Perfect post for this time of year! I’ve changed gyms a few times and it was always soon after the Xmas break. Staying interested in boxing is hard, no matter how old or good you are. Variety is the spice of life and the essence of boxing. Boxing is just a set of competition rules. How you ‘play’ by those rules is up to you. Every gym has given me a different perspective.

My first trainer was a good guy he would always try and give you words and make you confident and uplift his fighters before fights those are what I call good coaches cause mental games matter

I’ve got a bit of a weird issue. So I have two options, one is to pay for a pad holder to be my private coach, with sessions that only last 30 minutes, overpriced as heck too. the other is to go to a club, which does 90% heavy bag work,10% skipping, and the few who can spar just get into haymaker matches.the coach doesn’t even teach us, we are basically self taught. I don’t really know what to do in this situation, I wonder if I should just go for another sport at this point :/

This is a great video Johnny and totally agree with you. I spent many years training under a boxing coach that worked in an MMA gym. He was technical which I loved but it made me realise years after that the style he was teaching me didn't fit my body shape (short arms, legs and longer torso) he kept telling me to fight on the outside. I feel like I lost a few interclub challenges and many sparring matches trying to fight a style that didn't suit me and I didn't know what was going on! Another thing that gets me are coaches that only want money from private sessions to get the attention required and also count the clock. These days I train at boxing gyms around my area and have also had the opportunity to train with champs from Japan and Thailand which has opened my eyes to find out what is suitable for me.

Hahah, yeah it takes time to find somebody good for you. I think more so than body type is someone with the same fighting style and rhythm as you. You’ll feel like everything they teach you works on first try. No need to spend so many hours practicing and “visualizing”.

@@expertboxing damn bro, you're a wealth of knowledge. It's so true about the rhythm and style matching which is something thing I noticed too. When people start learning boxing they start out as a clean state without knowing what style is suitable for them so it also takes them time to learn this before being able to find the perfect coach. I also found that each country has it's own foundation style as well. Yep I did find a coach like that and everything just felt right with full trust... Too bad it was in another country. Time to move I think haha :)

@@hungyhunter What do you mean charge for private lessons for attention lol... Do you want free lessons when there are 500 other members in the club???

expertboxing - yes, I reckon every boxer needs to adopt a style that suits their physical (eg short or tall) and mental (eg aggressive or defensive) makeup. It would be great to find a trainer who is the same as you but that will never happen.
@hungyhunter4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelP-ke1tm Well the gyms here don't teach any technique. They only run classes for fitness which is common. If you want to learn boxing you'll need to pay $80 an hour. Try doing that 3-5 times a week. For the average person is this really affordable? It's all about money. A lot of trainers don't give a shit. They will count down the time and just make you do random shit that you can do on your own.

This is such a timely video. I tried out a new gym today and I'm going to try out an amateur gym in the next few days. Nothing prompted this aside from mine being closed over the Christmas period. I'm a recreational boxer thinking about amateur boxing. My current gym supports amateurs and I've been there for 6 months. The head coach at today's new gym is a former IBO champion and he started teaching me why some of my punches were wrong so the new gym is definitely good in that I learnt something straightaway but it's an hour away, is twice as expensive and is meant to be a traditional gym but it has no double end bag, speedbag etc. Maybe my best bet is the traditional ABC gym I'm yet to try as cost and distance is in between the two gyms. Decisions decisions...

My training doesn’t really teach defense technical boxing and I am the type of fighter that likes to box and not slug it out but my trainer is not really a boxer and doesn’t teach me about pure boxing and defense should I get a new trainer
@expertboxing2 жыл бұрын
it’s almost like your question answers itself. but regardless you should try other trainers and see what you like better. the more choices, the more options.

Does being flat footed effect my boxing as well, asbeing short?.....what would your advice be?
@expertboxing4 жыл бұрын
I recommend the same as for most people. Learn all the fundamentals and then after that, you can start strategizing for your body type.

In my 60s so all the trainers are younger, they all wanna do too many long combinations, it is doing my head in. As for me I wanna hit openings not just throw combinations out there, I want valid targets to hit. I already do plenty of practice on moving target and focus punching without a pad man as for example hanging balls and practicing with them. Another beef with the pads, it seems like they (trainers) are getting more out of it than I am, with the parrying and palming my punches, as I when fighting am not trying to hit their gloves, everything but! With the unnecessary noise and shouting from trainers to spur me on seems totally immature. I learn more from you and others on KZbin tutorials, than I can in the boxing gym, this is for sure but the having live resisting sparring partners is something they have, where on the videos this is obviously not possible. So the problem seems to me that, I like the sparring but not the trainers, as they don't emphasis any footwork, just straight forward punching combinations seems good enough for them, without strategies or boxing tactics. So what you recommend with all these things? Any ideas?
@expertboxing4 жыл бұрын
If you don’t like how they train, maybe you can check out other gyms. It’s always like that. Takes time to find people who work the way you like. It’s very common for serious fighters to frequent multiple gyms. Some for technical work, some for conditioning, some for sparring.

Thanks for your quick reply and helpful advice. I belive some trainers can instil bad habits, so would rather have none for now and see what develops from there. There are plenty of options open to stay busy with, am looking in to 52 blocks practice for additional defence ideas. Keep up the great boxing videos, will learn from them all! Cheers!!!
