys but doing nothing else I should talk to him lol

Exactly what we need. Thanks coach Nikola❤. For me the toughest thing is the versatility of opponents I face and their game styles (the trajectory of their balls, spin rates, etc). Mix everything, spend as many hours as possible on courts, and hope for the best😅

Good to face different opponents

Love keeping notes in my diary especially when the ideas are fresh in the heat of the battle. I take them during change overs as well and right after the match. We can always go back and re-read to check on opponents, strategy to beat them, weaknesses we see etc. Regarding practice matches that I want logged, I use free utr and challenge my friends, post the score and it counts towards my utr rating making it an unofficial "official" match especially when there are no tournaments happening near me.

Curse of living in a cool climate: Playing outside of the summer is expensive, so it's just 2-4 hours per week, and usually only matches. Because who wants to pay a lot of money just to practice. My technique always suffers a lot during the winter.

I disagree - I play indoors over the winter in Canada and primarily do rally sessions with other players or clinics, rarely playing matches.

Can validate this approach. My coach had me write notes immediately after my match play. Assess what the issues were and bring them back to our training. We’d work on them and continue the cycle. As an example was great being able to tell my coach “I errored a TON of deep high defensive backhands” and then given a framework for how to handle them.

Hi Nick, thank your advices!!! I'm wondering what did you do on the day before the match? Practice, Just serving, or play with someone sets? Thank you in advance!
Most rec players don’t play tournaments, may be playing USTA, more likely a flex league, UTR or USTA. Therefore all matches are the test of tournament play. I try to play tournaments 2-3 in a good year lately but still get stuck in the mentality of “it means something “ during practice matches. It should be a good opportunity to separate the mentality and develop more relaxed play but the competitive side takes hold and can spiral downward if not going well. Even in a practice match you should try to win, right, so it’s hard to see a difference. I agree with the thesis but struggle with applying this concept.

Hi coach I have a question I would like to take a few lessons and a consultation .so do you ever travel to Europe , Serbia or Croatia for example this year ?

Key points to remember: 1- Take note of weaknesses during match. 2- Practice those weaknesses 3- test result in practice match Rince repeat !

How about playing with a ball machine? When do you recommend it and how often?
What would you recommend for people who play USTA leagues and similar leagues? Unlike tournaments, which happen once a month or so, leaving room for practice and practice matches in between, USTA leagues have matches that count for something once a week, usually every Sunday. This makes it a difficult to work on anything new or to train hard during the week because you know a certain level is needed from you on the weekend.

League matches same thing as tournaments in my book
